On The Front Lines

A Seussical Fan Fiction

Hello! I am back again with another Seussical oneshot. This one is set after The Military Academy song and takes place at the Military Academy. It deals with how JoJo and the other cadets feel about the Butter Battle... which is not really explored in the play. This takes place in early September.. much like when kids go back to school. Character ages in this story are not in lineage with ages of the actual actors!

Jojo arrived at the Military Academy around 1:30pm that day. He watched as the cadets marched up and down the lawn in their formations. He was desperately homesick and wished his parents had not sent him away to war.

He felt someone tap his shoulder and turned around to see an unfamiliar boy smiling at him.

"Hey, I'm Carlos. I'm going to be your roommate."

Jojo smiled. "It's nice to meet you. Are you new to the academy too?"

Carlos shook his head. "No, I've been here for five weeks. I'll show you the ropes and introduce you around to some of the other cadets."

Jojo nodded "Okay."

Once Jojo unpacked his backpack and unrolled his bedroll he wasted no time asking Carlos this first thing that came to his mind.

"Why are we fighting this war?"

Carlos shrugged. " I wish I knew. No one really knows the reason."

"What's the training for the war like?"

Carlos grimaced. "Brutal. The general works us like dogs. We spend most of the day training and don't get too much free time."

"What about our school work?"

"We have all our academics in the morning from 7:30-11:30. After lunch is when we train for about 5 hours until dinner."

"When is the war officially set to start?"

"Soon. Probably in the next month or month and a half."

How long are we going to be here for?"

Carlos shrugged. "Hopefully not too long. I want to be home by the Christmas pageant."

" So do I." Jojo nodded in agreement.

Jojo followed Carlos back down to the lawn where the cadets were practicing their formations

At dinner time Carlos and Jojo grabbed a table with three other girls.

Ladies this is Jojo. He's new to school. "

The blonde haired girl smiled. "Hi I'm Alexa. This is Aubrey, Savannah and Ava. It's nice to meet you."

"It's nice to meet you all. How old are you?" he asked Alexa.

"I'm 12. You look like you're about my age."

Jojo nodded. "I'm turning 13 in a couple weeks."

"Don't you think we're too young to be fighting in the war?"

Aubrey nodded. "Yeah. We shouldn't be here at all. This is sucking our childhood and innocence away."

"How old are you?" Jo Jo asked

"We're 13 and a half. We're twins. No one can tell us apart!" Savannah said.

Carlos swallowed some mashed potatoes" I'm one of the older cadets. I'll be sixteen in a month. I don't think you guys will really be on the front lines so much but General Schmitz wants to train as many of us as he can."

"I hate to defy the general but what difference does it make it if we eat our bread butter side up?" Jo Jo asked.

Alexa shrugged. "We think the reasoning behind this war is nonsense. Jojo, you're the Mayor's son right?"

Jo Jo nodded slowly.

" Are they working hard back home to make sure that this war doesn't last a long time and we'll be home faster?"

Jo Jo shrugged his shoulders. "I don't really know. I sure hope so. I've only been here for less than 24 hours and I'm already homesick."

"We're all in the same boat." Ava said.
