It was the best week of Bolt's life. From the moment he woke up , he did so by his Penny, who showered him with love all the time, making sure Bolt didn't feel lonely. He could lie on the couch all day with Mittens and Rhino, he could play with Penny all day, go out for a short walk with her (he was still recovering from the accident) or catch a ball. The dog could probably not have imagined a better week that he had recently experienced. It fulfilled what he wanted most - for everything to be as it used to be. No stress, just to enjoy what he has.

Finally, the day had come. The day of his birthday. Penny did not hide her excitement, and neither did Mittens. The girl had promised the dog that it would be his best birthday ever, which Bolt was very much looking forward to. He was curious about what he would get for his birthday. Maybe it would be a new toy, maybe they would go somewhere they hadn't been together before? The day before his birthday Bolt could only guess. Less excitement was shown by Rhino, who, when asked by Bolt what was going on, refused to answer. He did not want to tire him more, he himself wanted to rest before this special day for him.

When the day of his birthday came, Bolt slept the best he had ever slept in his life. He couldn't remember the last time he had slept so well. He didn't have any nightmares, he slept peacefully which gave him much needed relaxation. When he woke up Penny was not beside him. He had been sleeping next to her on the bed since his arrival from the hospital. He no longer needed to sleep on the floor. Before he got up on his feet, he lay for a while on the comfortable soft bed and looked at the view outside the window - it was going to be a beautiful sunny day. When he got off the bed, he felt that his back paw was almost painless, a good sign that meant that the treatment was working and soon it would not hurt at all. There was an ajar door from the room, Bolt pushing it open with his nose walked out through it to then go downstairs to the kitchen.

"Happy Doggie!" Penny's voice came from the kitchen. She walked over to him and hugged him with all her might immediately when she noticed him. She squeezed him so hard that he couldn't even catch the oxygen in his lungs for a moment! He didn't care, he was enjoying it. Rhino, Mittens and Penny's mum were already at the table, there was already a cake on top, especially for Bolt. Everything was perfectly planned. In fact, it was Bolt's first birthday like this. When his life was limited to the film set, Penny secretly in front of everyone would bring a cupcake for Bolt as a cake on his birthday. The dog had a strict diet and couldn't eat anything sweet.

"Come on Bolt, it's time to blow out the candles on the cake " said Penny after a long hug. She walked together with Bolt to the table and they took their seats.

"Time to think of a wish " said Penny. Bolt concentrated on this, thinking what he wanted most. A new toy ? A new adventure ? With all these thoughts, he wasn't quite sure what he wanted or if he really wanted something. Maybe he should not wish for anything? Eventually, however, Bolt came up with one concrete idea.

"I want to be with Penny all my life," Bolt thought, then blew out the candles. Penny hugged him again , then pulled out a large square package wrapped in paper from under the table.

"Well, I honestly didn't know what to take you, you have so many toys, so I took..." interrupted Penny as she unpacked the contents of the box. Penny had made Bolt a new big black bed! It was really big, at least twice the size of Bolt. The bed already had cushions on which Bolt could lay his head. This cost a little money, but what Penny wouldn't do for Bolt. The dog himself was very pleased with his gift, in fact it was enough for him that his family remembered his birthday, it was the best gesture for him.

"So Bolt, why don't we take a walk in the park?" suggested Penny to which Bolt barked happily accepting Bolt's offer. Penny quickly pulled a better sweatshirt out of the wardrobe , then put it on. She took the leash in her hand, which she then put on Bolt.

"We're going to the park " communicated Penny as she left the house with the dog.

"Then when are you going to tell him ?"

"Tonight...evening..."

The weather was perfect for a walk. The sun gently warmed the ground, the sky was devoid of white spots and the wind gently combed Penny's hair and Bolt's fur. Every now and then the dog tried to quicken his stride, but the girl reminded him that he still needed to recover.

"Relax Bolt, you'll still have time to run out. Let's enjoy this walk, it's been a long time since we walked like this" Penny said stopping in front of the park. There was no one in it. Actually not very surprising, it was early morning and no one wanted to walk at such an early hour. So the girl and her dog walked alone through the alleys of the park admiring the natural wonders found in the park. It was the perfect moment for both of them to quiet their minds from their thoughts. The previous days have taught them that their bond is stronger than it seems and that they cannot live without each other. They give each other positive energy, the energy to live and the will to live. As Penny watched her four-legged friend walking in front of her, she wondered how to reconcile Bolt and Lucas. They were on a break from each other now, but she knew that this break would pass and she would be dating Lucas again. Bolt didn't like him very much, but he had to get over it.

"Bolt wait " said Penny stopping the dog. The man turned towards the girl with a little surprise then stopped.

"You know I have to tell you something " replied Penny kneeling in front of the dog to make eye contact with him.

"You know, you remember Lucas , right?" asked Penny, Bolt nodded affirmatively.

"Well, I told you , I fell in love with him...and I know it's going to be hard for you, but right now I'm on a break with him...in the sense from dating him, but we'll be dating again soon, it's inevitable...you know that. And I know it's going to be hard for you to come to terms with that, I just want you to know that even if he is you will be my dearest boy, I won't make the same mistake a second time" Penny said. Bolt's reaction surprised Penny a little as Bolt smiled and barked as if he was happy.

"Too bad she can't understand me " thought Bolt. He would have told her that he had thought everything over and that he had already accepted it. But this smile was enough. The girl reciprocated the smile and nodded with a movement of her head.

"Let's go on, we have the whole day ahead of us" said Penny, as they moved on.

A few hours later, as it was starting to get dark Penny and Bolt decided to walk home. It was a wonderful, long walk. They had done several miles, but they both enjoyed it. Penny was relieved that she had told for Bolt about her intentions with Lucas, she felt confident that she wouldn't make the same mistake a second time. Once they were home, Penny headed upstairs settling into her room for a while, while Bolt went to the couch lounging on it waiting for the girl to return. He lay like that until he noticed that Mittens and Rhino had disappeared somewhere.

"Where are they?" thought Bolt looking around the living room. They were definitely not in the house, he would have heard their voices. He decided to look for them. He got down from the sofa, then looked around on the ground floor of the house, no one was there. He could only hear Penny looking for something in a cupboard in her room. Having no idea where his friends had gone, he left the house to look for them outside. Immediately he heard a familiar hamster voice pointing to where they were hiding.

"What are you talking about?" asked Bolt approaching them who were hidden behind the side wall of the house. There was confusion on Rhino's face and calm on Cat's face.

"Well...I...ekhm...I'll go" howled Rhino in embarrassment walking towards the door of the houses. Bolt was surprised by this but didn't speak waiting for Mittens to say something.

"I have to tell you something" sighed the cat also walking towards the door. Bolt followed her curiously listening to what she had to tell him. They both sat down in front of the door on the stairs.

"Well...remember when we went to Hollywood, I said that kind of life doesn't turn me on?" asked Mittens. Bolt nodded affirmatively .

"I feel the time has come " completed her thought Mittens.

"Time for what?" asked Bolt, to which Mittens sighed heavily.

"The time has come , to leave " sighed Mittens , which surprised Bolt . To leave here ? But why ? She had never complained about living badly here. So why does she want to leave ?

"B...but why ? Something happened ?" asked Bolt surprised.

"No...but I just don't live the way I want to...When I'm a roofie I go where I want to go and live the way I want to live...I have nothing against you or Rhino or Penny, I just know it will be the right decision for me " explained Mittens.

"Have you thought about it ? Are you sure you want to do this ?" asked Bolt.

"Yes...I'm sure" replied Mittens. They didn't speak to each other for a while. It was a hard conversation for both of them. It is not so easy to part with your friend. They needed a break for a while.

"And do you at least know where you will go ? Because you know, the door for you will always be open " replied Penny at which Mittens gave out a modest laugh.

"I'll be fine, easy. It's not my first time "

"Well, yeah ..." replied Bolt.

"Well...then I'll see you...someday..." sighed Mittens then got up from her seat and moved ahead.

"Goodbye..." replied Bolt as he watched Mittens walk away into the darkness. He was worried about how she would cope, but he trusted her to do it. It pained him that she left, but it was her choice.

"Oh, there you are Bolt! Come on, let's watch something together!" a girl's voice came from the living room. Bolt stared for a moment more at the place where Mittens had gone. He still couldn't get over the fact that Mittens had left, but he knew that it was her choice...everyone is the smith of their own fate...

The End

I would like to thank everyone who read the whole story! I'm glad I was able to write this story, I enjoyed writing each chapter and I'm a little sad that this is the end of the story. I will most likely write a new FF about Bolt in the future, in the meantime I invite you to my profile and to my other stories.
