Chapter 6

Darius was finding it difficult to sleep. He tossed and turned in his hospital bed. And then, when he finally was able to get some rest, horrifying images took form in his mind. He could see his friend's hands covered in blood as they rushed him into a jeep, and then back into the main compound.

The last thing he saw was Brooklynn's face looking utterly defeated with his blood smudged on the arms of her jacket, and then darkness.

"Please let me wake up. Please," he begged. The nightmare went on. The T Rex teeth from the skeleton morphed into the ones that had sunk into his skin. The ivory razors glistening red made him yell in total fear.

He shot awake. His breath came heavy in short bursts. Darius pushed away the realization that the events of the dream had actually happened. The analog clock on the wall read 4 AM.

Brooklynn was sleeping in the other room for the first time in the three or so days of peace on Isla Taca?o. Since Darius no longer needed constant medical attention, he had told her to get some proper rest in a comfortable bed instead of being smushed next to him.

However, Darius did miss her presence next to him. "As well as her feeble attempts to tickle me," Darius thought to himself.

He walked over to the window, looking out at the moonlit canopy of trees. He needed to get out of bed. The boy exhaled, fogging up the glass for a second. The AC was really high tonight. He would have to adjust it in the morning. His eyes wavered with fatigue, but shot open upon catching sight of something outside the medical compound fence.

Darius could have sworn something was moving erratically through the trees, as they were being pushed aside as something walked by. He had half a mind to go out and follow it when Brooklynn suddenly grabbed his hand and led him into the hallway. "Wait, Brooklynn-"

"I missed you," she said, bringing him to the room she had claimed.

Darius relented, feeling very relieved he didn't have to go back to his hospital bed- especially after the nightmare he just had. Her hand was so warm against his clammy wrist. She was always so set on what she wanted.

"Wait, how can you miss me when you're asleep?" Darius asked.

"I just do, okay?" replied Brooklynn. The girl was grateful for the darkness of the hallway, as it hid the fact that she had been crying. She was missing home. Now that they once again had time to think, the reality of their situation settled in.

Darius hit the soft linens of a double bed, and was engulfed in cuddles by Brooklynn. The feeling was so familiar and relaxing it nearly put him back to sleep right then and there. He exhaled, and some pink hair got in his mouth from her nestling her head in the crook of his neck.

She held onto him tightly for a few seconds, and then relaxed. Hearing his heartbeat made her forget about their situation for a few precious seconds.

"Darius?"

"Mhm?"

"Do you... feel older?"

"I do."

"I do too. Why do we feel like that?"

"Well… we've been through things only a handful of living people have been through. Being hunted and reminded of our mortality every day," said Darius, turning his head to glance out the window.

"I guess that would make us grow up faster," Brooklynn reasoned.

Darius shifted. A thought occurred to him.

"Are you okay with this so far?" he asked nervously.

"This?"

"I mean, like bunking together."

"I'm more than okay with it. It makes me feel safe on an island where we could easily be lunch."

Darius smiled and gave her a gentle squeeze.

"Brooklynn?"

"Yeah?"

"Thanks for letting me sleep over."

"You could move in here, you know. You're- you're actually the reason my sleep schedule is better than how it was back home," said Brooklynn nervously, looking away from him.

"In that case, you got a deal," Darius said.

"Really? You don't mind me taking all the covers?" asked Brooklynn, turning to face him.

"Well I'll just take some of your body heat. For survival of course," said Darius, putting an arm over her and kissing her forehead.

"Of course. For survival."

Morning drifted over the campers, the sunlight seeming sluggish in the humid environment. For one of the campers, just the act of getting up was uncomfortable.

Ben was tired. Tired of being injured. It had been three days since being severely cut on the windshield of the boat. He stared out the window, looking out at the trees. The sight of them comforted him.

"The old me would have been more careful," he thought, looking down at his wounds. He then started a breathing exercise to relax. Halfway through, he stopped. "I'm not that wimp anymore," he said out loud, and slapped himself.

Flipping between the old and new Ben was exhausting. He once again wrapped his arm with some gauze. The slightest movement made him bleed, and he longed for the freedom of movement he took for granted.

He certainly wasn't jealous of his friends. But when he saw Brooklynn give Darius a piggyback ride, or Yasmina hold hands with Sammy, he did feel out of place.

He sat down in bed, cursing his arm. At least there were no embedded pieces of glass. He was resigned to the blood now.

He wondered what Bumpy was doing. Was she fitting in with the herd? They protected her from the Scorpius; he figured she was one of their own from that point on. He checked his watch. At this time of the morning, they would be finding a stream to wash up in or berries to eat. Instead he was stuck in bed.

He would give anything to hear her call out again, or nudge him. "She would be trying to carry me on her back if she saw me like this," Ben thought, looking at his red bandages.

He checked his watch again. June 22 2016. His mother's birthday. And then the tears fell. Lots of them as he thought of her alone in their apartment. She would be worried sick about him. Or think that he was dead. Ben wiped his tears and took a few deep breaths. He was shocked that the new personality he wore as armor had finally cracked.

Kenji knocked on the door, and Ben shouted for him to come in.

"Hey, you think you'll be able to go on the tour later?" Kenji asked.

"Sure!" Ben replied, pulling his mind back into the room. His hands quickly wiped his eyes so his friend wouldn't see.

Kenji nodded and walked out of the door frame, but doubled back. "It feels like it's been a while since I've seen you dude. Like, I was over the moon when we found you, but something was different. You've completely changed," Kenji admitted.

"Yeah, being alone on killer dino Island will do that to you," said Ben dryly, not making eye contact.

Kenji walked into the room and sat down in a chair.

"Hey, remember when you couldn't keep up with the others in the gyrospheres? Now you'd probably break one and probably hurt someone," Kenji half-laughed.

"I- I've just been doing the opposite of what feels natural to me. To be more useful, manly, whatever you want to call it," Ben said, his voice wavering.

"You know, I've been going through some changes too. Accepting that you guys are family, when I've never had any real friends, takes work. Going rogue to save Brooklynn was hasty. But that's what you do for friends, right?" Kenji ceded.

The jealousy Ben had been feeling towards his campmates was rising up again.

"You know, if you want a hug-" Kenji started, but Ben cut him off.

"Yeah, whatever. Listen, I'm gonna go make some breakfast," said Ben briskly, leaving Kenji looking a little hurt.

Brooklynn woke up to the sunlight drifting in from the tall windows. She lazily picked up her arm that was around Darius and got up. She put on a large grey sweater over her red shirt and put her half-pink, half-brown hair into a bun. She stretched her arms, yawning. "I can't remember ever sleeping that well at home," the girl mused to herself.

Darius awoke, opening his eyes to Brooklynn sitting on the bed in front of him.

"Wow," he breathed, enamored. "You're stunning."

Brooklynn walked over to him, and kissed his cheek. "Yes, I am," she said in his ear.

"I'm gonna grab breakfast. I'll wait up for you," said Brooklynn on her way out.

Darius' smile faltered a bit after she left. The pain in his side returned whenever she wasn't there.

Although after 3 days, his wounds had scabbed over entirely. Due to how large they were, movement was difficult for him. Luckily, they weren't deep.

Ben and Sammy quietly opened a few cans of soup and alternated pouring them into a large pot on the stove. The kitchens were modeled exactly like the original Jurassic Park, although this kitchen looked like it was straight out of the 90s instead of the old and decrepit one on Nublar.

Ben looked at the circular window on the door nervously, then turned back to Sammy.

"So you and Yasmina, huh?" Ben started.

"What?" replied Sammy.

"You guys are close," said Ben, looking at the soup.

"I mean yeah, I'd do anything for her. She's really come a long way. I guess we all have," Sammy said, nudging him with her elbow.

"Me especially, eh?" said Ben, scratching the back of his head.

"Yeah for sure, Tarzan!" said Sammy, finally smiling like the Sammy they all knew.

"You guys are really happy," Ben pushed.

"Ben I-" Sammy tried.

"Well, I did like her. What's not to like? She's strong, capable, and fast. It made me feel so special when she was vulnerable with me because you know she doesn't do that with just anyone," Ben stammered, his eyes shining.

Sammy stepped forward, and tentatively wrapped her hands around Ben. He was motionless, surprised by the sudden contact.

"I know how that feels, Ben. But it's her strength and weakness that draws me in. It's all of her," Sammy said carefully.

Ben was silent for a few moments.

"I know. After hearing about what she did to get that antidote, I accepted that you two were something special," Ben said.

"It still made me feel really alone though," he added.

Sammy tightened the hug. Tears then fell, unabashed.

"I'm sorry Sammy."

"I'm sorry Ben."

"No, you don't have anything to be sorry for. You're the strongest of us. You're optimistic despite everything, when everyone else went crazy. I would be a wreck if you- if you-" said Ben, his hands rising to return the hug.

Yasmina walked in through the metal door with the circular window, making both teens flinch.

"Am I interrupting something?" she asked.

After soup, Brooklynn sat next to Yaz on the break room couch. Darius was then challenged to an arm-wrestle by Ben, to which he heartily accepted. Kenji was uncharacteristically deep in a safety procedures book, not even noticing the battle taking place next to him.

Both of the girls went for their ankles to determine how much they were healing. Upon noticing they had done the same thing after sitting down, they smirked.

"How's yours?" they both asked each other at the same time.

"It's healing. Still a little sore from when I did my run," Yasmina reported.

"Mine feels okay, I don't feel pain when I walk anymore," said Brooklynn.

"Well that's good. We can run from dinosaurs again," said Yaz, sighing.

"Hey, at least we got a three day break from them," Brooklynn reasoned.

"Why should we stop at three?" said Yasmina with disdain.

Brooklynn looked pensive. "I know the tour isn't the safest, but we need to find out more about why this island is the way it is. Like why would it have an animatronic raptor?"

"Let's go snooping around then," said Yasmina with a mischievous smile.

"Now you're speaking my language!" exclaimed Brooklynn.

They eventually found a room with a workstation humming in sleep mode.

"So to recap, we're trying to find out what dinos are on the island and why they were building a second dinosaur park when they had Jurassic World already," began Brooklynn.

"It's an operating system called Unix. Are you familiar with it?" she continued.

"My specialty is outrunning apex predators Brooklynn," said Yaz, monotone.

"Right," Brooklynn said.

"Let's take a look at this," Brooklynn thought to herself.

"There's no name on the login screen, just TACA?O. That means it's just one password. That's super easy. What's something everyone working here would know?" said Brooklynn.

"Scorpius?" suggested Yaz, in response to Brooklynn's query.

"No dice," replied Brooklynn.

They sat in silence for a few moments.

"Indo-" said Brooklynn.

"-raptor" said Yasmina at the same time.

"That's a kinda weird name. Let's just try that for fun," Brooklynn said, trying to include Yaz in the process.

There was a pause, and the desktop appeared.

"Uhm. It worked," said Brooklynn, in shock.

"I don't know if I'm happy or scared right now," said Yasmina ominously.

Brooklynn navigated through several subsets of folders until she found one named voicemail. A list of about a hundred call entries came up on the window.

"Hmmm. Let's see one from when Jurassic World fell," said Brooklynn, a glint in her eye.

December 20, 2015

Murder central on Nublar today. Sure glad those rich guys finally got what was coming to them. JW-001 was confirmed a KIA. Hahaha. Good thing the guys over here didn't have to put up with that idiot Wu.

"Sounds like a nice guy," commented Yasmina.

"This person definitely didn't like the head honchos, so he probably wasn't a high level worker," deduced Brooklynn.

"What about the most recent call?" asked Yasmina.

June 15, 2016

I'm getting impatient. Dodgson has been micromanaging us too freakin long. Not to mention that other science experiment on Sorna breaking out again. I'm getting off these islands and never getting close to those freaks of nature again. Another Masrani that thinks the monsters can be controlled. The boat leaves at 7. Be there or be square. My replacement arrives on the boat next week.

"If this clock is correct, that was sometime last week. Which means someone is coming," pondered Yasmina.

"It's also weird how this island is deserted. What made them leave last week?"

"Definitely not a good sign. Let's try the second last message," the athlete said.

There was an error noise, and the voicemail played. It was clear that the file had been altered.

June 13 2016

Soon they're gonna be auctioning off old assets once it's too expensive to fix them, just like any other company. I'm sure a lot of them here will be hot commodities. I've already got stock in several companies that are about to gain a lot of research.

"That doesn't sound good either," Yasmina commented.

"Who would sell dinosaurs? How could they even do that?" wondered Brooklynn.

"You guys coming? We wanna get back before dark, let's go on that tour!" said Sammy, calling from the doorway.

"Yeah, we're coming," Brooklynn replied.

"We'll get to the bottom of this, Brooklynn," Yasmina said, placing a hand on the younger girl's shoulder.

Back in the main entrance, the rest of the group conglomerated.

"Wow they have archaeopteryx here!" Darius exclaimed, looking through the species list on the monitor behind the front desk.

"All right, we're all here. LET'S GO!" shouted Kenji, walking toward the main doors with his arms up in celebration.

"Hey Ben, you dropped this," Darius said, handing Ben the lighter he dropped.

"Oh yeah, I found it in the lost and found," Ben explained, in response to Darius' quizzical look.

They approached the two Explorers parked on the track in front of the Visitor's Center. The sun beamed into their eyes, and the humid jungle air descended upon them.

The girls rushed into the first one, saying it was a girl's night, despite the sun shining brightly in the sky. Brooklynn reluctantly trailed behind Sammy and Yasmina.

Darius, Ben and Kenji boarded the second Explorer. Darius sat in the driver's seat with Kenji sitting next to him. Ben stretched out in the back. Darius pressed the continue tour dialog that flashed on the screen as the electric truck quietly whined into forward movement.

The youngest immediately started rattling off dino facts he had found on the center console screen.

"How's the bite, Darius?" asked Ben.

Darius and Kenji slightly grimaced at Ben's choice of words. His tone seemed like he was talking about a mosquito bite, not a T-rex bite.

"They've scabbed over fully. I can finally move around. How are you doing bro?" Darius replied.

"Me? I'm great!" Ben chimed.

"Ben, your wounds are deeper than mine. You gotta take it easy bud," Darius chided.

"Yeah, I guess," Ben said, brushing the younger boy off.

"Well the sooner you guys are okay, the sooner we can start prepping to leave," said Kenji, staring out the window.

"Kenji's right, none of these islands are safe," said Darius.

Back in the other car, Yasmina and Brooklynn caught Sammy up to speed with the call logs.

"Hmmm. The tour should hopefully give us more insight as to what's going on, and where everyone went," surmised Sammy.

"What do you think happened?" asked Yasmina.

"Maybe they ran out of funding, or they're on vacation?" guessed Brooklynn.

"Or they-" began Yasmina, before being cut off by the truck stopping suddenly.

The boys' conversation was also cut off by their truck screeching to a stop. A red button with a T Rex skull on it appeared on the main touch screen. Kenji quickly pressed it.

"Why did you do that?!" asked Darius.

"So we can get a good look at it," said Kenji, his eyes glued to the window to try to spot the occupant of the enclosure.

There was rustling in the bushes right inside the fence. The meat was prepared by robots and presented to the dinosaur. The meat was gone in a large bite. They then hear the sounds of the dinosaur chewing.

It slowly rose to its full height, standing taller than the T-rex. The gigantic theropod was still mostly obscured by the trees.

"Carcharadontosaurus. Say that 10 times fast," Sammy chimed, reading the center infotainment screen.

"It should be illegal to make dino names that long," commented Yasmina.

"It's Carly the carcharadontosaurus," said Brooklynn.

Back in the other truck, the boys began a spirited discussion.

"Toro could totally take this guy," Ben said boastfully.

"Not a chance, she's almost twice her size!" Darius said.

"I'll have you know-" but Ben was cut off by a stricken expression, and opened the door of the Explorer and took off along the track.

Kenji and Darius watched him sprint out of the Explorer in confusion. He disappeared into a bathroom modeled after a straw hut.

"Just where does he think he's going?" said Darius.

"When ya gotta go ya gotta go," surmised Kenji.

Darius laughed in response. Silence fell as they realized how quiet it got with Ben gone.

"So, the Brachiosaurus in the room," Kenji began.

Darius' expression sobered, then looked resolute.

"I don't blame you for going off to rescue Brooklynn. I do blame you for trying to kill me," Darius said, a little venom in his voice.

"I wasn't going to let the snake actually bite you. I just wanted to get back at you for being so careless. Once Yaz turned up, I realized what an idiot I was being. I felt really embarrassed, so I lashed out. I would never have let you die. I'm sorry for hurting you Darius," Kenji said quickly.

Darius was silent for a few moments, turning to face out of the window.

"Thanks for going after Brooklynn. On these islands there are no rules. Anything could have happened to her," Darius said, his voice wavering.

He turned around to find Kenji desperately trying to hide the tears streaming from his face.

"Kenj, don't try to hide it now buddy," said Darius.

He leaned over and hugged his friend.

"Next time, we'll work together," said Kenji, his old spirit restored.

"You got it, buddy," said Darius, clapping his friend on the back.

Yasmina and Sammy chattered about school, while Brooklynn fiddled with the window handle. She looked out toward the other truck. Darius and Kenji were sitting in the two front seats. She watched their tearful faces carefully. "It's a relief that they're working through stuff," Brooklynn thought.

Brooklynn was in the driver's seat, and Yasmina and Sammy had both opted for the back seat. She felt a little left out, and began to flip through slides on the center console to distract herself.

"So Brooklynn, what's he like?" asked Sammy, breaking Brooklynn out of her reverie.

"It's Darius. You've been surviving with him for half a year," said Brooklynn, a little icier that she intended to.

"I know, but you guys-" she put her hand on her mouth "-sleep together," Sammy whispered.

Brooklynn turned bright red, and shouted, "We sleep NEXT to each other!"

Yasmina chuckled.

"So are you like, boyfriend and girlfriend now?" the athlete teased.

Brooklynn crossed her arms and turned away from the two, blushing hard.

The Explorers continued when Ben hopped back in. They passed a few overgrown enclosures that didn't seem to be occupied.

The large, thick fence hummed with electricity.

"No archaeopteryx for Dariusaurus I guess," commented Kenji with a frown.

As they approached the plesiosaur tank, a rancid smell made the campers quickly roll up their windows. There was a set of two tanks in this enclosure, with a plesiosaur in each. They quickly located the source of the smell.

One of the plesiosaurs floated dead in its tank, the side exposed to the air covered in flies. The other weakly rammed the glass in front of the campers.

"Why is this park like this?" said Kenji.

"It's horrible. Everything seems so rudimentary here," Ben added.

"It's almost like beta software. Everything was made to just work," pondered Darius.

"They spared every expense," Ben commented.

Darius looked at the trapped animal with sadness. He wished he could help it. They couldn't move it, or heal its wounds with how sickly it looked.

It was quiet in the girl's truck, upon viewing the plesiosaur tanks.

"Do you guys wanna relax on the beach for a while?" suggested Brooklynn, looking ahead on the tour map.

"I'd like that," said Yasmina, looking like she wanted to open the car door and run.

The trucks turned a corner, and a picturesque beach came into view. The sight was like that first dip into a hot tub after a long day.

"Wow, this beachlooks so pretty. I wish I had my phone to take a picture," said Sammy.

The sunset painted the sky pink and orange.

Brooklynn signaled to Darius to stop their truck.

They all slowly piled out of the trucks. Yasmina and Ben stretched, while Darius, Sammy and Brooklynn walked out to where the water rolled onto the darkened sand.

Kenji emerged from the tailgate of the truck, shutting an ice filled cooler.

'Look what I found guys!" he exclaimed. Kenji held a fistful of half frozen jello cups.

"Kenji, those are alcoholic!" admonished Yasmina.

"They're so small, I just want the jello. Come on, it's been over half a year Ms. Fadoula. Leggo my jello! Leggo my jello!"

Yasmina shrugged in response, finding a log to sit on.

"Guys, we should make a bonfire!" exclaimed Ben.

"Figures the pyromaniac would suggest that," said Darius, throwing an arm over Ben.

They all rushed to find firewood.

Darius and Yasmina arranged the wood, and Ben lit the leaves in the center with his lighter.

The fire warmed them and provided light as the darkness quickly surrounded the island. Kenji and Darius began to march around the fire, singing songs. The effect of the jello was certainly affecting them. In addition, the group seemed adamant on trying to push away thinking of that last enclosure.

Even Yaz got up and was dancing and running around after a while. The group had no particular rhyme or rhythm, just laughing and running. Sammy sat down, silently appreciating how happy her fellow campmate was. Appreciation turned to surprise as Yaz downed two of the jello cups.

Ben sat down from dancing. He had been going as hard as Yasmina, although sans the jello cups. He exhaled and was about to tend to the fire when he realized his wound had opened up again. Blood trailed around his arm from the area. "Damn, gonna need more gauze," he said.

"I'll take ya back buddy," said Kenji.

"Thanks," said Ben, relieved he didn't need to ask anyone to leave the party they spontaneously created.

"Darius, you're in charge. I'm gonna go back with Tarzan over here," announced Kenji.

"Alright, be careful guys," he said. The one cup he had eaten was clearly making him more relaxed, as he normally would have been more concerned with safety.

Ben and Kenji take the first Explorer back, the automatic lights turning on as the vehicle sensed the sunlight waning.

The campfire smell lingered on them, and it filled the vehicle.

"Good thing I'm not actually driving," Kenji chuckled, from the driver's seat.

"Wasn't that fun! I've never seen Yaz look so free," said Kenji, trying to pull Ben out of his reverie.

Ben looked pensive for a second, lost in his thoughts.

"I-I'm afraid of being a softie, a wimp." Ben admitted.

Kenji turned to face him, eyes wide.

"Softie! We got a softie here!" said Kenji, looking around and pointing at Ben.

"See, it doesn't sound so bad when you say it out loud. Some people really appreciate having someone who cares about things, like you," said Kenji.

The center screen was now the only thing illuminating their faces.

"You know-" began Kenji, before being cut off by Ben hugging him. Kenji's expression went from surprise to relief as he softly patted his campmate's back.

"You're okay, Ben. You're okay." Kenji soothed.

Back at the steadily darkening beach, Brooklynn lightly dozed off leaning against Darius. The one jello cup she ate was enough to put her to sleep. Her head rested in Darius' lap as she lay across the birch log next to the fire.

Darius moved long strands of brown hair out of her face as her breath made them flutter. The waves caressing the island, now covered in darkness, soothed the teens. The shells covering the grey sand played a somber tune as the undertow strummed them.

"Hey Dariusaurus. Have you ever heard of an Indoraptor?" asked Yasmina, her eyes reflecting the fire.

"No. What is it?" asked Darius, intrigued.

"I was hoping you knew. It was the password to get into a workstation computer," Yasmina said.

"It doesn't sound friendly. To make the Indominus more like a raptor would be very dangerous. If anything, the Indominus' size was one of its few drawbacks. If they somehow condensed it I-" Darius stopped, the horrific images of what that entailed flashing in his mind. It was enough to sober him up.

Darius pulled Brooklynn closer, and looked behind them at the pitch-black tree line nervously.

Sammy then came back with more firewood, dropping it next to the fire with a clunking sound.

"Make this the last of it guys, I don't plan on camping out here tonight," the Texan stated.

"I'm with you there Sammo," Yasmina said, looking up.

"We also found some call logs. Apparently there's a huge disconnect between the workers and the higher ups. And someone is supposed to be coming to the island in a few days," the athlete continued.

"We should be more careful then. If we're dealing with another adult that is... less than friendly," Sammy said ominously.

Ben and Kenji arrived back at the Visitor's Center. It was so quiet, the only sound was the electricity humming within the walls. They walked back through the halls to the clinic. Kenji sang the opening lines of Baka Mitai as he walked, his voice echoing around the empty building. They got to the clinic, and Ben began to patch himself up in his room.

Kenji was about to follow when he saw yellow flashing lights go off in the hallway.

"Kenji, what do those lights mean?" Ben asked, poking his head out of his room.

Kenji looked as pale as a ghost, silent.

He took off at a sprint. Ben looked confused and tore off after him. "Kenji, what's happening?" Ben yelled behind the older boy. Their sneakers squeaked on the linoleum floors. Kenji threw himself into the chair behind the front desk, and woke the machine from sleep mode.

"I was reading about the park's security this morning. It means that something going faster than forty miles per hour hit a motion sensor. And since the other truck isn't moving, there's only one other thing that could move that fast," Kenji deduced, surveying the security system.

"What is it?" Ben whispered in fear.

"Raptors."

A/N Sorry for the long wait! Where's that S4 trailer at tho? Let me know what you think of this one, and thanks for reading!
