A nice story told succinctly. It was a treat not to have to suffer chapter after chapter of angst & obstinacy.

As soon as the candles were mentioned on the tree my mind went straight to what a fire hazard fir & pine trees, with paper decorations, & lit with candles were! When I was young real trees were the norm (rather than the far too popular artificial trees these days) and fire departments put out frequent & strong warnings with demonstrations about the fire risks of trees as they began to dry out and that’s with electric lighting. I can’t imagine choosing to use lit candles! BUT, in this story it’s particularly pointed when Margaret teases John about his usual complaint of the fire hazard in light of the intense disagreement between the two back when Mr. Hale tried to introduce them after John’s lesson.

When I reread the novel or rewatch the miniseries, I’m always struck by how little impression John’s description of the mill fire & loss of do many lives seem to make on Margaret at the time. She was so fired up with her own indignation over how she perceived his treatment of his workers she might as well have been wearing emotional Kevlar. Gosh, it makes me remember how much ‘smarter’ I was when I was that young, LOL!

Timing is everything, darn it!

I always feel so bad for John when it gets to the point in a story where he wants to hope again & is edging upon risking it, knowing full well how likely it is that Margaret will get her ire up over some real or imagined small thing & lay into him again. It’s painful to see an otherwise powerful man practically shiver in fear of having his heart crushed again. This story, this chapter has a nice balance going. The tension between his hope & his fear are palpable, but still Margaret is clueless both on his part & her own. I’m just dying to thunk her on her forehead before telling her to grow-up & pay attention to the clues while stuffing her self-righteous, knee-jerk defensiveness deep in a pocket somewhere.

This is my favorite FanFiction other than A heart for Milton. But I just love your story. I hope you write more. So beautifully done.. I’ve read it through twice and I’m going to read it again and again.
