The Cradle Broken

Above me realm of empty space,

Darkness punctured by starlight.

Below me orb of greens and browns,

Of blue seas and clouds white.

An orb that's slowly, surely dying,

While we reach out to the black.

Leaving cradle world behind,

And never looking back.

Colonies on Luna, Mars,

Where people live and love, give birth.

Far removed from source of life,

Give no thanks to Mother Earth.

Ice caps melt, the deserts spread,

Insane has gone the weather.

Some people offer platitudes,

That one day, things will better.

Know we're alone in universe,

That there's no life beyond Sol.

But as we boldly chase the stars,

On Earth, it takes its toll.

Perhaps these words of hypocrite,

In suit breathe recycled air.

I guess the stars, they offer hope,

While Earth gives only despair.

Can't stay in cradle forever,

Those words long ago were spoke.

But here, above a dying world,

Know cradle's long been broke.
