Chapter 4: It's Working

Thomas ran off to school trying to hide his neck from everyone. Thomas puts up his hood while in class trying to keep his neck hidden. "Hoods off Thomas, we're in class now," said the teacher from the front of the classroom. Thomas nodded as he took off his hood. Thomas looked around him hoping no one would notice his neck being black and blue. No one seemed to notice his neck, so Thomas laid his head down looking while doing his work. Anger was building inside him for what Adam had done to him. "Throw me in the room huh?" Thomas thought to himself as he wrote in his book. "Choke me huh?" Thomas thought as he wrote faster in his book. "Okay class, pencils down," The teacher said looking at everyone in the classroom. "Who the fuck do you think you are?" Thomas thought writing faster and faster.

"Thomas?" the teacher said, looking at Thomas. "Fucking touch me again I SWEAR!" Thomas's thoughts screamed. "Thomas!" The teacher called out to him. Thomas's pencil broke from writing so fast. "Fuck!" Thomas shouted, throwing his pencil. The teacher stood up and looked at Thomas. "Thomas, please go see the counselor," The teacher pointed to the door. Thomas sighed before gathering his things and headed for the counselor's office. Most of Thomas's friends look at him wondering what was wrong with him. Now that all eyes were on Thomas, he tried to hide his neck from everyone with the bruises.

"Dad!" Kodi said as he ran into the trawler. "Kodi?" Balto said with a yawn. "We need to talk about Thomas," Kodi said looking at his father. "What about Thomas?" Aleu asked, walking into the trawler. Kodi looked at his sister with worry on his face. "I think he's in trouble," Kodi answered. "Trouble? What kind of trouble?" Balto asked, now standing up. Kodi looked back at his father. "I think something is wrong at home with him," Kodi said with his ears down. "Why do you say that? What happened to Thomas?" Aleu asked, now worried for her owner. "He had bruises on his neck and…" Kodi started to explain but was cut off by Aleu. "WHAT?!" Aleu shouted with a growl.

"Aleu, calm down," Balto said to his daughter. "Calm down? Papa, Adam hurt my kid. I'm not going to stand here and not get angry," Aleu said with her ears back. "I know, but we have to think about this and not jump to conclusions," Balto said. "But he hurt my kid," Aleu said still angry. "I know Aleu but let's get the proof," Balto said as he started to exit his trawler. "Where are you going dad?" Kodi asked as he and Aleu watched their father. "I'm going to Thomas's house to see if I can find anything," Balto answered. "Should we go with you?" Aleu asked. "No, Aleu you wait at the school for Thomas and Kodi you go to the sled team, we don't need to make it Obvious we're onto Adam," Balto ordered. Aleu and Kodi both nodded as they did as they were told.

Balto walked on the outside of Thomas's house and looked around. Adams' truck was still there which meant he was home. Balto looked into the window of the living room and saw Adam was asleep in the recliner. "Good, he's asleep," Balto said as he went to the doggie door that was at the kitchen door. Balto walked inside the house through the doggie door and noticed all the alcohol bottles on the floor. "I'm surprised he's not dead for drinking himself to death," Balto said to himself as walked through the house. Balto quietly walked through the living room so he wouldn't wake up Adam.

Balto searched the house and noticed Adam was indeed looking for something. "He's looking for something, but why hurt Thomas for it?" Balto asked himself. Suddenly Balto heard the phone ring and Adam waking up and answering it. "Hello?" Adam asked groggy from sleeping. "No, I haven't found it yet," Adam said on the phone. Balto got closer to Adam so he could hear more clearly but not to be seen by him. "The kids at school but for all I care he could get lost in the forest," Adam said with a chuckle. Balto lightly growled from hearing what Adam said.

"It's going to be a lot of money when I find it," Adam said as he sat up in his chair. "Money?" Balto whispered to himself. "As for the kid he'll be out on the streets in two years," Adam said as he stood up and went to the kitchen to get a can of beer. "And if the kid knows where it is I'll just beat it out of him," Adam said with a dark laugh. "Not on my watch Adam," Balto whispered to himself. "Alright, I'll meet you there," Adam said before drinking the rest of his beer. Adam then hung up the phone and went out the door. Balto then came out of hiding and watched Adam leave with his truck down the road. "What are you looking for Adam?" Balto asked before leaving the house himself.

Aleu was waiting at the school for Thomas along with other dogs also waiting for their owners. Aleu noticed other dogs were talking among themselves while looking at Aleu. "What are you looking at?" Aleu asked rudely. The group of dogs then moved away from Aleu as she snapped at them. "Being part wolf is going to get me in trouble," Aleu said to herself as she laid down. "Mommy can I pet that dog?" A little girl asked her mother. Aleu perked up knowing she was talking about her. "No sweetie, she's part wolf, she could bite you," the little girl's mother said as she took her daughter away from Aleu. "Great, if they wanted to make me feel bad it's truly working," Aleu said to herself as she laid back down. After a while of waiting the school bell rang and kids started leaving to go home or do what they do after school. Th?mas was the last one to leave the school. "Thomas!" Aleu said as she ran up to her human. "Hey Aleu," Thomas said in a low tone. "Can we talk?" Aleu asked as she and Thomas started walking away from the school. "Sure," Thomas said as they walked over to an Alleyway. "What do you want to talk about?" Thomas asked sitting down his backpack

"It's about Adam," Aleu said looking at her owner. Thomas knew what she was about to say since Kodi probably told her and Balto about his neck. "Whatever it is it's nothing," Thomas spoke as he picked up his backpack. "Thomas, Kodi told me about your neck, let me take a look at it," Aleu said. "No, I'm fine," Thomas said as he started to leave. "Let me look!" Aleu said as she jumped onto Thomas. "Hey! Let me go!" Thomas shouted while struggling to get free. Aleu saw the bruising on his neck and gasped at how dark they were which meant Adam squeezed deeply on his neck. "Get off of that kid!" A man's voice shouted from a distance. Aleu looked at the man who then chased after her. "Get out of here you wolf!" The man shouted. Aleu quickly got off Thomas but before Thomas could defend her the man threw some snow at Aleu and quickly casted her out. "Aleu wait!" Thomas said getting up while Aleu ran off. "You okay kid?" The man asked. "What the heck man! That was my dog!" Thomas shouted angrily. "That was a dog? She looked more like a wolf than a dog," the man said. "Ugh!" Thomas shouted as he grabbed his backpack and went after Aleu. "You're welcome!" The man called out to Thomas.

Aleu ran off until she was out of sight with tears in her eyes. "That man… he… did he think I was hurting my own human?" Aleu asked herself. "Am I a monster?" Aleu asked herself. "Aleu!" Thomas called out to her. Aleu heard her name being called by Thomas. "Maybe I should keep my distance from him," Aleu said with her ears down. "Maybe he would rather have a real dog and not a wolf-dog," Aleu said, lowering her head. "Aleu!" Thomas called her name again. "I'm sorry Thomas," Aleu said, taking off again. "Aleu please!" Thomas said while walking down the street. Suddenly a familiar truck pulled up by Thomas. It was Adam. "You should've been home by now!" Adam growled. "I was looking for Aleu," Thomas said, looking at Adam. "Forget the wolf! You have chores to do and dinner to make!" Adam shouted. "She's not a wolf!" Thomas snapped back with his blood boiling from anger. "What gives you the right to talk back to me?! Get in the truck!" Adam shouted. Thomas wanted to continue looking for Aleu but knew if he didn't get in the truck he would be in trouble. "Fine," Thomas said, getting into the truck.

Once Thomas was in the truck and they started driving home. Once they pulled up to the house Thomas was about to get out of the truck until Adam grabbed Thomas and pulled on his arm. "Adam, your hurting me," Thomas said looking at his step father. "If you ever talk to me like that again you'll be sorry, you got it?" Adam said, staring down at Thomas. "Okay, I won't do it again," Thomas said as he swallowed hard. "Good, now get out!" Adam shouted as he pushed Thomas out of the truck making Thomas hit the snowy ground. "That house better be spotless and food better be on the table when I get back home!" Adam said as he shuts his truck door. Th?mas then stood up and brushed off the snow from his clothes and looked at Adam. "Where are you going?" Thomas asked. "None of your business!" Adam said as he sped off down the road. "Jerk," Thomas said as he walked into his house, which was a disaster from Adam. Thomas sighed as he started to clean the living room.

Balto was at his trawler trying to think of what Adam could be looking for. "It's something that's worth a lot of money and if Thomas knows what it is then he's in danger as well," Balto said to himself. "Dad?" Kodi said coming into his fathers trawler. "Hey son," Balto said looking at his son. "Did you find out anything?" Kodi asked. "Adam is looking for something That's worth a lot of money," Balto answered. "Money? That's what he's after?" Kodi asked. "Yes, and he thinks Thomas knows something about it," Balto explained. "And that's why he could be hurting him?" Kodi asked. Balto nodded in response. "Have you seen your sister?" Balto asked. Kodi shook his head. "Not since this morning," Kodi answered. "If Adam hurts Thomas then he could hurt Aleu," Balto said as he started to leave his trawler. "Where are you going?" Kodi asked, looking at his father. "We need to get Thomas and Aleu out of that house," Balto said as he took off to Thomas's house. "You'll need some help," Kodi said as he took off with his father.

Aleu ran off to a place only Thomas and her knew. When Aleu was a pup Thomas took her deep in the forest where they found an Abandoned treehouse. Th?mas built a ramp so Aleu herself could get up into the treehouse. Aleu laid down in the treehouse and cried. "If I wasn't part wolf then… I could just live a normal life with Thomas," Aleu said to herself with a sniff. Suddenly a raven landed in the window of the treehouse. Aleu looked at the raven and saw it looking at her. "What do you want?" Aleu asked looking at the raven. "Follow…" the raven spoke before flying away. "Follow?" Aleu asked now standing up. Aleu saw the raven flying into the distance trying to make her follow it. "Maybe…" Aleu said as he got down from the treehouse and followed the Raven into the dark of the night.
