Transitioning to happiness

"Serah? Can we talk?"

Serah looked up at the young man stood in her bedroom doorway. He had a dishevelled appearance which was unknown of the soldier, his Guardian Corps uniform wrinkled and dirty from the training that day. An unknown emotion ran through his own crystalline blue eyes, something the younger Farron could only recognise as an inner war going on within himself.

"Sure Blaire. Is everything ok?" She stood from the chair at her desk and gently coaxed him by the arm to sit on her bed. "You can tell me anything. You know that right?" The older Farron searched his sisters eyes and stayed silent for a time, trying to gauge if what he was about to tell his sister would be accepted by the girl.

Blaire spoke in a semi quiet voice, breaking the silence in the room. "Do you ever feel like sometimes you feel...different to everyone else?" His hand running through his shoulder length hair, pushing it out of his eyes. He continued. "Like the 'you' others see isn't who you truly are."

Serah stayed silent, giving Blaire the chance to tell everything that was bothering him. 'Since when did Blaire grow his hair out?' It was very rare that he spoke about his feelings, so she gave her brothers hand a slight squeeze, a voiceless communication for the him to continue.

"Do you remember when Lebreau and I were talking before you both went out on your 'girlie evening'?" Blaire turned his gaze away from his sister, the memory still fresh in his head even after all that time had past.

The younger Farron thought back to that evening. "Yeah I do." The older Farron turned his gaze to his sister as she spoke, subconsciously wringing his hands together. "I remember Lebreau mentioning something along the lines of 'You're a really cute guy but you'd make a beautiful woman. ' What brought this up?"

Blaire silently turned to look his sister in the eyes, a non-verbal communication willing her, pleading with her to put two and two together. His throat felt so tight, his heart beat against his chest, his body's fight or flight response went into overdrive but he sat, not wanting to run and hide like so many times before. How many times had Blaire laid awake at night, trying to make sense of the thoughts that spiralled around in his mind and nearly driving himself to insanity.

It felt like an eternity had passed, neither sibling spoke a word. That was until the realisation hit Serah. "Wait...Blaire? Are you...are you trying to tell me you feel like you were born in the wrong body?"

A tear fell from the young man's eyes, then another, until he was crying into Serah's shoulder. The truth was finally out, but what would Serah think? What would they say at work? That was something that would have to wait for another time. "Please don't hate me Serah. I..I'm scared and I can't lose you. You're the only family I have left."

The way Blaire held onto Serah, not loosening his grip on the girl for fear he may be washed away in a sea of doubt without a lifeline. The younger Farron's heart broke for her brother. He had always been a pillar of strength for them after their parents untimely passing. Blaire had taken the opportunity to join the Guardian Corps as soon as he reached the age of recruitment. He had sacrificed so much to take care of her and to keep their home.

Now Serah needed to stand by her brother, to help him realise who he truly is. To finally feel happy with who he is. "Blaire, I could never hate you. You are the best brother anyone could ask for." Serah gently pulled her older siblings head away from where it was hidden in her shoulder. "If you want to live your life as a woman, my sister, then who am I to deny your happiness."

'Well, that went better than I expected.' In all honestly Blaire thought that there would be shouting. Maybe some tears. Heck, some alone time to process the information that she had been told. But looking in Serah's eyes, he saw nothing but love and affection for him. "I'm so sorry I didn't tell you sooner Serah. I was so scared that you wouldn't want anything to do with me any more after you found out I was-"

"Blaire you're rambling." The siblings couldn't hold in their laughter. "You know that you can always talk to me about anything." The siblings spent hours talking. There were questions that needed answering which were answered with honesty and no words were sugar coated.

A silence fell upon the rooms occupants, only to be broken by the older Farron "Claire."

"Hmm? What was that?" Serah had a puzzled look on her face who had partially zoned out.

Blaire straightened his shoulders and repeated with a more confident tone. "I want to be called Claire."
