Coast to Coast

The Hummel Anderson clan were on the move. They were going to stay in their New York apartment until Congress recessed for the summer in a week, and then head to Miami for David's wedding before flying to LA to film Somewhere, Ohio, with a brief detour to San Francisco in July for Wes' sister's wedding.

Before they left Lima, they made sure to check in on Belinda and her family, who would be taking care of Chester and Charlie for them while they were gone.

Belinda was a little sad that Bee would be gone for so long, but he promised her he would skype with her everyday, and she had Chester with her to keep her company. And Dr. Andrews was going to let her go home for a week at the end of the summer when Bee returned, and they were going to camp out in the Hummel Anderson backyard, and attend Dave and Edward's wedding.

They arrived in New York the day after Memorial Day, and got settled into the Manhattan apartment quickly. Burt and Carole were also in New York, staying at the Marriott just up the street. They met up for dinner that evening, then had an early night.

Wednesday morning, Blaine got the kids ready for a day in the park with grandma and grandpa. They spent the morning walking around Central Park Zoo where Bee excitedly pointed out all the cool animals to his younger siblings and aunt, then had a picnic near the lake. After letting the kids run around the playground for a bit, they went to the Manhattan Children's museum, and ended the day with Pizza at Bee's favorite pizzeria.

Kurt took the train up from DC that evening, and spent a couple hours with the kids before helping to tuck them all in. He had to leave again early the next morning, but he would return Friday night.

Thursday, Burt and Carole took the younger children to the library for story time, while Lizzie spent some time with her old friends, and Blaine took Bee to the cemetery to put flowers on his friend's grave. Later that afternoon, Blaine, Lizzie, and Bee went to a concert in the park, and then met back up with the others for dinner at Serendipity. Lizzie squealed when she spotted Amy Adams across the restaurant. The red headed actress was happy to sign an autograph for the girl, and then asked Blaine for his autograph. Blaine laughed and signed it for her.

"I saw you opening night for Somewhere, Ohio," she said. "I also saw you and your husband in Dear Evan Hanson. I was so happy when he got elected. Please tell him congratulations from me."

Blaine smiled. "Thank you, and I'm sure Kurt would thank you as well. He's such a big fan of yours."

She smiled, and said goodnight.

Friday, Blaine and the kids just chilled around the apartment all morning, before heading out to a splash park in the afternoon. They returned to the apartment a couple hours later, and were surprised to find Kurt already there.

"We weren't expecting you until dinner time!" Blaine said, kissing his cheek.

"We recessed at lunch time, having finished everything on the agenda early." Kurt hugged each of the kids. "The Unspeakable tried to stall the vote on the infrastructure bill, but her fellow GOP lackeys were getting restless as well, and told her to put a sock in it."

The Unspeakable was Kurt's nickname for the representative from Texas, who somehow got elected, despite barely surviving the GOP purge of conspiracy theorists back in 2028. It had nearly destroyed the party in the wake of trumpism, which had given the democrats the upper hand for a few years at least, but now they were making a comeback after cleansing their rolls.

The Unspeakable was Caitlyn Jackson, a homophobic, xenophobic, racist who still believed the orange baboon won the 2020 election, and that the democrats cheated.

Blaine smiled sympathetically at him. "Well, at least you'll have a little time to relax before the show tonight."

"True. Is Miss Maggie babysitting?" he asked, referring to the neighbor down the hall. Miss Maggie was a drag queen who had once made a name for herself in Kinky Boots on Broadway, and a few other very successful shows. Now she owned her own nightclub and had a weekly podcast.

"Yes, along with her husband. Burt and Carole will be leaving Amelia with them, too."

Lizzie helped Blaine get the little ones cleaned up while Kurt and Bee made dinner for them all. After they ate, Kurt, Blaine, Lizzie and Bee got ready to go out. Burt and Carole arrived just after seven, and after leaving the five youngest with the sitters, headed for Broadway.

They bypassed the line of theater goers waiting to get in, and were shown in through a side door, and headed backstage, where they surprised the current cast of Somewhere, Ohio. It was closing night on the show, and Kurt and Blaine shook everyone's hand, thanking them for all their hard work, and wishing them well in their future endeavors. A few of them would be in the film adaptation, and were excited to be working with Blaine again.

They wished them all good luck, and took their seats in the private box that had been reserved for them.

Neither Lizzie or Bee had seen the show live before, and were immediately drawn into the story of how their Daddy had met their Dad. They sang along to their favorite songs, Loser Like Me and Shine From the Shadows. When the show was over, there was an extended standing ovation as the cast was acknowledged, and the orchestra. And then a spotlight was focused on Kurt and Blaine, and the cheers redoubled as they stood and bowed and waved, blowing kisses to the cast. An usher appeared, and presented each of them a bouquet of yellow and red roses.

As the cheers began to settle down, Billy Daily, who had taken over the role of Kris from Johnny the previous year, stepped forward.

"Thank you! It has been my honor and privilege to lead this cast for the past year, and I couldn't have had a better crew of people to work with, unless of course it was the original Kris, John Grier, and the amazing Blaine Anderson!"

There were more cheers from the crowd, and Blaine blushed and blew Billy a kiss. The Boy continued his speech. "And speaking of amazing, I want to thank Kyle Greene, who played my wonderful boyfriend, Blaise on the show," he indicated the dark haired boy beside him. They hugged and kissed each other on the cheek. He then introduced the actor who played Kris' father in the show. The actor got a laugh when he pointed out that Burt was way better looking in a suit than him.

Billy introduced the rest of the cast, making sure everyone knew which ones would be appearing in the movie, and who would be joining the touring cast starting in the fall. He then introduced Denise Gilman, the director.

"Thank you all again! It has been truly a blessing to work with each and everyone of you on this labor of love. I especially want to thank my predecessor, who not only directed the original cast, but wrote and produced this incredible story, Mr. Kurt Hummel. Thank you so much for sharing your story with us!"

Kurt stood and bowed again. After the speeches and final bows, they joined the cast backstage for a celebration.

Saturday morning, the entire family toured the UN, and had lunch at Sardi's. They spent the rest of the afternoon packing and cleaning the apartment, in preparation for their departure the next day. They had brunch with Burt and Carole the next morning, before saying their goodbyes at the airport. The older couple would be flying to Indiana to spend a week with Carole's sister and her family, before heading back to Lima.

Kurt and Blaine and their brood got settled on their flight to Miami, with Kurt, Blaine, Lizzie and Bee all taking charge of one of the quads. Bee had Phin in his lap, sitting beside Kurt, who held Kathy. Across the aisle, Blaine held Mattie while trying to help Lizzie, who was struggling to get her seatbelt on with a squirming Audy in her lap.

One of the flight attendants approached them. "I'm sorry, but she can't have the child in her lap if she can't fasten her seatbelt. Where is her mother?"

Kurt frowned from across the aisle. "We're her parents."

The woman frowned at him, looking at the rest of the children. "Well, maybe you shouldn't have had so many children. Or any at all, considering."

"Excuse me?" Kurt demanded.

"You people are making a mockery out of family values! And now you are overpopulating the world with your heathen offspring!"

Kurt unfastened his seatbelt and stood up. "Do you know who I am?"

She glared at him. "You're that abomination that got himself elected by framing your opponent for evil deeds you yourself are guilty of!"

Kurt flagged down another flight attendant who was closing the overhead bins behind them. "I demand to speak with the captain."

The woman glanced from him to her coworker. "Is there a problem?"

Before Kurt could answer, the rude woman cut in. "These people refuse to fasten their seatbelts, and are threatening me."

"She's lying," Blaine said, and was echoed by a few other passengers who had overheard the exchange.

The other woman glanced at the other passengers, and then back at Kurt. "What happened?"

Kurt didn't take his eyes from the first woman. "My husband was trying to help our daughter fasten her seat belt, because her little sister was squirming and made it difficult. This woman came along and said Lizzie couldn't hold Audy on her lap if she couldn't fasten her seatbelt, and then demanded to know where their mother was. When I informed her that we were their parents, she implied that we shouldn't be allowed to have kids."

The second flight attendant sighed, "I'll talk to the captain. Diane, would you please wait in the galley?"

The first woman, who was apparently named Diane, walked away in a huff. The second woman turned back to Kurt. "I apologize, sir. If you'll just take your seat, I'll get the captain."

"Thank you," Kurt said, sitting back down. The woman smiled at him and moved towards the cabin. She returned a few minutes later with an older man, who introduced himself as Captain JR Berman. After Kurt explained what had happened, and the captain spoke to the other passengers, a furious Diane was escorted from the plane. Neither Kurt or Blaine had repeated the woman's exact words, but some of the other passengers had told the captain exactly what had been said.

"This isn't Diane's first infraction in regards to stating her beliefs about the LGBTQ+," the second flight attendant, who introduced herself as Patricia, said. "She's received two warnings already. Hopefully this time they will do more than suspend her for a week." She glanced at Blaine. "Are you related to Lisa Anderson?"

Blaine smiled. "She's my sister in law."

Patricia laughed. "She's mentioned you before. We usually work the LA to Chicago flight on Thursdays and Fridays."

Blaine laughed as well. "Wait, are you the Patricia who once knocked a drunk passenger on his ass when he tried to grope her?"

"That would be me. I need to finish the preflight now, but if you need anything, just let me know. And tell Lisa to hurry up and have that baby and get back to work! Diane isn't the only problem I've had to deal with without her!"

Blaine got Lizzie and Audy settled and the seatbelt fastened, while Kurt resettled Kathy on his lap and refastened his seatbelt. As the plane began to taxi towards the runway, the woman in the seat in front of Kurt turned and looked around her seat.

"I'm sorry you gentlemen had to deal with that. You have a lovely family, and your son is so very polite. He helped me with my bag when I was struggling to put it on the conveyor belt at security. If only everyone taught their children such manners!"

Both Kurt and Blaine smiled at her. "Thank you," Blaine said. "Our mothers would kill us if we hadn't raised them properly."

The woman laughed and turned back around in her seat. The rest of the flight was pleasant, and they chatted with the kind woman in front of Kurt, who was on her way to see her new great grandchild, and a couple of the other passengers who recognized either Kurt or Blaine.

They landed in Miami thirty minutes late, partly due to the altercation before they took off, but also because of a minor diversion due to weather. When they reached baggage claim, they were greeted by David, Wes, Thad, Trent, Beatz, and several other former Warblers who had flown in for the wedding.

"Where are Nick and Jeff?" Kurt asked. "And Annie?"

"Their flight got delayed," David said. "Mechanical difficulties or something. They'll be in later tonight."

"And Annie is back at the hotel. She wasn't feeling well on the flight. We called Kat, who said she should lay down and try to get some sleep."

"I hope everything is okay with the baby," Blaine said.

Wes shrugged. "Her OB/GYN examined her just a couple of days ago, and everything was looking fine. Annie said she had morning sickness well into her second trimester with Johnny, and she's pretty sure that's all it is now."

They headed to the hotel to get checked in, and settled the little ones in for a nap. Later that night, once Nick and Jeff arrived with baby Abby, they all met in the hotel restaurant for dinner. Kurt told them about the incident on the flight earlier.

"That's messed up," Nick said, as he fed his daughter a bottle. "We got really lucky, our flight attendants all made a fuss over Abby, and kept stopping by to check on her. They were really sweet about it."

Jeff laughed. "Except the one who kept trying to hit on both of us, although she was still nice about it when we turned her down."

The next day was the rehearsal and rehearsal dinner, followed by David's bachelor party, which was rather interesting, since they decided to have it in one of the Cuban night clubs known for its drag shows. They all had a great time, and only got a little drunk.

The wedding the next day was beautiful, as all the former Warblers sang Josie down the aisle with Run To You, from the Flash Musical episode. It was her favorite song.

The next day, the Hummel Andersons were on the move again. This time their flight went without a hitch, other than Phin spilling juice in Kurt's lap. They were met in baggage claim by Cooper and Lisa.

"Aren't you supposed to be on bed rest?" Kurt asked, hugging his sister in law.

"I got bored," she replied. "I was going stir crazy with nothing to do!"

"Where's Katie?" Blaine asked.

"Grandma Gale is watching her. They're both excited to see you again."

They were still waiting for their luggage to be unloaded, and it seemed to be taking longer than usual.

"So," Cooper said. "We've decided on a name for the baby, but I wanted to run it by you first, Squirt."

Blaine looked intrigued. "Oh?"

"We want to name him Richard Blaine Anderson."

At first Blaine couldn't speak as he felt a lump form in his throat. "I think that is a great name."

The conveyor belt suddenly began moving as the luggage was finally off loaded. Kurt had spotted the kids' car seats coming towards them. He had just grabbed the first one when he heard Lisa let out a little grunt.

"What's wrong, sweetheart?" Cooper asked.

Lisa looked a little chagrined. "My water just broke."
