Hmmmm, me thinks we're getting closer to the end of this rock and this hard place. Might this be it itself? It feels like it, given we have a big set of recaps, and some baked in time skips... Then again, there's at least one meeting coming up, that might be a big rock and a hard place...

After all, if there was a third member, you might need to ask one of the two surviving ones if they know anything, and boy... Nick might be telling some truths and some mammals may not be happy. Except me, it'll make me very happy.

Thinking about it, this chapter closes a lot of things, but really opens up a ton of future potential. Before I scroll on, let me just muse on the power of reader knowledge. I thought it was kind of obvious that the trade happenned after the fire, and Nick silently clocked it. But it seems he didn't, though his gut certainly kept trying to pull him to it, and for all the better. Hehehe, excited foxxo! You could tell he was in his element breaking that bombshell to Bogo (and Judy had her moments going on).

Anyway, going back to the big new revelations at play... Conor's secret motive for being the loan shark. So, he had dodgy money he wanted to get rid of. Initially I was thinking that it was just 50k out of that 200k that was sequential notes, though on looking back it seems that it could have been the full amount. Or some split level between... Regardless, I was thinking a lot about how Conor could potentially use some of them in everyday life or cash in paw payments. I mean, I'm guessing they're all (checks highest US note denominations) $100 bills. So he's stuck with between 500 or 2000 of them... And however much money was in the other store (and that he earned himself). I mean, if he has a biweekly shop or something, he could probably get away with using one of those bills there, asking for change. Slowly whittle them away with simple cash in paw purchases, though they would be very slow, and would take a very long time... Especially if you're talking about the higher figure.

In any case, he'd want lots open for potential big purchases later on, so splitting, loaning, and diluting was the way to go. Working it down to an acceptable level that he could live with (tragically that level wasn't a little higher). Hmmm, presuming he made the occasional buy from Gazelle (e.g. a bunch of spare t shirts)... There's a way to offload a few. With Judy potentially back on the case, she might be asking around there (as well as about the accident). Gazelle hasn't really featured, yet. Hmmm, lots of possibilities.

And as for Nick. Hooo boy! Going back to meet Danny again? Though it'll be a first timer for us. If that happens, tons to unpack, to learn, on both sides. I can imagine our fox guilting a silent Danny about it, then mentioning 'this silver fox now stuck as a fugitive because of your old friend'. Hooo boy, that'll throw Danny sidewise, though I'm guessing he'll ask more and more to confirm... Before learning who came in to represent him...

And then demanding to speak to Vern Rodenberg... confidentially.

But who knows! Again, you may be planning for Bogo to suggest offering Danny a deal to tag along and help Nick out (something certain mammals certainly won't like!)... We know very little about his situation, and how long he's in for. Ten more months inside, or ten more years. We don't even know his charge.

But yeah, lots of things up in the air. I mean, what even has Tufty been working on all this time? And how long before the ZPD begins to wonder if there never was a middle mammal in the first place.

A solid chapter that spent most of it time looking back, but certainly has me eagerly looking towards the future. Great job!

And hmmm,

My immediate thoughts upon finishing this chapter were, was that shake Bogo gave Judy and Nick the equivalent of a mob godfather's kiss of death and is he going to whack them? Crazy I know, but that's what went through my mind. Great chapter!

"A certain Vampire bat"

Is that a reference to When Instinct Falls, by Upplet?

So, lots of delicous intrigue coming out.

Hehe, and I'm curious of the context behind 'pulling a rabbit out a hat' and just why that's not the best thing to say. Also, Boorish XD.

So, we learn lots about what the red pig is trying to do, and it seems he's almost caught in a similar situation to old Jim McCrodon. As Nick said before, trying to get out is when you're most vulnerable. Joe Porcino though is trying to do his best, and Judy Hopps has a chance...

A slim chance...

Of making it work out.

But how long until Jack decides the hammer must fall once more. It can't be that long.

And then we get good old Verny back, always a joy. I loved the further exploration of his character, his hopes, motivations, etc. And he certainly has sniffed out the conspiracy and what's going on... And recruited his first mammal to the cause.

But they need proof, after all... Hmmmmm, carrot pen time XD.

As for trying to get in contact with Conor again, that's the big kahuna. Open with what he suspects and his assurances, and Conor may well spill it all out for the first time in his life. And who knows? If Nick is travelling east, might he also be asked by Vern the burn to look into a certain facility the Conor may have alluded to.

-But actually getting to this meeting?

Hmmmmm, Erin can probably still contact Conor on dischord, can't she? If she can, and Judy finds out, then a favour and a planting of a contact number and note may well be what it takes to get them talking once more.

Then again, best laid plans and all that. How long until Jack finds out that the one who got away is right under his nose... And the big audition is still coming up soon.

Thanks once again for this great chapter. Fantastic work!

Judy Needs Nick So Badly... Damn You La Peigne.

No matter who makes the next move, things are going to get ugly. Things are going to get ugly for Conor too, with the rabbit who doesn't know when to quit getting back on his case. Great chapter!

Hehehe. Far in the future, the villain is defeated, the dynamic duo are back together, and they walk into... -Precinct 7. "Trust me Fluff, it's an upgrade. The boss... is nice."

A fun chapter filled with different shades of interesting. Great bits of worldbuilding to start off with, with your version of the nocturnal district both borrowing from other fics and spinning it out into its own unique thing. Hmmmm, for it to have a name like Foxfire, a fox would have to be involved somewhere, would it not. Though maybe Nick finds out that the entire board is made of flying foxes. "... Okay, still kind of peeved, but I can paw you this one."

Also fun shout out to Impawsable meats, and a fun bit of background for Mikey too. He must be a very new start at ZAPA then.

I liked everything about the design and staff of Precinct 7, criminals in this nocturnal district have it a fair bit harder than in other versions...

Though the great truism remains, there can only be ONE crimelord of the nocturnal district. Fun to see him referenced here.

As for the interrogation, I've often found them something that lacks in other fics. One character asking, the one under pressure just giving up the info, not much drama going on between the two sides.

However, even though the Rafaj brothers were obliged to tell all here, you were able to make this into a super fun drama filled game of wits. Nick went fishing, and boy did he get his catches. Both tons of callbacks to the prequel (always fun to see) and the current state of the company, and then he drops the bombshell about Tad to them.

Haha...

I bet they really wish they just gave the Red Pig the mortgage money direct now.

A whole great range of reactions going on throughout, Nick mocking, joking, pressuring, even building sympathy... And boy did he get those birds to sing.

And now what, hmmmm... With those two new arms dealers, will Nick be going to investigate a whole new bunch of baddies... Will he instead volunteer to go over to Zoo York, to try and see if he can get any more info out of an old acquaintance of his. And who knows, depending on his sentence might that old acquaintance be given a classic assist the cops for a pardon deal? Or will he get curious and manage to look through an old archive of surveillance vids, spotting a suspicous silver fox near the time of the drop.

Who knows...

But speaking about silver foxes... It's been great seeing Judy and Nick flex their chops, but it's been a while since we saw a certain young OC. We're gonna have to check in with him sooner or later.

Well, regardless of where you lead us, I know it's gonna be brilliantly written as always. Great chapter, fantastic work, stay pawsome!

So that's where Conor got the money! Great chapter!

Plots within plots. Wheels within wheels. A lot going on here, but more is going on in the background. Machiavelli would be proud.

Sweet cheese n crackers and what the heck indeed! Tons of sneaky things going on in the background here, and a massive bundle of intrigue to unpack. The more answers we get, the more questions it raises.

And while Judy was the glue that held this chapter together, seeing the red pig in full rage and the shadow in full sneak was great fun.

Oh, Vern too. Goes without saying.

A solid chapter. Great job.

Great Chapter :3

Being a cop was all Judy wanted growing up. Being a pawn was not one of the considerations.
After enjoying the fruits of knowing Mr Big, she found there is always a catch and was forced into a bad situation by the Don himself.
Now The Red Pig has done the same and demanded a meet on very short notice.
The message from both: My way or it don't happen and then the war is your fault.
(They don't pay me enough, but, I'll do it)

Judy may not be able to see/contact Nick, but she can still help him. Recommending him for an interrogation may go a long way to keep that connection intact and help his career as well.
Even though suggesting Nick for the job seemingly came from nowhere, even Judy must realize she is far from being able to forget the one mammal who stood by her like no other has. Her past wandering thoughts are proof of just how important 'that fox' really is to her.

If the ceasefire does occur, will the combined scrutiny of two mobs be able to uncover the real culprits behind the fires? And, if they do discover the truth, Can they set aside there animosity to take on the Company together or will they demand their own brand of justice separately?

And what of the plan to induce a mob war, what is the endgame for setting one mob against the other?
Altruism is out of the question, there must be a gain of some significance to weaken or eliminate them. Perhaps a desire to establish their own criminal underground? They have already proven their willingness to act outside of legal constraints.
