a/n: a short scene expanded on, from "Hold That Tiger". Some things are harder for Schultz to ignore, than others…a blonde girl-shaped prisoner, for example…
Unsaid
I was born to make toys, not guard prisoners in barracks;
A man, not of war, but of peace.
I dream of the day when the guns will be silenced;
When battles and slaughter will cease.
~0~
I know that I'm viewed as naive, unobservant;
A blustering, cowardly fool,
Who shuts eyes and ears to all kinds of shenanigans,
Capers and plots and misrule.
~0~
I am wilfully ignorant, bribable, gullible;
Miss what's in front of my face;
In thrall to French cooking, struck dumb by warm strudel;
Spot nothing bizarre taking place.
~0~
So…pulleys and ropes, moving planks by the bunk beds
Are easy to see, then dismiss;
And I'm fooled by a stuck-on moustache and false accent…
Am I really as stupid as this?
~0~
Surely this time, though, my cover is broken,
They know that I know what they are…
A lady in camp, being measured for clothing,
Must strain my position too far.
~0~
But, I walk past the lady, the tape, and the tailor,
As though there is nothing awry.
A timed double-take as I gaze at the Colonel;
A challenging gleam in his eye.
~0~
I turn to the lady, who's following orders
To simply stay still, not react.
I scuttle away as if scared by her presence;
Convinced that they know it's an act.
~0~
They know, with one word, I could easily topple
Their set-up…just think what I'd gain,
If I told those in charge of the scale of deception;
And yet, as before, I refrain.
~0~
I want what is best for my home and my country,
To spare those I love from more harm;
I look at those monsters, who act as our leaders,
With horror and utmost alarm.
~0~
So, for now, I'll persist with unspoken collusion;
My role unacknowledged, unsaid.
Though others might note every fact and fine detail;
I'll see and know nothing instead.
