Even before Bernie's accidental slip in asking Elliot how Olivia's funeral was and referring to his former partner as his beautiful bride, I have wondered if it would be his mother who inadvertently reveals what happened. I still believe that to some degree, the kids knew about Olivia's ordeal, but for whatever reason either chose not to tell their father, or had been dissuaded from doing so by their mother. It may have all been in the pretense of protecting him, but when the truth comes out, it's going to come as a crushing blow. Not just the knowledge that he was absent for the most harrowing and traumatic events of Olivia's life (and in turn the most joyful with her adoption of Noah), but the fact that it was kept secret from him. Nothing can turn back the hands of time now, and erase those missing years, and no apology can make up for the fact that Elliot wasn't there when Olivia needed him most, but he can be there for her now.

Again, I’ve said it in other comments but Bernie will be the one to spill the Lewis stuff if it ever comes up. - ClassicTVJunkie

This would be possible if the writers actually let them have a full conversation. Without panic attacks and drugs and voicemails. - ClassicTVJunkie

This is a great take on what Olivia's inner thoughts must have been like when Elliot showed up at her door so unexpectedly. The mental turmoil she must have faced, pulled in two directions at once. Torn between the man she had known for so many years versus the one who is in her life now sending her so many mixed messages. Not to mention the way the rug was pulled completely out from under her feet when she learned that the letter contained Kathy's words, and not her former partner's. Despite everything, I still think the day is coming when Olivia needs to give Elliot a piece of her mind, and I look forward to the time when he is in the right headspace to not only explain his own reasons, but listen to hers.

I still love this so freaking much. But yeah, if we had just had that little second part after she called Ayanna. You know the little explanation of WHY he still gave her the letter all would be right in the fandom. Im leaning towards this as the reason. He thought she had moved on, wanted to give her an out. Maybe that was even Kathy’s intention, to give Liv an out if she didn’t want to see them. I’d just like some answers people! - ClassicTVJunkie

I'm glad you're still continuing this. Now that we know the truth behind not only the contents of the letter, but the person who dictated them, I'm glad you touched on a possible theory as to what would have made Elliot decide to still give it to Olivia. I like the fact that in your version, it's not completely linear. I have wondered if it was partly out of duty to Kathy that he felt like he had to, that the grief compelled him. But here, where he sees the way Olivia is acting toward him, how she is with Noah, the way she is *without* him in her life, and wonders if it isn't somehow better that he lets her go. I want to believe that the reason Olivia sought Elliot out so quickly after reading those words was because she didn't believe it was his hand that had written them. But that night was the beginning of Elliot pushing Olivia away again, for what he believed was her own safety. It's a whole lot of mixed messages, and Olivia is patient for sticking by him. But then I always knew she would.
