Yvette stepped out of the dwelling where she had spent her first night with Quasimodo in the Court of Miracles. She was embarrassed and wanted to talk to Esmeralda.

"Good morning, Yvette." It was Clopin who was just leaving for the city for the day. Yvette smiled at him at first, but then she turned away because she didn't want Clopin to know what had happened between her and the bellringer. Besides, Clopin looked at her in a way that made her quiver. She hastened at Esmeralda's dwelling.

The Gypsy girl smiled mysteriously when seeing her friend. Yvette put her arms round her, whispering: "Last night, Quasi and I made love for the first time!"

Esmeralda laughed a bit. "I guessed that! What was it like? How did you feel afterwards?"

Yvette flushed. "He was tender…And I hadn't even realised how strong he was before he caressed me that way. It felt good but a little odd…By the way, it was he who suggested for that."

Esmeralda patted her on the shoulder. "Yes, I know Quasi is strong indeed – he held me in his arms on the balcony of Notre Dame when Frollo was threatening us. I felt completely safe as long as he was holding me. You can be absolutely sure you don't need to be scared of anything with him."

Yvette shuddered. If her beloved Quasimodo hadn't rescued Esmeralda she would have been burned! And yet, despite owing him her life, Esmeralda hadn't fallen in love with him, so Quasi had given his love to her, Yvette. She smiled triumphantly, but then she said: "He did not frighten me, it's just that this morning, he took me in his arms in such a lustful way I felt confused and wasn't sure I wanted to… But what was your first time like?"

Esmeralda found it impossible Yvette would resist Quasimodo caressing her. However, she said nothing about the topic but remarked shyly: "I made a chastity vow, so I am still inexperienced."

"Really?" Yvette exclaimed. "What does Phoebus think about that? After all, he is a soldier and several years older than you."

"For now, he accepts and understands my wish", said the Gypsy girl, "for it's not that I wouldn't like to be with him, I do have an actual reason for preserving my virginity."

For a little while, Yvette was going to tell her friend Clopin's behaviour made her restless. After thinking carefully she decided not to tell. It was possible Esmeralda wouldn't even believe her, and if Clopin's thoughts were indeed what she was afraid they were, it would be wrong to remind the Gypsy girl of her painful experiences.

The girls left the hideout. Quasimodo walked toward them in the Cathedral square. Yvette gave him a sparkling smile, but she was unintentionally startled when the bellringer folded her in his arms and, again, she felt his passion and strength. Quasi let his hands wander all over her back, buttocks and thighs, indifferent about anyone seeing them.

Phoebus was just on the move with a small patrol of guards. When seeing Esmeralda and the lovers he left the soldiers and came to greet those three. He tapped Quasi on the shoulder. "Well, it seems like you two are having a good time!" he grimaced. Yvette glanced at him over Quasi's shoulder in confusion.

Clopin saw them as well. His caravan stood near the Palace of Justice. He understood, seeing Quasimodo embrace his future wife in such agitation, that Yvette had given in to him. Clopin was agitated by the thought. He imagined the young woman with her shoulders revealed and how he would kiss and snap her breasts if he was allowed to touch her. He didn't remember at all that Yvette always behaved in a very modest way in his company.

Quasimodo and Yvette retired in the small house beside Notre Dame where the bellringer lived. They had a plan to found a workshop for handiwork after getting married, and Quasimodo thought his sweetheart was going to talk about that. Instead, she sat down opposite to him, gave her hand to him and asked seriously:

"Quasi, what's the matter with you? Why do you embrace me so lustfully? I thought you knew hardly anything about what's between men and women, but now it seems to me you are not interested in anything but that!"

The young man blushed. "Yvette, my love, I didn't mean to frighten you", he assured. "It's just that after we did that for the first time it has felt like something would be burning inside me…I really didn't think being with you would have this kind of an effect on me."

Yvette smiled both gladly and a bit in embarrassment. She put her arms round Quasi. "Burning? I am really flattered", she said, "but…I think Clopin does also have such thoughts about me – he stares at me in so passionate a way I'm quite sure he would like to do something to me." Quasimodo looked so shocked that she added, quickly: "Of course I know I am flattering myself – it's not even possible I would be aspired after by several men the way Esmeralda was."

The bellringer drew her against himself. "My love, don't say that! I am conviced that some other men do find you attractive as well. But no-one but me has any right to 'do anything to you'. Before I suggested for us to spend a night together I had a word with Phoebus, and he assured this to me."

The next days, Yvette thought about her beloved and Clopin. In the nights, she and Quasimodo made love passionately, but after that, Yvette often imagined – although she dared not confess that even to herself – what it would be like if Clopin showed her the passion she saw in his eyes. She was enormously ashamed, cried and prayed for forgiveness. Her love for Quasi was deep and indisputable, but Clopin was undeniably attractive. At least, Yvette knew she wouldn't be disgusted like Esmeralda had been by her harasser if the Gypsy leader wanted to express his feelings to her.

One morning then, Clopin walked toward Yvette on her way to the house where she and Quasi were going to keep their workshop. The girl quivered unintentionally and was going to step aside at first, but then she happened to think it would be best for them both if she even tried to talk frankly about the thing that was bothering her. Besides, it was possible she was mistaken about what the man felt for her – and if that was the case, it was out of the question she could ever let Clopin find out what she had thought.

"Hello, girlie, how have you been?" smiled Clopin. Then he put his hand on Yvette's shoulder and smoothed it down almost inconspicuously. Yvette got restless, but she understood she couldn't let Clopin notice his touch had any effect on her. Before she could solve what to say, the Gypsy man bowed down and said in a low voice: "Girlie, there is something I need to tell you. Come to my caravan tonight, so we can talk by ourselves."

It's true! thought Yvette. She shuddered and glanced quickly at Clopin. The temptation was strong: She would have liked to promise she would come, but she was sure she wouldn't be safe alone with the Gypsy leader.

"Clopin", she said hesitatingly, "I think I know what you want to talk about. I can come to meet you, but you must understand I am faithful to Quasimodo."

Clopin turned away for a moment. He was ashamed. Then, however, he lightly touched Yvette's bosom. The young woman looked at him in confusion, before she drew back.

Phoebus was near this time as well. He observed Clopin and Yvette without them noticing him. Ever since Yvette had visited the Court of Miracles for the first time, the Captain had suspected Clopin had a crush on her. The day Quasimodo had passionately embraced Yvette on the Cathedral square and Phoebus had seen Clopin's agitated gaze, he had realised Yvette was an object of lust for both of the men. Esmeralda had talked quite a lot about Frollo's illicit intentions to her beloved, and Yvette had been appalled when hearing about them. Now, it seemed to Phoebus the girl did not completely understand how serious the situation might become. So, he followed Yvette to the workshop house and asked: "Could I please have a word with you?"

His friend smiled in embarrassment. She was still restless because Clopin had made advances to her. She was also afraid that Quasi would find out she had promised to meet Clopin – although she was most certainly going to make it clear to him any kind of an illicit affair would be out of the question. She looked at Phoebus in an inquiring manner.

"Yvette, I want to warn you", said the Captain, "I've seen how Clopin looks at you, and I noticed a while ago you let him touch your bosom. You are not the first young woman he is interested in, and he doesn't necessarily respect you and Quasi's love for each other."

"Quasi does also lust after me", noted Yvette, "he admitted that to me. At first, I was anxious when realising Clopin's desire, but at times, I've even been a bit fascinated by being aspired after in a similar way as Esmeralda."

"Listen to me, Yvette", said Phoebus seriously, "Quasi's passion for you is an entirely different matter than Frollo's obsession for Esmeralda. No matter how lustful Quasi may be, he does love and respect you and would never hurt you. It's dreadful to become the object of such lust that HE had for Esme – actually, according to Frollo, Esme didn't even have the right to exist for any other purpose than to satisfy his desires. Don't forget he really did order her to choose between giving in to him or dying! Thank goodness Quasi rescued her from the pyre, but you must never wish you would experience anything like what happened to Esmeralda."

Yvette was quiet for a while. "I know this is a serious matter. That's why I agreed to go to meet Clopin in the evening. I know it's risky, but I really do want to know what he wants of me, and also what he'll say and do if I refuse – and I'm definitely going to do that if his intentions are indeed like Frollo's."

"You must understand the two of you can't possibly meet by yourselves", Phoebus exclaimed. "Firstly, you are engaged to Quasimodo, secondly, I am afraid Clopin might even try forcing himself on you if you really were alone with him in his dwelling!"

Yvette deliberated carefully. She wanted to know the truth about Clopin's intentions, and it was even possible she would let him caress her a little. Yet, the Captain was right – she could in no case meet the Gypsy leader alone. Whom could she ask to come with her? She couldn't tell Esmeralda Clopin had illicit wishes about her, and besides, Esmeralda and Clopin weren't allowed to talk about love affairs together. If she went with Phoebus the Gypsy man maybe wouldn't dare to talk frankly, and Yvette did want to know. What about Quasimodo? It would offend him deeply to find out his sweetheart even thought of any other man, but she did want to be honest to him – at least to let him know it was true Clopin was interested in her.

She said to Phoebus: "Thank you for taking care of my safety. I definitely won't meet him alone behind a closed door. Now, you must promise this will remain between ourselves."

Later that day, Clopin joined Yvette on her way back to the Court of Miracles. The young woman was alarmed; this was the situation Phoebus had warned her about! Clopin might do anything to her down in the catacombs!

The Gypsy man grimaced, drew Yvette against himself, caressed her neck, removed her dress from her shoulder and smoothed it down. "Girlie, I have wanted to sleep with you for a long time already", he confessed, bowed down and kissed the girl eagerly on the neck. Yvette tried to detach herself from his embrace, but he crushed her passionately. "Clopin, I am flattered by you having a desire for me, but I love Quasimodo and am going to marry him after less than two months",.the young woman said as peacefully as she could."I was just going to suggest that you would come to visit us at Quasi's home in the city tomorrow, so we all could talk about this dilemma."

Clopin let go of her. He was surprised at her suggestion that was against the Gypsy customs. After deliberating a little he understood it would seem less doubtful if he visited the lovers than if the vagabond community, let alone the townspeople saw him and Yvette in each other's company. He did also realise the bellringer would get upset. He put his arms round Yvette from behind and said, fingering at her breasts: "All right, girlie, I'll come tomorrow. Don't forget I've decided to make you give in some time."

They arrived at the Court, and Yvette hastened to her and Quasi's dwelling. She was anxious, and when the bellringer took her in his arms, she pressed her head to his chest, without saying anything. Quasimodo started to caress her, but when he revealed Yvette's shoulder she drew back. "What is it, my love?" the young man asked.

"It's late, we should sleep", Yvette said, sat on the bed and started to undress herself. Quasimodo came by her side and helped her to open her clothes, but Yvette didn't respond to his caresses. She lay down, and the bellringer put his arms round her. "My dear, is something wrong?" he asked. smoothing down Yvette's hair. She touched his cheek. "Quasi, Clopin is coming to visit us in the city tomorrow in the afternoon", she said, "we need to talk about serious things."

Quasimodo raised up to look hard in her eyes. "Yvette, have you been meeting him alone? I don't trust him after you told me he doesn't act in a decent way in your company."

"No, I haven't met him by ourselves, except on the journey here tonight", assured Yvette. "Something is bothering him, and I think it's best if he tells it to both of us."

Next afternoon, the Gypsy leader arrived for a visit. He smiled mischievously when seeing Yvette at the door, and immediately after greeting her he smoothed down Yvette's shoulder and let his hand wander on her neck. Fortunately, he detached his hold before Quasi stepped inside the room. In alarm, Yvette went to him, and all of them sat down.

The bellringer started the conversation: "Yvette told me you wanted to talk about something serious. Both of us have paid attention to that something has been bothering you after we eloped in the Court. That's why we invited you here."

Clopin's feelings were contradictory. He looked at Yvette, trying to hide his thoughts about wanting to slowly undress and take her. He had indeed been thinking about the possibility to force himself on her – he didn't remember at all that even Frollo hadn't done that to Esmeralda. On the other hand, he had a feeling that Yvette enjoyed his forbidden caresses. He turned to Quasimodo and realised, to his surprise, that the bellringer stared at his sweetheart with a lustful gaze as well. True, Clopin had a few times seen Quasi embrace Yvette at a public place, but only in this situation did he understand the bellringer had as physical a desire for the young woman as he had. Under these circumstances, it would have been ridiculous to refer to the Gypsy customs that forbade young and elderly people even to talk together about erotic affairs. So, Clopin said, smiling seductively at Yvette: "Come here, girlie." He was going to sit her on his lap and caress her.

"No, I won't", answered Yvette determinedly. "Tell us honestly what's on your mind."

Clopin deliberated for a while. He had only one choice, to talk frankly, ashamed as he was.

"Quasi, I have a desire for Yvette", he said, without daring to look at either of the lovers. "I admitted to her I want to seduce her." He lowered his head, but then he glanced at Yvette.

Quasimodo felt cold, shuddered and whispered: "No – no – I can't believe this!" He squeezed Yvette hard from the shoulders. "What did you say to him when he told that to you? Hide nothing from me!"

Yvette was near starting to cry. "I said I was flattered about being aspired after like Esmeralda, but I love no other man but you and am going to marry you soon. I asked him to come to meet us. He agreed, but he also held me and fingered at my bosom. Before that, he had already kissed me on the neck and crushed me to himself." She shuddered, for it felt awful to confess this to Quasi, and she was depressed by the thought Clopin's touches had been somehow enjoyable.

It took long until the bellringer was able to speak. He exclaimed at Clopin: "Yvette is mine, and don't you understand no-one but she has ever loved me? You don't LOVE her, you want only your own pleasure! True, I do have a passion for her as well, now that I've experienced what erotic love means, but I do truly love her and she knows it."

"She also knows what my feelings are like", remarked Clopin, "I've been completely honest to her." He thought about men who lied and babbled to women about being in love with them when their only intention was to sleep with them. He hadn't even imagined doing that to Yvette. Both of them knew whose passion had been like his feeling was now.

Yvette was thinking of exactly the same as he was. She turned pale and quivered, and Quasi put his arm round her. Yvette pressed her head to his chest, but she was bound to talk to the Gypsy man.

"Clopin, I must ask you something", she said, walked to him and stopped by the side of him. "If I refused to agree to your wishes, is it absolutely sure you would never ever give me an ultimate choice, such as HE gave to Esmeralda? Remember it was you who told me HE had those illicit intentions."

The bellringer exclaimed: "Yvette, how can you even imagine any other possibility but to refuse?" Clopin, in turn, put his arms round Yvette's waist, saying: "Yes, girlie, that's certain. I do want to sleep with you – " He drew her closer and added, whispering: " – and that is going to happen one day." He continued aloud: "But I promise you never will need to fear for your life!"

Yvette returned to sit by Quasimodo who looked at her in a sad and serious manner. "My love", said he, holding the girl's hand, "if this is all about you dreaming of being demanded to do anything a lover desires, it is I and nobody else whom you should think of in that way."

Yvette gave him the peculiar smile he always saw on her face when she joked about Frollo. But then, she said without hesitation: "Firstly, Quasi, you are not a demanding lover, strong as you are. Secondly, I did not ask Clopin to plan seducing me. He is attractive in his own way, but I hope he understands he can't entice me to be unfaithful to you."

Clopin was touched by the lovers' affection to each other, but he knew he couldn't give up his passion. He did not care about his job or about watching over the vagabond community until he would be allowed to do what he wanted with Yvette. He couldn't say that to the couple, so he approached them and started to smooth down Yvette's shoulders. Quasimodo snapped: "Leave her alone!" Yvette was more confused than ever in her life. Secretly she wanted both of the men to caress her, but it was sinful even to think about such a possibility. If she refused now, Clopin would most certainly wait for a suitable moment to take her. If that occurred and the townspeople found out the truth, Quasi would be ridiculed by everyone for being unable to protect his future wife. She even happened to think that it would probably stimulate Clopin if she let the bellringer embrace her – whereas Quasimodo, if he saw another man touch his sweetheart and knew she had agreed to that, would be even more depressed than when Phoebus had kissed Esmeralda in his presence – in spite of that Yvette was in no way in love with Clopin.

"What's the matter with you, Yvette dear?" Quasi asked anxiously. "Tell me the truth. Would you like to be with him?"

The girl started to cry inconsolably. Clopin embraced her and assured: "Yvette, I wouldn't take you from Quasi. If you give in to me we won't need to talk or think about the entire thing any more."

"No – I don't want to, and if I did, I would never in my life admit that to you or anyone!" sobbed Yvette. "As I said, it's just exciting to be the object of strong passions, although Phoebus tried to explain to me how dreadful it must have been that Frollo wanted Esmeralda for himself."

"Yvette, neither of us is like HIM", assured Quasimodo, "but if you want to avoid Clopin's lust you'll need actual protection, and I think I know where I'll have to take you, so you'll be safe."

Yvette grimaced again in her peculiar way. "You don't mean…?" Clopin snapped: "Stop teasing him, girlie!" Quasi was startled but said severely: "This is a serious matter! He might even rape you, and you only grimace at me wanting to give you in turn a sanctuary!"

When hearing the word "rape" Yvette slowly turned to look at the Gypsy leader and shuddered at the expression on his face. Only at the moment did she fully understand she was indeed lusted after in a way very similar to Esmeralda's experience. Even though Clopin had been gentle when she had cried, he really was able to use force, and suddenly, Yvette was sure he wouldn't hesitate to do that if she stayed in the hideout. So, she said to her beloved: "All right, Quasi, we'll go to Notre Dame, although it's a bit unpleasant that there I'll be forbidden from you as well."

Clopin found it best to say good-bye and to leave. Yvette hesitated for a while, and Quasimodo embraced her. Yvette detached herself from him. "I'll be back soon." Then she stepped out and followed the Gypsy man.

Clopin was rather surprised to see her when approaching his caravan. "What is it, girlie?" He opened the door and climbed inside, and Yvette stood next to the caravan.

"I…wanted to say something more to you", she said, lowering her head. "Actually, I…would like to let you caress me….but I don't want to sleep with you, nor can I even do that, for that would mean deceiving the man I love."

Clopin opened the door of the caravan and drew Yvette on his lap. He breathed against her neck in agitation, slowly opened the top of her dress and started to kiss her breasts. Yvette pressed herself to him. After a while, Clopin tried to reveal more of her body, but she said determinedly: "No! I'll let you caress me a bit every time we meet on the way to the Court of Miracles, but you must understand that's all I can agree to."

The Gypsy man controlled himself, hard as it was. He thought he would do what he wanted after Yvette would return from Notre Dame, but now, he said: "I knew you were fascinated by this, girlie."

Yvette walked back to Quasi's dwelling. She was anxious and ashamed; she didn't want to lie to the bellringer, but neither could she tell the truth. She was abated to see Quasimodo was leaving for Notre Dame to ring the bells. She decided she wouldn't let Clopin make more advances to her, even though she had enjoyed his caresses.
