Chapter 1. A Big Surprise

Wanda looked at herself sideways in the long oval shaped mirror and pulled her green camisole up to reveal her cocoa colored belly. "Al?", she called to her husband who was watching TV on the bed.

"Yeah Baby?"

"Could you come here please?"

He got off the right side of the bed fifteen feet away.

"What's going on babe?" he asked watching her examine herself in the mirror with her belly exposed.

"I think I have been putting on a little wait or something, my belly feels tighter than normal," she said unbuttoning the top button in jeans.

Al rubbed his hand across her belly as though he were expecting to find something out of the unusual. "Nothing seems different. You look fine, just as beautiful as they day I laid eyes on you," he said with a smile.

"My clothes feel tighter and I haven't changed my diet. I've been going to the gym just like I always do," she said.

"Well is it that time of the month or pretty close?" he asked looking up at her.

"No," she said shaking her head. Out of nowhere a stabbing sharp pain pierce her stomach right above her belly button. "Ahh," she let an agonizing cry before holding her stomach.

"Wanda!" Al exclaimed before catching his collapsing wife.

Wanda let out an earsplitting scream that made Al's blood curdle.

Little Cyan came running into her parents room screaming, "Mommy! What's wrong? Why are you, on the floor?!"

Wanda held her stomach with her face scrunched up in pain.

"We're taking you to the hospital baby. Cy it's all gonna be alright, we're taking mommy to the hospital," Al said before dialing up 911.

The dial for 911 rung out for a few seconds and then the operator said, "911 what's your emergency?"

"I need an ambulance. My wife is having intense stomach pain," he said with an alarmed tone.

"Well have you tried giving her some baking soda with water or seltzer water? Maybe some Pepto Bismol could help?" the female operator suggested.

"This ain't no tummy ache woman! My wife is curled up on the ground screaming bloody murder!"

"Alright sir, no need to get snippy. What's your address so we can send the ambulance."

Al fed the woman their address and then the woman said " Ok. Ambulance will be there in ten minutes."

Al thanked her and then hung up his cellphone.

Cyan was kneeling next to her pain-stricken mother with a frown on her face. "Mommy want me to kiss your tummy. It will make your boo boos feel better like when you kiss mine," the little girl said sweetly.

Wanda opened her mouth to respond but let out a glass shattering scream before saying, "Oh God. I think I'm dying."

"No, you're not baby. You're gonna be alright, the ambulance is coming."

"Please don't die Mommy! I love you," Cyan said crying.

Al began to shush their daughter soothingly then said, "Cy go get Teddy we're all gonna take a trip to the hospital."

Al had Cyan in his arms when the ambulance arrived. He didn't attempt to move his wife for fear that moving her would cause more pain.

The medics hoisted Wanda onto a gurney and began asking her standard questions, but she was too pained to answer fluently.

Al and Cyan came behind the gurney and sat on the benches inside the ambulance.

Cyan began singing "Hush little baby" to Teddy while Al held Wanda's hand.

Al kissed Wanda's forehead and whispered to her, "I love you. We're gonna be alright. Just try to breath for me."

The look in Wanda's eyes showed that she was listening though she was now sweating profusely. Her baby hairs began to curl as the droplets of sweat dripped alongside her head.

The ride to the hospital was quick. Al and Cyan followed after the gurney that carried Wanda to the ER.

As soon as they got Wanda into the room, they put an IV in her arm and then hooked her up to monitors for her heart and blood pressure. Her heartbeat was 120 per minute.

Al considered if Cyan should be in the room seeing her mother getting hooked up to machines. He couldn't leave her out in the waiting room by herself. He would have gone with Cyan but he needed to be there for Wanda.

Wanda was still writing in pain, making it difficult to examine.

Finally, a doctor called out for sedation and a syringe was injected into her right bicep.

Wanda became more still but her chest was still heaving up and down.

The doctor looked at Cyan with her teddy bear in hand and then told him, " You should take her to the playroom we have for children. We're going to examine Wanda now."

Al nodded and then took Cyan by her free hand.

The kindergartener protested by pulling away and saying, " No, I don't want to leave Mommy."

"Come on Honey, let's go to the playroom," He said in a tone that tried to make it sound like an exciting adventure.

"Nooo," the little girl cried out before being picked up by her father and taken out of the room.

The playroom was colorful with paintings of Disney characters all over the walls and toys in plastic bins for children to play with. Al noticed that there was a TV mounted on the wall with a DVD and VCR connected to it. On a counter there was a stack of different Disney Princess movies and old favorites. Al remembered how much Cyan loved the Lion King and popped the VHS in.

Cyan was clutching her teddy bear when he sat down on a small pink chair with her in his lap. Tears had been running down her face, but that stopped the moment she heard "Nants Ingonyama!"

Al softly kissed his daughter's forehead as he watched the movie with her for the hundredth time. They watched the movie until the song "Hakuna Matata", when the doctor came knocking on the door.

"You can come back into the room now, the examination is complete."

Al picked up his daughter and walked back to the emergency room.

In the room Wanda was dressed in a hospital gown with her belly out and glistening with gel.

Al waited until the doctor closed the door to ask, "Ok Doc, what's wrong with my wife?"

Wanda spoke up instead and said, " Al, Baby I'm pregnant."
