I like how you manage to show Jon's personality divided between king and parent. Vania has a bit of a celebrity-crush, I think...

I think Vania has a bit of a crush on Kel... not so sure it'll work out though!

This is better than if pierce wrote it herself. The story is fantastic thank you so much for gifting us with these incredible characters and stories!

I'm currently halfway through this story, and off the bat, I want you to know that this is one of the best fan stories I've read in this story arc. I'm 27 and I have been reading Tamora Pierce for as long as I can remember. She shaped my life in many ways, and your writing style is close enough to hers thus far to be another story of hers. Make sure to be descriptive - Pierce is big on intense descriptors of situations to describe the action. It's a 'show, don't tell' thing. I intend to finish this and the sequel, but needed to express my appreciation here first.

I'm really happy with the pairings. Roald taking Fianola will be very good for her career in diplomacy. Even if she doesn't become his Champion, she's well on her way to being groomed as his right hand. With Liam taking Gerald, and Jon taking Ahmad, all the Conte knights will be breaking squires together. That should make for some fun letters between them. And between the squires.

Kel taking Vania, with bonus healer training from Neal, is almost as good as getting Alanna, who couldn't take her because she's her godmother. That, and apparently when Alanna was easing through that discussion with Vania, she was merely giving socially acceptable excuses for a decision she'd already made. Anyways, Vania's very happy with squiring for Kel, and we'll all get to see how that dream come true works out for her.

As for Emmy and Alanna, that is a very natural pairing, for all the reasons Alanna said, and more. The conservatives will howl, but they're already howling so that doesn't matter one whit. And I'm sure each one with the remotest ability to detect magic will likely annoy her considerably during the days before her ordeal, wanting to check her over for themselves, and all they will find is the mark on her arm.

(And for the record for all you other readers, one of my long shot favorites was Turomot, actually, out of respect for her innate character and a desire to protect her as he once protected Kel.)

So that leaves Roland, poor fellow. When will we get to find out about Roland's knightmaster?

I read the Tamora Pierce books probably once a year. I can see myself adding this story to that tradition. Honestly, it’s how I felt when Protector of the Small was coming out! I can’t wait for the next chapter to come out!

If you ever want a beta reader feel free to send me a message! Now I’m off to reread the series again. You’ve inspired me!

There's so much to say for this chapter! The royals squelching the "true heir" comment is intriguing. In a way, that seemed like an attempt to protect Tirragen from responsibility for that upcoming fiasco by avoiding a direct link in the councillors' minds, as well as keeping investigation options open. I liked the mixed dynamic between the royals and the councilors, and also Turomot's strong regard for Emmy and Xander at the end. And the undercurrent of the relationship between Vania and Emmy made the trial especially poignant.

I'm relieved that the guards issue turned out to have nothing to do with the captain, because he seemed a decent sort of guy. Perhaps part of the punishment for the bribed guards includes becoming citizens of Tirragen, and moving out to a village there to become farmers under royal confinement to the fief for the duration of the tax penalty. -That- would discourage anyone else from accepting similar bribes.

This was such an interesting chapter. I love how Emmy feels so bound to chivalry that she turns herself in knowing this is what's in store, and taking it so honorably is such an interesting way to see things played out. Where are Vania and the Queen in all of this? I can't wait to see what happens next

This chapter really takes a turn for the grim. With his final words, "for Tirragen", Darius effectively damns the entire fief. But it's his other words, spoken to Vania, "the true heir is rising", that really got my attention. It makes me wonder if Roger may have passed his magical potency on to a child or two, who would be ripe pawn(s) for whoever is masterminding the current mess.

I especially appreciated the captain's courtesy to Emmy even as he had her shackled. But the guards later coming in saying the captain had given them free rein to beat her seemed a strong change for him. It makes me think they are lying, bullies just making sport where they think they can get away with it, and I hope they get into trouble.

So how long has Darius been planning that bit of fun. I would guess the seeds formed when he read the letter inviting Emmy to the royal wedding, as that would've been the first he realized their friendship. Is he trying to discredit Tirragen as a whole, just to get her kicked out of the training? Or does he have more going on? With him claiming the title of Lord among certain acquaintances, he might be staking a claim for the fief.

Although really, there's a lot of methods that would be much less obvious than poisoning the princess. I wonder who Vania has stashed in the next teahouse over, and how long it'll be before the rescuer(s) realize something is amiss. On with the next chapter already!

An excellent callback to the previous fight. I like how the plot has been thickening slowly for the past two years, but because "these worries are too great for such youngsters", the adults have kept the knowledge away from the pages. I look forward to Emmy's future musings on it, and I'm sure she'll get the others of her year thinking on it too.

The relationship between Vania and Emmy seems to be progressing in a delightfully confusing manner. Their age and status gaps are proving to be quite significant obstacles, as well as social convention. Lianne's advice is good, but really difficult for a teen to deal with. Wait two YEARS? That may as well be a lifetime to a sixteen year old.

These latest chapters have been really fun to read. Vania's transference of feeling from hero-worshipping Kel to confused intensity over Emmy is an intriguing transition, likely enhanced by her own rescue from the hurrok. She is shaping Emmy into her own page in shining armor, and I hope she won't overlook the real girl while she's mooning over her idealistic heroine.

I must admit, haMinch's commentary about Tibout just getting a fine made me groan. All too real.

fantastic

I found this story a week ago and absolutely love it. You've done a great job with the group dynamics, especially how the pages have changed how they've related to each other over time. Your depiction of the age gap among the girls is very believable. I think the way haMinch tried to break down cliques by forcing the whole year to work together, showed strength of character for him, as well. Whether or not he likes training girls, he accepted the requirement with the position, and is doing his duty well.
