DENSIMEMBER 2020

Today's writing prompt comes via ryan9098:

Kensi and Deeks visit Donald Blye's grave.

[I hope ryan9098 doesn't mind my alteration]

FRIENDS IN HIGH PLACES

Deeks was restless. Kensi had left for work and he was done tidying the kitchen, Monty had been walked and he just wasn't ready to head into the bar. Trying to put on a brave face for his wife has been stressful. Most days, since he was furloughed, he was able to pull it off. But then the news that his position was gone and FLETC wasn't even an option now.

Kensi was so excited about that house. He was too. But now…..

He needed to get out of the house. He grabbed his keys and headed for his truck. Thoughts rumbling around his head. So much so, he hadn't realized that he was at the gate of Los Angeles National Cemetery. He sighed. A crazy idea, but no worse than the ones he has had. Maybe he just needed to talk to someone. Deeks pulled ahead and followed the familiar trail to maybe the one person who could understand how he was feeling.

The morning sun had warmed the stone identifying the final resting place of Master Sgt. Donald Blye, USMC. Deeks looked around and then sat down wishing he could talk to his father-in-law. Or maybe it was better he couldn't. What would Don think of his current predicament? Would he chastise him for not being able to provide for his princess? Would he look at him, disappointed. God knows Deeks felt disappointed. It was then another father's voice started invading his thoughts. A voice he never wanted to hear again.

"See! I was right. Out of work, that pipe dream of bar, bleeding you dry. Although, it would have been nice to be able to drink for free." Deeks felt the shudder going down his spine.

But then something happened. The two voices, Don's and Gordon's talking to each other. Ok, now he knows he is crazy. Deeks closed his eyes and listened. Don was fighting for Deeks. Going on about all that his son-in-law had accomplished. That he was proud that Kensi was married to him. A tear slipped down his cheek. Not many people had fought for him. But there was a man, he never met, chasing his own father out of his head. And Deeks felt the real relief and then he heard Don speak to him.

"Martin Deeks, you listen to me. You are a good man. You are a hard worker, honest kind and my daughter loves you with everything she has. You will get through this, you just need to be patient. Trust Kensi. Trust your gut. You'll know what to do. Just hold on to each other."

And then he was gone. Deeks opened his eyes. The noonday sun was shining down. And although his face was wet from tears he hadn't realized he cried, he felt freer. Deeks stood up, nodded his thanks and left for his truck.

When Deeks got home, got the ingredients together for one of his wife's favorite meals. They will sort this out together.

Happy Holidays Everyone!

They always do.
