I like the realistic acceptance that not everybody is going to come out of this as if it's never happened (far too commonplace in the series itself, which never had the time and/or the capacity and/or the will to explore the many ramifications of some of the events that took place). As for those crewmen who can't be cured, well, the outlook for them is extremely grim. There's no saying that the parasites remaining wouldn't promptly re-modify their behaviour if they were allowed to spread, and the plague would be let loose. Effectively, those people are never going to be allowed to mingle with their own kind again - or with anyone else either.

I hope the Dolizet, having been made aware of what the parasites do to others, will make an effort to warn and/or protect other visiting species from becoming infected. If they themselves are safe enough it's understandable that they're not interested in administering a dangerous cure, but they have a social responsibility now they're aware of the issue. It's very much to be hoped that they keep that in mind.

Very characteristic philosophising from Captain Archer, who could perhaps have benefited from a dose of the same at the end of 'Cogenitor' rather than letting his temper (and his mouth) rip. I hope it may have taught him a little more humility - it sounds as if the seeds have been sown, but what depth of soil there is to nurture them... hmmm.

Anyway. An excellent story. I hope you'll write more, very shortly!

Loved this story - I looked forward to each chapter everyday and will miss it. I will look out for more of your stories. Thank you for an entertaining few weeks

OK, I'm reserving a special hard slap for T'Pol. OK, it wasn't her fault but her actions were unjust and she endangered the life of one of her junior officers. So I reckon she ought to say SOMETHING. If not 'sorry', which would probably choke this extremely unpleasant version of her, she could offer a commendation of how a single man had managed not only to survive her attempts to have him killed (or at least her collusion in those of others) but to rescue the whole ship's crew PLUS however many more the Enterprise could ultimately have infected. You know, the bloke who has only a vague grasp of biology and is not particularly proof against being thumped to a pulp by his crewmates...

And Travis. I'll just give him a 'hmmm.'

Hmm. Finally Jonathan forced a way past his supersize ego, though I wasn't impressed by his saying it would have been easier with Trip because Trip knows what he's thinking. He damn well isn't WITH Trip, so he just has to swallow the medicine.

As for the chunks of tree not being in the picture, just as well. I'd have been hitting a few people with them by now!

Sorry, Captain, this is not the time or the place for a sudden fit of moralising. It's kill or be killed, and be damned to the new-life-form end of things.

It would seem that T'Pol has taken the bait - though with this story I'm cautious of optimism. I'll save the rest of what I have for hoping Malcolm will survive being the lab rat for this cure!

As it's absolutely imperative to get T'Pol on their side, I don't understand why they can't contrive some opportunity for an ambush when she's alone -
say, the captain could summon her to his Ready Room and be waiting with a phase pistol on stun in one hand and a hypospray in the other. Mass attacks are certainly not feasible, but even a few more on their side would help; people must still be going to sickbay for this and that, and who's to say what Phlox administers? Seems to me that no-one has considered the softly, softly approach, but time is ticking away...

I am really enjoying the story! I love the plot twists and I eagerly await each new chapter!

Apart from making vengeful noises off, (yeah, Jonathan, you'd really better start pulling your finger out, and T'Pol could handle a dose of reality too, and as for Trip, we won't even go there) I really could stand up and applaud some of your character insights here. The last three paragraphs are simply inspired; at that sentence 'that wall of fear disguised as self-possession and perpetual quiet dread that masqueraded so convincingly as confidence' my eyes actually filled up.

The dropping of the second shoe - what a masterly description. All the tortured searching for belonging that's so brilliantly shown in 'Shuttlepod One' - the admission to 'I've invested far too much time trying to figure you out, Mister Tucker. I'm not about to accept it was all for nothing' - and now it's all exploded in his face. I suspect he hesitated on the brink for a long time before finally deciding to commit the trust that came so hard to him, and this is what he's got by way of a reward.

No. This is NOT going to be easy to fix!

You now have at least one reader who is waving flags, throwing streamers and generally dancing the fandango (theoretically, you'll be glad to hear). Good ol' Phlox and hurrah for parasites that evaded Decon!

I just hope there'll be someone still breathing in the Brig by the time Archer gets there!

Well - let's hope that jab works on Denobulans the same way it works on Humans, because otherwise it could be a bit awkward. But there's a second tiny step forward accomplished, so at least that's hopeful.

Oh, and just as I decide I hate Trip the most, you've made me decide Captain Archer is the biggest arsehole on the ship. And T'Pol's coming up fast on the inside rail, too...

Some of those things Malcolm's said are downright worrying, though. His injuries haven't been treated and it looks like they're not going to be, at least until or unless that jab works its way into Phlox's bloodstream. So hang on, Malcolm, you're not going to get any significant help any time soon!

Finally! Hooray! A breakthrough!

Now, everything depends on how long this shot lasts, and what can Trip do while it does? Because when it wears off, we're back to Square One.

Yes, Trip. You SHOULD feel bad. You should feel AWFUL. And I don't care about what the spice did, you've been absolutely vile, and to a man you still have the gall to think of as your 'friend'!

I think if the crew of the NX-01 get through all this, there will be so much humble pie eaten that the food recyclers will have to be re-programmed to cope with the volume!

Oh, for pity's sake. It's a testament to how utterly physically depleted he is that he's succumbed to this nadir of the emotions - yes, he's usually a bit on the gloomy-looking side, but given his history (and you refer to his childhood issues with his father), it would be more remarkable if his attitude was all sweetness and light. And now he's got beaten like a punchbag by various individuals who hadn't even got the nerve to look him in the face while they did it.

Please, give him - and me! - a break!
9/17 c17 LoyaulteMeLie
You get the feeling that there's *some* rationality left in Archer's brain - it tries to struggle to the surface then gets tired and gives up. But as for Malcolm using up his only shot with the hypospray, well, really he didn't have any choice. I can imagine Trip getting angry enough to kill, and in this scene he definitely was - as if it wasn't enough to carry on with his non-stop bitching to the captain. For an essentially nice character, you're surely doing a good job of making me want to slap him into the middle of next week! Faintly surprised that Travis didn't even try to intervene, but...

Well. Let's see how this cave turns out. And in the meantime, is that shot going to do any good?
9/16 c16 LoyaulteMeLie
Ohhhh my. It was always on the cards, but I hoped it wouldn't happen. But you can only push a fighter so far, and I'd imagine the pent-up frustration Malcolm feels by this time is pretty well equivalent to a couple of tons of TNT.

I'm not sure Trip is going to come out of this very well. He's drugged, he's lost his temper and he's taking on the ship's self-defence expert. What could possibly go wrong?
9/15 c15 LoyaulteMeLie
In this situation I'm frankly surprised Malcolm doesn't want to investigate anything that's unusual...he needs to find any loose threads. But I suppose he's got enough on his plate right now, especially with Archer cranking up even harder on the theme of him being no longer welcome on board.

If they manage to get all this sorted out, there had better be a boatload of grovelling apologies for all the hurtful things that have been said. And yes, Trip, I'm looking at you too - some 'best friend' you are right now!
