Lunch

As Mike finished the paragraph he was reading, he realised hadn't really taken it in, he stared at the page for a moment then reread the last couple of sentences. Still not absorbing what he was reading he placed the motion down on his desk and took a break. He stretched, leaned back in his chair and exhaled heavily. Looking down at the pile of motions he still had to work through he decided to take a longer break. He gazed into the middle distance for a few seconds then came to the conclusion that what he really needed was a distraction. He lifted his phone from his desk, went to messages and selected her entry. A small, involuntary smile crossed his face as read the initials he'd labelled it with; G.M. Cell. He opened a message and given he didn't know if she was free to talk or what he wanted to talk about he decided to keep it simple.

(Mike): Hey. He hit send and a few moments later his phone dinged.

(G.M.): Hello Mr Cutter. Mike blinked, surprised by the form her response had taken.

(Mike): Mr Cutter?

(G.M.): I don't know about you, but I'm at work. His smile grew as he gathered she was in a playful mood.

(Mike): Right, of course. So...what are you up to? He played along.

(G.M.): Well, to the casual observer it would appear that I'm working. He furrowed his brow slightly at her reply, wondering where she was going.

(Mike): But...? He prodded.

(G.M.): I'm actually having inappropriate (for work) thoughts about a certain handsome ADA who works at the Manhattan DA's office. He quietly chuckled at her answer, then decided to allow himself to have a little fun.

(Mike): What kind of thoughts?

(G.M.): It started innocently enough, I was just thinking about him sitting there, in his office, hard at work. After reading her reply and noticing it was incomplete it occurred to him she was dragging it out on purpose. Delighted by that, he sat back and waited eagerly for the next text.

(G.M.): Then I remembered he has a sofa in his office.

(G.M.): Wonderful things, sofas. Very versatile, you can sit and talk, snuggle up and read, take a nap. There so many things you do on a sofa... After her last message Mike lifted his eyes and looked across the room at said sofa, his mind began to conjure images of them together on it. Knowing she had quite the imagination he suddenly found himself very curious to know exactly how she would choose to use the sofa.

(Mike): What would you do on a sofa? He speedily typed.

(G.M.): Are you sure you want to know? It might ruin your concentration. He could practically hear her chuckling as he read her teasing remark.

(Mike): I'm already not concentrating, I can't be anymore distracted. I'm sure.

What followed his confirmation was a deliberately drawn out series of very articulate and descriptive texts detailing exactly what she wanted to do to him and with him on that sofa. As he read the increasingly X-rated messages he swallowed hard and began to feel warm. After he read the last one he immediately lifted his eyes to the sofa. His mind was flooded with visions of exactly what she had described, he felt his cheeks redden and wondered if he looked as flushed as he felt. Several moments passed before he was snapped out of his fantasy by his phone dinging and looked down.

(G.M.): Hey Mikeā€¦ His eyes remained glued to his phone in anticipation of her next message.

(G.M.): Wanna meet for lunch? ;) His eyes widened and he typed his reply with the speed and urgency of a man in the desert being offered water.

(Mike): Yes, where?

Jack sat in his office rewriting the sixth paragraph of his speech for the third time. He skimmed over what he had just written and shook his head. This latest rewrite still didn't quite convey what he was trying to get across. He glanced down at the time in the corner of his laptop screen and deemed it late enough to take a break for lunch. After saving and closing his speech, he sat back and commenced an internal debate about what to eat. After awhile he had made no progress on choosing a cuisine but had come to the decision he did not feeling like eating alone today. He picked up his phone, opened his contacts and began slowly scrolling through them. He had gotten a little less than a quarter of the way through his contacts list when he came across her name. On seeing it he was reminded it had been longer than he had intended since they had last caught up. He selected her name and started composing a text inviting his niece to lunch.

(Jack): Hi Gabs, we've been meaning to catch up for awhile, are you free to have lunch with your favourite uncle today? He smiled as he pressed send, he was surprised to have barely placed his phone back on his desk when it pinged with her reply.

(Gabrielle): Hi Uncle Jack, I would love to catch up but I just made other plans, sorry! Rain check? He sighed softly at her declining the invitation but resolved to make plans for later in the week.

(Jack): Sure, no problem. I have a lunch meeting tomorrow, can you do Friday?

(Gabrielle): Yep, Friday's great! I can take my lunch hour whenever so just let me know when you can what time suits you. Her reply came at a speed that, given the length of the message, both impressed him and made him feel old.

(Jack): Okay, will do. See you Friday. He sent a final message and slipped his phone into his pocket. Still not inclined to eat alone he stood and headed off to the bullpen to see if Mike or Connie could be coaxed into joining him for lunch.

(G.M.): Your place is closest. She pointed out, he agreed.

(Mike): I can be there in 15 mins.

(G.M.): I can be there in 10. He grinned at her reply as he quickly grabbed his coat. He put it on and slid his phone into the inside pocket as he crossed the office. He went to open his office door but before he could Connie opened it from the other side, they paused in the doorway.

"Hey Mike, I though we could talk about how we plan to argue some of these motions over some lunch." She smiled warmly.

"Hey, uh, I would but I have plans, I'm actually just on my way out." He explained hastily.

"Oh ok, we can talk when you get back. Have fun." She replied as her smiled faded slightly.

"Thanks." He responded then quickly turned and headed for the elevators.

"Must be some exciting plans." Jack mused as he appeared from the hallway beside Mike's office in time to see him hurrying away.

"Guess so." Connie quietly concurred.

"I know I'm not Mike but I'm on my way to grab some lunch, would you care to join me?" He asked, Connie turned to him visibly cheered by the offer.

"Yeah, that would be nice."

Fourteen and a half minutes after he left the office Mike rounded the corner and turned onto his street, as he did he saw her standing at the bottom of the stoop outside his building. He admired her as he quickly made his way along the street coming to a stop when he reached his building.

"Hi." Gabby grinned, finding both the day's turn of events and the effect she could see their conversation had had on him highly enjoyable.

"Hi." He smiled, a second later she closed the gap between them and kissed him.

"Lead on." She encouraged him as she glanced at the door to his building. They didn't speak as they went up to Mike's apartment, once there he unlocked the door and led her inside. The door hadn't even fully closed when he pulled her against him and they began to kiss fervently. They kept kissing as they began to undress each other and move in the direction of the bedroom. Partway across the room she broke the kiss, pulling back just enough to look at him.

"I have to know." She began.

"What?" He asked confused and a little frustrated at her halting things.

"Is this your first nooner?" She grinned curious.

"Uh, yeah." He admitted mildly embarrassed.

"Thought so, I promise I'll be gentle." She teased chuckling, he grinned and proceeded to pay her back by tickling her.

"Hey!" She exclaimed laughing and squirming away.

"Come here." He smiled as he ceased tickling her and drew her close, she smiled and they resumed kissing passionately.

A short while later they lay naked on Mike's bed, limbs entangled, breathing heavily. After only a minute or two Gabby set about disentangling herself from him.

"Already?" Mike queried, saddened the pleasurable interlude in his day was coming to an end.

"Yeah, I need to get dressed and have enough time to grab some lunch on the way back to work." She confirmed as she climbed out of bed. He followed her lead and they began to gather their clothes from where lay scattered around the room, whilst retrieving his tie from atop his dresser a thought struck him.

"How will you explain coming back from your lunch break having not eaten lunch?" He wondered aloud as they met at the foot of the bed.

"If anyone asks, I'll tell them the truth..." She started casually, he looked at her like she'd grown a second head.

"...something came up." She quipped, and they shared a chuckle. They got dressed in companionable silence, Gabby finishing before Mike. He noticed she was ready to leave and took her hand, he tugged it gently bringing her close. She smiled as he wrapped his arms around her waist, she rested her arms on his shoulders and looked at him expectantly.

"Come over tonight." He requested.

"Sure, if you want me to." She replied and he nodded eagerly.

"Okay, then I'll see you after work." She smiled moving to leave, but he kept hold of her.

"Love you." He told her and she became aware he was trying to drag things out.

"I love you too." Returning the sentiment she leaned in and gave him a quick kiss, he kissed her back drawing that out too.

"Bye." She said firmly but with a smile, he reluctantly let her go and she headed to the door.

"Hey..." He called after her. She stopped in doorway of the bedroom and looked back to see he was smirking.

"Thanks for lunch."
