for A Rodeo Star's Lament

Just as your voice for Pony is always so strong and impactful, I love as you've delved inside of Sodapop's head here. I love that you've taken the small bone S.E. Hinton threw us about Soda being horse crazy, and turned it into a one-shot like this :)
As always, your descriptions are beautiful. I feel the dirt in my own teeth here, and I can feel Soda's heartbreak upon having it all taken away, and it being a reminder of all he's lost now, too.
It's wonderful to see your take on this subject, I love it! :)
Happy New Year!

I love looking at Soda the rodeo star, Soda the cowboy. I absolutely love the physicality of your writing so very much, the sounds, sights and smells and I so feel that absolute ache Soda feels missing the rodeo, missing his parents, Dally, Johnny, missing his youth and childhood and freedom and possibilities.

Soda , almost being able to touch the horse and seeing himself in the young bronc rider and as much as this story is such a great look at Soda's specific experience, there's something so universal in it about growing up and that bittersweet nostalgia.

I really enjoyed this story, thank you :)

This is such a great story, you wrote the senses and the atmosphere so well. I also like the second layer - its not just riding in the rodeo that Soda misses, its the life that he had outside of it as well. So much has changed since then and his worries are much more "serious". So sad

your imagery is so rich here, i can see and smell and feel everything happening perfectly. i joke a lot that sodapop is the original "horse girl" archetype, but what you've given us is so much richer. i love the idea of stillness, and how the only moment he found it was before the gates were opened and he was out in front of everyone like a star. and more than anything, that connection to his father - that's what he misses, more than just the arena and the joy he felt while there. this was a beautiful thing to braid into the loss of the rodeo. his response to ponyboy, too, is really telling - i like to think of soda as honest, but here you've challenged it in a really tender way. there's no real way for pony to know what exactly soda misses, even it's obvious he does. soda keeping this to himself is both fitting and painful; emotionally, this moment is just hitting every one. this was really beautiful, more than anything, and i'm happy to read your writing as always :)

I swear I’m going back to writing on my own when I read this.

I absolutely love the imagery in this. That and the dialogue really deliver an element of nostalgia. Sodapop is supposed to be “horsecrazy,” but I’ve never actually seen anyone elaborate on that. Amazing writing-as always.

You seriously honestly have ZERO clue how happy I get when I see you've posted something! I felt like this story had a different sort of feel than most of your other stories, but that didn't make it any less of an enjoyable read! :D Nice work!
