Chapter Thirteen

With an extremely shaky hand, Mrs. Davis reached out to take the doll that looked like her son from Molly's hands. Andy remained limp, terrified of his mother's rejection so much more than Molly's. The woman stared at the toy she was holding and blinked back tears as she carefully let her finger run across the plastic face.

"He was talking before," Molly told her and Mrs. Davis stared at her confused. She shook her head as she held the toy. She didn't understand what she meant. This couldn't be happening and it scared her. She lifted Andy's arm and lowered it. "Andy, she's okay. It's okay."

Mrs. Davis just held the doll in her hands, she blinked away her tears before pressing it to her shoulder. She didn't understand where it would have come from or why it looked so much like her son. She placed the doll over her heart, keeping him there and remembering all the times she had held him growing up. She didn't understand what she was holding or where it had come from. "Sweetie, Molly, it's okay," she said before lowering the doll. "It's amazing how similar this doll looks to him." She said as she examined it thinking that it was just a toy.

"He was talking, he spoke to me," Molly said seeming to get more upset as Andy remained still.

"Toys can't talk. Maybe we should find out where he belongs or put him in the lost and found," Mrs. Davis handed Andy's new doll form to Molly who was staring at him in panic. "I mean, it's unbelievable the similarities but we need to find the owner of the doll. They are probably missing them. Imagine if they belonged to a small child."

"He belongs with us," Molly argued. "He was talking to me, he was" moving, he…Andy?" she squeaked before seeing Claire staring at the doll. She shivered before putting a hand over her mouth.

"Oh, god," she said as she began to panic and ran out whilst breaking down crying.

Molly held her brother's body and turned so their mother couldn't see him. "Why aren't you talking?" she asked before hearing Andy whisper.

"She can't face me like this. She'll throw me away," he said without moving and Molly stamped her foot.

"Don't talk like that, she won't do that to you," she said and Mrs. Davis sighed.

"Molly," she said sounding exhausted. She looked back at the empty bed. The doctors had all said that Andy's body had mysteriously vanished but even if some strange curse had turned him into a toy, toys couldn't move or talk. "We'll find a shoebox, bury the toy…but…"

"Would you reject him like this?" Molly asked before showing her the new form of her big brother. Mrs. Davis placed a hand over her mouth and cried before shaking her head. No matter what, she loved both of her children and she only wanted to keep them safe. Her eyes widened as she saw the doll lift its head and blinked. She was losing it as well.

"Really?" he asked and their mother stood up, moving backwards in shock. She felt a deep pain through her body and saw the doll move its limited joints to look at her. That was her little boy's voice, she would know it anywhere. "I'm sor-"

"Andy," she whispered as she got nearer to him. How was this possible? How had he just shrunk like that? Why did he look so plastic? She knelt down so she could look at him eye level as Molly held him. "What?" she said before reaching for the doll's hand. She saw his expression change to one of complete fear. "You're…you're under a curse? We can break this, we can fix this," she said as she let her finger tip touch his back and rub it. "Oh, baby," she said as she sobbed harder.

"I think I'm stuck this way," Andy admitted and his mother's heart broke as she noticed how guilty he appeared. She hated seeing that from him. "I'm sorry. I think I was given life that I wouldn't have another way."

Mrs. Davis nodded slowly. She sobbed again before placing her fingertip on his cheek. "At least you're alive," she said before holding her hand out and he moved into them. She helped him sit down, placing one hand underneath him and one against his back. She shivered a little but she tried to smile to her son. She noticed that he had elbow and knee joints but other than that he was just able to move his arms and legs as a thick slab of plastic.

"I don't think Claire should know," Andy said as he looked to the direction she had left and his mother nodded. She let her finger run up and down his back and he looked at her.

"Anything you need," she said before sobbing again. She pulled him close to her chest. "I'm here. I won't let anything hurt you any longer." She lifted her head and then heard Claire enter. She panicked as she saw Andy jump down, trying to find some place to hide and opened her purse, motioning that he should get inside.

"I think…did I…the doll?" Claire asked and Molly stared at her.

"What doll?" she asked as her mother checked the purse where Andy lay limp. Mrs. Davis wished she could do better for her son but she leaned down, whispering that she still loved him greatly. "I don't remember any doll."

"Maybe it's best that we leave. I'll come and try to find Andy's body tomorrow, they won't give us any information today."

Claire nodded, "Can I meet you back there then? I need some time to say goodbye," she told them and they both nodded. Mrs. Davis hugged her before checking her purse again. It would be a huge adjustment for the family but she would do anything for her son. At least he was alive. Molly grabbed the Woody doll and left with her mother.

TSTSTSTS

"We're nearly at the car, sweetheart," Mrs. Davis shivered as she looked into her purse again. "I love you, Andy," she tried to reassure him before they reached the car in the parking lot. Mrs. Davis tapped her pockets before realizing the keys were in her purse. "I just have to reach around you, baby," she said nervously. She felt a push against her heart as she touched his doll body.

She shivered as she looked at him, her hand shaking and then the worst thing happened. Through all of her nervousness, she dropped the bag and Andy felt himself roll along with a lipstick and a couple of other things. He was about to move before realizing there were others around and as a small boy approached him, he had to remain limp as he felt the stranger's fingers around him.

"Cool," he said as he picked Andy up by the leg. Both Andy's mother and Molly stared in horror as Andy remained limp. He dropped to the ground again as his shoe remained in the boy's hand. "I want," he said and Molly could feel her mother's fear. Molly was about to reach for him before finding the boy's mother to grab him. She looked up at them.

"Yes, you can have it," the mother said before looking at Mrs. Davis's desperate face. She wanted her son to move and escape but he just had the same limited movements as if he had always been a toy. "Toys are for children anyway."

"Give him back to me," Mrs. Davis said in a low voice, forgetting about the fact her wallet or car keys could easily be grabbed. The most precious thing in that bag was being held away from her. "Now." The woman stared at her as if she were crazy, there was no way that she would know this toy used to be human.

"Toys are for children," the woman said before grabbing Andy and stuffing him in her purse as one of his legs stuck out at a weird angle. Mrs. Davis gasped before grabbing the woman by the shoulder and lifted her fist.

"I'm warning you," she said as she felt her heart pounding through her body. "You don't want to mess with me. Give him back before I do something we both regret."

The woman glared at her before removing a whistle and Andy's mother forced the other woman down on the ground, one hand had slapped her and the other was wrapped around her neck. She knew she would sound insane if she explained the truth. Her son had no defenses anymore. He was helpless. She wouldn't ever stop protecting him.

Molly had taken the shoe as it had fallen on the ground but as the woman remained on the ground, Molly pulled Andy out by his leg and held him close.

"Mine!" the toddler wailed and Molly glared at him as she shoved Andy into her own pocket. She grabbed her mother's purse and most of the items around it before holding the car keys. "They took! They took!"

"Molly, get in the car!" their mother ordered and Molly nodded, handing her mother the car keys and Mrs. Davis didn't care about any of the pens or makeup on the ground but she did snatch some pocket sized photographs she had there. She turned on the car, driving away at a faster speed than was posted. It was only after exiting the parking lot that Mrs. Davis turned around and broke into tears again.

"Andy," she said painfully. "I am so so sorry. I would have helped you, you could have tried to escape."

"Mom," Andy said guiltily and looked across to see that Woody still wasn't moving for them. Maybe it was out of respect by knowing Andy needed the spotlight this time. "I -"

"He can't do anything, Mom," Molly whispered painfully. "He's a toy." Mrs. Davis shuddered hearing that. "He has to act like a toy when it's someone other than us. We can accept him but before today, I didn't know that any toys could move. Something worse might have happened to him."

"He's my son, he's not a toy," Mrs. Davis stressed before holding her hand out to take Andy back but Molly held onto him protectively. "Andy," the woman said in a pained manner. "You protect him, okay? He…he can't…he can't protect himself anymore." It had been far more painful than she had wanted to admit to see that woman just shove him casually into her own bag whilst he was stiff and under her complete control.

"Mom," Molly said as she leaned forwards. "He's a toy now."

"He's not a toy," Mrs. Davis argued, "He's not like other toys. He's not like them. He…he's human," she argued knowing that she was wrong but she didn't want to admit to the truth. Maybe there was a way of restoring him to being human again. They could be wrong. If there was a spell that made him into a toy, there was a spell that would make him a person again.

"He's just a toy," Molly argued and Mrs. Davis flinched at the word 'just' "He's a doll. He is a child's plaything."

Mrs. Davis suddenly stopped and gave her daughter a warning look. "No matter what you think, Molly. Don't you ever call him a child's plaything. He is our Andy. He's just in another form. Nothing will ever stop him from being Andy."
