Indigo! This was so awesome! I’m not sure where to start. I love the line “islands of common ground in their river of misunderstanding.” This suits them so well.

Maria actually held up pretty well when he was telling her she was leaving. I would have been crying much sooner than she was. It was pretty noble of Georg to pretend that this was something that he and Elsa agreed on because clearly this was all her doing. I don’t think the no governess plan would work actually very long in that house.

I love love love the whole paragraph about the trees and what they are reminding Maria of when she is sitting in the boat.

Frau Schmidt is fabulous in this too. I like that she is so open about her disapproval of the engagement. It is sweet how she keeps Gretl’s secret without a second thought. And the coat room, oh the coat room! I wish Frau Schmidt would have had this kind of scene in the movie, where she got to openly state her opinion.

But the best part of this whole story for me was the repurpose of “you can if you want to”. You know that line kills me. Now I can secretly always think of it as a marriage proposal instead of Georg’s indifference.

Well done! This was so worth the wait!

So lovely. I can just imagine the two of them trapped behind the curtain together.

I really loved this story, it's so beautifully written ! Georg sending Maria away literally broke my heart, but the ending was so sweet !

Ahhhh oh my gosh oh my gosh! You have outdone yourself and I would have waited a year for this, if I had to. I don’t know why, but I always imagined this scene from Georg’s perspective (him enduring the engagement, trying to control his feelings by sending her away, his regret and yearning…) - what was so fascinating is you painted these same emotions simply from Maria observing him! And I LOVED what you did with Maria - her heartbreak not only at losing him and the children, but the sense of being disowned, which was so perfect for this story. Loved the little bits of humour, Gretl smug in her rain gear and Frau Schmidt discovering the two of them in the coat room. Wonderful, evocative (colliding, slowly and softly - SO apt!), understated writing, and the ending - ahh, swoon. Thank you for this piece!

Very very good story. Such shame it's just one chapter and M give up so easily. I think she should be taking some time for herself not jump in his hands after he changed his mind.
