Summary:

Arthur and D.W. race to the ice cream store!

The Read siblings hopped over wet paint to reach the door. They'd been playing a game to help D.W. with her spelling, a job given to Arthur while David was indisposed fulfilling a large order for the Crosswires, and Jane was running numbers their children didn't understand while carrying Kate.

Arthur was watching Bionic Bunny on TV, and D.W. was holding a tea party with Nadine, but they were persuaded to suspend their normal activities and spend time with one another after their parents agreed to pay for ice cream and promised a visit to Grandma Thora's the same weekend.

The object of the game was to see who could make it to the ice cream store first from their house by flipping over flashcards and spelling out the things on the cards, each letter representing a step.

Although Arthur got there before his sister (tying Pal outside), it was a close race. Since D.W. had done the work to improve her vocabulary, however, both scored ice cream despite Arthur winning the game.

"We have some terrific flavours today!" The owner behind the counter pointed at her sign.

D.W. took so long to choose, Arthur was worried her picky eater habits had returned. He might've reinstated a hang-up of his own and started repeating "Dora Winifred!" if she didn't finally pick Shoe Lace!

Arthur picked Toenail Crunch.

"OK! Comin' right up!"

The aardvarks wondered who invented all these creative flavours.

Pizza chip? Moose ripple? Banana slug? You couldn't find that variety at the Sugar Bowl!

D.W.'s cone contained pink stringy bits tied like shoelaces, and Arthur's genuinely looked like it contained toenails for toppings!

Rocky Ratburn during the field trip to Brain's mom's ice cream shop…Yes, Buster would approve.

Any combination of unusual went into the city's ice cream.

That was Elwood City for you!
