for The Worthy Heir

Have you ever watched the show Once Upon A Time? This reads very much like its script. I love the narrative whimsy and how the prose always seems to be setting a scene that’s equal parts ominous and innocent.

One of the greatest appeals of dark magic is how easily unassuming it is, and I adore that Noah was an embodiment of that by the end.

All of your foreshadowing was beautifully layered, from Noah never really needing the book or notes, to Raphael being omnipresent but unfazed by the noose around his neck. Noah only needs to see how something works once to use it to his advantage. His mind is fresh and sharp. Conversely, Raphael has seen everything over decades or centuries of captivity. He’s numb. Seasoned and desensitized, just biding his time. Replace and outlast me. Do what I couldn’t. End him.

I really like the recurring theme that what Noa needs to win is right in front of him. The sick understanding that he missed the most obvious piece of the puzzle and has taken its place. Purpose fulfilled and quickly vanishing, he becomes a part of the forest. A new heart, empty of its own desire, now merely the object of something else’s.

But even empty hearts beat. Sometimes, they beat the loudest.
