for Maiden in the Golden House

Shun is confusing me. Be gracious that Alice "hired" you and let you stay and eat at her residence in return for minimum wage. In fact, I don't see Alice's income or how she pay Chris or Soon either. Now Alice is confusing me. From compulsive shopping to complete disregard to her health...

I'm pretty sure Shadow doesn't get paid anything, especially if Alice doesn't want to hang out with him. If the roles were reversed (although I doubt Alice would actually have the heart to scam anyone), I can probably see Shadow showering gifts everywhere, doesn't have to be liquid money. What if there's no inheritance to begin with? Shadow's intel sucks then XD

Now I kind of think Shun is a hypocrite for thinking his thoughts after listening to Alice and Chris's coversation. Just take whatever she offers and find a way to get rid of Shadow later on.

There's something about Alice that's just very weird. She doesn't seem to know how to do anything? Then again, most people of her age still have both parents, and also grandparents if lucky. Maybe she missed out on years of education. Shun's right: why won't Alice admit that Shadow makes her feel uncomfortable? Don't be like other girls that rely on marriage as an excuse to not care about the outside world!

This is where I can confidently say that Shun is "street smart" after he nearly exposed how he knew about Alice's huge inheritance. Stereotyping everyone might be his best defense!
No offense, but people are still interested in Alice even though she has no local family left? Wouldn't they need to ask the family for Alice's hand in marriage? Obviously Clara and Ben aren't here, although they probably accepted Shadow and moved on...which I don't like.
Shadow keeps getting on my nerves the more I see him. Shun clearly has a conscience and is dropping subtle hints to Alice to NOT move on with Shadow. Alice looks so confused. Why is Shun eavesdropping on Alice's conversations again? XD

Thanks for continuing to ruin my outlook on Shadow. Seriously, did Ben and Clara present Shadow with numerous difficult challenges, in which he surprisingly passed them all?! Or did they all meet at a public event before Alice's grandfather died? I bet Shun's just as curious as I am to know how Shadow popped up in Alice's life.

Soon sounds like she would make an excellent headmistress at an etiquette school...where Chris is most likely to be sent to if she were from a well-off family! I just love how you have Soon and Chris by Alice's side again. She needs the love and support.

Even though Alice was ignoring Shun for most of the day, at least he doesn't hold a grudge. Even though he's working with Shadow, he shouldn't have to put his health at risk to help Alice or gain her trust! LET HIM EAT DINNER! Don't you just love it when the nice-looking guy catches the falling maiden in distress?

Alice is possibly going out for a charity ball? I can't even figure out what kind of errands she runs and why she needs to buy GARDENING supplies. Please tell me this is a running gag or secret code word?

Shadow should really give Alice some time off to grieve and handle legal business instead of checking in on her everyday. "Fine weather"? What does weather have to do with visiting someone? It's not like there are major leaks or water damage. This is an interesting household indeed, since only Soon calls Alice as "Miss Alice". I'm surprised to see Shun taking this fake "housekeeper" job seriously too.

*sobs* I still have to pay FULL tuition just to be in a class that's ONLINE. *sighs* The school system must really hate their students. Anyways, LOL, I agree with Dan - everyday's a vacation when you're at home! Off topic! Back to the scheduled review!

"Ridiculous purple-black suit", LOL, Soon is a savage! And poor Shun, being called a housekeeper! Anyways, ugh, Shadow is so annoyingly persistent! It's a wonder that Clara and Ben approved of him - either that, or they found his persistence admirable. You could literally see right through his intentions - he might as well just tell her straightforwardly that he only wants her money to save the trouble. I'm really hoping Alice can tell him 'no' so they could stop with the 'Let's get married on this date'/'No, I don't feel well' talk. Let's hope Alice can be strong and say 'no' soon.

Good thing that Alice has Soon and Chris who care about her! Alice doesn't seem like she fully trusts Shun, which is understandable, as he just got to the house, and both Soon and Chris are both keeping their eyes on him. It'll be a lot harder for Shun to smuggle out any valuables when there are three women on his tail.

Oh gosh, I hope Alice is okay! Perhaps she caught a cold or something like that because of the weather? Maybe she's just so exhausted after all of the events, as everything happened so fast? Whatever it is, hopefully the homemade medicine will patch her up in time for a charity ball! Update soon!

I appreciate period dramas as well, but this traditional system of courting versus modern day dating is still difficult to grasp. I don't see a professional matchmaker either, especially since Clara and Ben are back in their home country. If I read correctly, Shadow eventually wants Shun to convince Alice to register for marriage with Shadow? I still don't know what they're both thinking!

"Fine weather"? Go to hell, Shadow! Nobody asked you for your opinion. Everyone hates Shadow. I don't think he'll proceed with his plan anytime soon! Losing a loved one can affect people differently, but Alice doesn't appear to be grieving at all...unless you consider "compulsive shopping" as her way of coping.
What would be the consequences of Alice saying No? I really don't want her to end up rejecting Shadow, who ends up...murdering Alice. I've seen too much of this scenario on the news. So things could go two ways for Shun. Either steal whatever's valuable and give it to Shadow (or keep it for himself), or actually try to me "matchmaker" and convince Alice to say yes. But what does his gut feeling say?
Seriously though. Shun literally knows nothing about Shadow's plan, and performing manual labor at home is the most boring thing ever.

I wouldn't call them "con artists" exactly. They do what they do, but they have their hardships. Although I think Marucho forges more than just birth certificates. Even if Shadow says that he'll give Shun a portion of the profits, I still think he'll keep it all for himself and have Shun be the scapegoat in the end. Also, Shun doesn't know what Shadow is thinking? I don't know what Shun is thinking! Stop staring at Alice!

Yay, new year, new story! Anyways, oh, poor Alice! She's lost both her parents and most recently, her grandfather, and has to find a suitor to get married?! MY GIRL'S A STRONG INDEPENDENT WOMAN WHO DON'T NEED NO MAN...but a butler is justifiable...I guess. Now that I think about it, Shun and the gang (Dan, Runo, Marucho, etc.) sound a lot like Robin Hood and his merry men! It's so sweet of them to steal for orphans. Anyways, Shadow's pretty disgusting. He's being pretty manipulative by taking advantage of Alice's condition just to make a quick buck. I understand how that would be beneficial, but it's still a scummy move to make, nevertheless. And ooh, I can sense some 'love-at-first-sight' sort of situation going on~! But to answer your question, everything in this chapter is going great so far! The one thing that threw me off a *little* bit was when Clara and Ben boarded a taxi to the train station. Automobiles were created in the far later years of the Victorian era and since you didn't specify the time period, I guess it would work. I mostly use horse-drawn carriages as a means of transportation in my period era stories since I like them better, but automobiles are fine! Update soon~!

That girl talk between Alice and Aunt Clara about marriage and inheritance is rather sad. Everything seems so poorly planned or wrong topic at wrong time. I prefer that Shadow never comes back. If he left on good terms (which doesn't sound like it based on Shun's attitude) then visiting is fine. Of course Shadow comes back when he's desperate for help. Shun's too nice to accept the deal!

Why is there more (family) death again in this first chapter?!
And thanks for ruining my impression and expectations of Shadow...not that I felt very positive about him to begin with.

Inheritance. [sigh] Based on what I've seen elsewhere, some people can't get it until their a certain age, done with school, married, whatever...people are crazy, and people that want to steal your inheritance are craziER. I'm interested in more about the daily lives of Dan/Runo/Marucho/Shun. Does that mean they're orphans or family-less as well?

LOL I didn't think Shun had any outlooks for life at all. But doesn't seem like a bad guy. He stopped Dan from wasted money (somewhat). He pointed out possible loopholes and major ethical violations associated with Alice's inheritance. He's really careful, that's all I see so far.

You never know. Maybe he'll make a mistake now that he finally saw what Alice looks like. Didn't think he'd fall for "love at first sight" either HAHAHA...

UPDATE!

Happy 2020! This is different...your other stories had an Asian feel to it but this is leans Victorian.
If Chris didn't work for Alice, then she'd probably work for that con family as well given those gleaming eyes! Love and money don't mix (either talk about hearts or gold...you know what I mean), but how can Alice be sure that Chris (and Soon) aren't after her inheritance either? Chris is so funny!
So Shadow is/was THAT kind of guy...no wonder he followed up with Clara. I don't know what this household is doing, but if they're truly (illegally) taking care of orphans, then I'll let it slide. Definitely getting some traditional feels here...from marriage to household dynamics to favoring boys over girls...
"Flawless yet distressed" sounds about right...poor Shun. Keep him overloaded with housework, and he'll ask to quit XD
