Chapter 1: Perry's Plight

Perry the Platypus acrobatically avoided incoming blows from large meat cleavers that swung at him. He held onto his brown fedora as a blow nearly cut it. Major Monogram didn't like it when O.W.C.A agents damaged their fedoras, claiming they were expensive.

"Stand still, you freaky little bird, mammal, thing!" Perry narrowed his eyes in annoyance while staring at the villain before him. A scrawny man wearing a chef's attire and a backpack with four mechanical arms holding meat cleavers.

Perry battled the fiend while inside a kielbasa processing plant.

"You won't stop Chef Mortier from becoming the only seller of kielbasa in the tri-state-area!" Another scoundrel who didn't even know what kind of animal he was.

Perry looked over at Mortier's large vat of toxic waste, which was about to pour into the meat containers. Moving fast, the platypus agent leaped up and kicked away two cleavers using his foot spikes and smacked Mortier in the face with his tail.

"Ahhh! So filthy! I'm a top chef!" Mortier yelped when he saw Perry charging at the toxic waste.

"Hey, get away from there, you dirty little!" Perry got onto the vat and pulled with all his might, breaking it off the pouring mechanism and rolling the container towards Mortier.

"Wait no! I have meals to make!" The vat crashed into Mortier and sent him crashing out the window. Perry climbed up to the window and saw Mortier climbing out of the vat. His body now glowed green, and fur began to grow over him.

"Ahhhh!" An O.W.C.A truck drove up, and five men in hazmat gear loaded the crazed chef into a tank of water. Perry took a deep breath and wiped some sweat from his brow.

Since his nemesis, Doofenshmirtz, gave up evil. Perry was now free to bring down other villains, though, in some way, he was starting to miss his tango's with Doofenshmirtz. In many ways, there'd been a mutual respect between them, of course, Perry was happy that Heinz had given up his life of crime, or rather his attempts at crime. But still, none of his new adversaries really felt the same.

Perry heard his wrist communicator go off and looked to see Major Monogram displayed before him.

"Well done Agent P, that's five villains this week alone. Since Doofenshmirtz went straight, you've done the work of three agents. Are you sure you're not interested in that promotion to senior agent, it comes with an office and cappuccino machine!"

"They're so good!" Carl shouted as he revealed himself behind the Major with two cappuccinos in hand.

"Ohh, thank you, Carl." Monogram said as he took a drink. Perry's expression hardened. As much as he'd like the promotion, it would mean leaving his family behind, leaving Phineas and Ferb. Perry closed his eyes while shaking his head.

"Alright, but if you change your mind." Perry yelped as he felt a sharp pain in his back and stumbled.

"Agent P? Agent P!" Monogram shouted. Perry pulled a dart out of his back before his vision went blurry. The agent soon lost control of his sensory functions and dropped the dark before falling towards the street below.

"Agent P!"

Back inside the plant, a dark figure walked towards the window and picked up his dart. The assailant smiled while watching Perry convulse on the street below.

Elsewhere, in Danville, five youths raced through the streets on solar-powered hover-bikes. The five weaved between cars without disturbing them, eventually passing a police cruiser at a stoplight that they promptly stopped at. The officer looked over at the red-haired boy beside her.

"Hey kid, what are you doing?" She asked.

"Oh, afternoon officer, we're just trying out our new solar-powered hover-cyles." She lowered her shades while looking at the other kids.

"Aren't you a bit young to be inventing, clean and efficient vehicles?"

"Why yes, yes we are."

"Well, keep those helmets on and stay safe."

"Will do, officer." Phineas raced ahead while Ferb and the others came in close behind. The wind ran through their faces and filled them with adrenaline.

"This is so much fun! I feel like I'm flying!" Baljeet shouted.

"You're not flying. You're hovering off the ground." Buford said harshly as Baljeet glared at him.

"You don't have to break my illusion."

"But it's so much fun." Buford chuckled. Eventually, the five stopped when they noticed some clouds covering the sun up ahead.

"Welp looks like we have to wait for the clouds." Phineas said.

"Wait a minute, you mean these things don't have batteries, they need to constantly be in sunlight!" Baljeet cried.

"Well, the materials used in batteries can be harmful to the environment. Metals such as lithium, copper, and nickel can release toxic compounds." Ferb said.

"Ferb's right, we can wait for a minute. Maybe we can even use the break to add those connectors so we can ride together!" Phineas shouted as he and Ferb took out magnets and tools.

"You want to make a tandem bike and ride together!" Isabella tried not to squeal as she came closer to Phineas.

"Well, we were thinking of joining all the bikes together, but we could start with two-" Phineas started before he saw something near the kielbasa plant.

"Hey, wait a minute, Perry!" Phineas dropped his tools and ran over with Ferb close behind. The brothers stopped when they saw their pet platypus convulsing on the sidewalk with a sickly complexion.

"Perry, what are you doing here!? What's wrong!?" Phineas picked Perry up in his arms with a horrified look as he saw his pet's eyes struggle to stay open.

"Perry!" Isabella and the others joined in as they saw the sick Platypus they all loved.

Back at the Flynn-Fletcher house, Linda Flynn worked on a puzzle while on the phone.

"I'm glad you're having fun, Candace. Are you being polite to Stacy's parents? I just have to ask. It's what mothers do Candace. Alright be safe, I'll call you later."

"Ohh, was that Candace, how's her ski trip in Colorado going?" Lawrence Fletcher asked as he carried a new package for their antique shop into the kitchen.

"It's going well. I'm glad she can finally relax without needing to make up stories about the boys doing impossible things."

"Well, that monster-truck arena they built was quite the feat."

"Exactly." Linda chuckled, unaware that her husband wasn't being sarcastic.

"Mom! Dad!" Both turned to see Phineas and Ferb rush in with their friends.

"Boys, what's wrong?" Linda started until she saw a very sick Perry in Phineas's arms.

"Mom! Perry's sick! We have to do something!" Phineas shouted frantically.

"Oh my, you poor thing. Everyone in the car, we'll take him to the vet."

An hour later, the Flynn-Fletchers anxiously sat in the veterinarian's waiting area while Perry was looked at.

"He's gonna be ok, right mom?" Linda saw the fear and pain in her son and stepson's eyes and tried to look optimistic.

"I'm sure he will, Platypuses are very resilient. Maybe he just ate something that didn't agree with him." Phineas and Ferb went back to staring at the door until finally, the vet came back out.

"Doctor is Perry ok!" Phineas shouted. The doctor tugged at the collar of his shirt nervously before turning to Phineas's parents.

"Mrs. and Mr. Flynn-Fletcher, may I speak with you alone." Both adults looked at each other nervously before walking with the doctor further inside. There, they saw Perry still convulsing on a table.

"Well, I must admit platypi aren't my specialty, but I wish there was better news." Linda took her husband's hand and braced herself.

"What does that mean?" Lawrence nervously asked. Taking another deep breath, the doctor stroked Perry's head.

"I can't figure out the cause of his poisoning, but he must have been pierced by something that's burning through him slowly. Without knowing what it was, there's not much that can be done."

"What!? Can't you give him penicillin or something!?" Linda shouted.

"This isn't an infection. It's hard to describe. All I can tell you is that he might last a week or two, but it will be a slow and very painful passing for him. You can seek another evaluation, but in my opinion, the most humane thing is to put him to sleep."

Lawrence and Linda felt their hearts beak as they stood over Perry. Linda wiped away a tear before picking him up in her arms.

"What are we going to tell the boys?" She almost sobbed.

"I don't know...I don't know." Lawrence muttered.

That night, the two carefully entered their sons' room as they saw them try to feed him warm-chicken soup.

"Come on Perry, try to eat something." Phineas said while Ferb massaged the platypus's feet. Both hadn't lost their anxious expression from earlier. Perry shook with pain and agony in his face, the mammal unable to eat or even growl.

"Boys, we need to talk." Linda forced the words from her mouth as she entered with Lawrence. Their sons slowly looked back as Linda and Lawrence took them by the shoulders.

"Boys, I'm afraid the vet didn't have good news. Perry isn't going to get better." Linda said slowly.

"What? No!" Phineas shouted as Ferb began to tremble.

"Boys, we're sorry, but sometimes these things happen. Right now, Perry is in a lot of pain, and we don't want him to suffer." Phineas and Ferb knew where their father was going and jerked back before grabbing Perry together.

"No! You can't! Perry's part of the family!" Tears filled their eyes, and both parents tried to fight back their own.

"Boys-" Linda started.

"Please! Maybe we can help him, give us a few days, please!" Phineas begged. Linda opened her mouth, but Lawrence put his hand on her shoulder.

"Linda, what's say we give them a day or two. He's their first pet." Linda took a deep breath and nodded.

"Alright, we'll wait a few days and see if he gets better." When their parents left, Phineas and Ferb hugged Perry while still crying. However, when they set him down, both nodded to each other with fiery determination.

"We won't give up on you, Perry! Never, Ferb, let's do this!" All night, the two conducted extensive medical examinations on Perry while also delving into advanced medical science. Phineas looked at the results of their latest tests before turning to Ferb, who was skyping with top veterinarians from Japan, France, India, and the United States.

The veterinarians shook their heads while Ferb grit his teeth and looked back at Phineas. By the time dawn broke, Phineas and Ferb had fallen asleep at their lab stations, and Perry tried to activate his communicator.

"Agent P, we've spoken with your vet, and well." Carl sobbed behind Monogram as the Major patted his intern's shoulder.

"Agent P!" The young-man wailed.

"We won't stop searching for an antidote, Agent P! I swear we'll find a way to save you!" Perry would have teared up himself, but he was in too much pain. Was this it, this is how he'd end his life? There was still so much more Perry wanted to do. So many experiences with Phineas and Ferb he wanted to have. So many villains to stop.

A knock on Phineas and Ferb's door woke them up, and they turned with bloodshot eyes to see Isabella with Baljeet and Buford.

"Phienas, Ferb." Isabella said softly as she came in with a sympathetic expression.

"Is Perry any better?" Buford asked nervously before they saw him.

"Oh no. Poor Perry." Isabella began to tear up while she cradled him.

"To think such a small and innocent creature could endure such pain."

"Phineas, Ferb, what have you been doing?" Isbella asked before she saw the lab equipment.

"We have to find a way to cure Perry before." Phineas choked on his words before Baljeet and Buford embraced each other.

"No!" They cried together. Isabella's eyes narrowed, and her expression turned to steel before she pulled out her Fireside girl's first aid badge.

"Alright, Dr. Flynn, Dr. Fletcher, what do you need from us?" She asked, full of determination.

Phineas tightened his fists and looked at the equations and formulas they'd been making all night.

"I don't know! We've tried everything, but we can't get any closer! It's not fair! We've been able to do everything we put out minds too, but we can't help Perry!" Phineas began to tear up again before Isabella gave him a warm hug.

Ferb, however, rose back up with renewed vitality in his eyes.

"There may be something else." Ferb said as he moved his bookcase and opened a vault to reveal a seemingly ancient book.

"Woah, what's that?" Phineas asked while the others looked at the book as Ferb opened it up to a page with strange art on it. The picture resembled art from Africa depicting a tree beneath the sun with animals from around the world living around it and four lions guarding them.

"According to legends, there exists a place in eastern Africa, a place called the Tree of Life. It's said that the tree supports every type of environment and animals from around the world, even extinct ones."

"That's impossible!" Baljeet shouted.

"Since when has that ever been a problem for us?" Buford asked.

"Good point."

"The legends say that animals who come to the Tree of Life can be healed from any injury or sickness." Phineas felt life return to him as he stared intensely at the artwork. Ferb revealed an ancient map on the next page, and the two brothers lifted the book up together before nodding with fierce resolve.

"Guys, I know what we're gonna do today!" Isabella, Bajeet, and Buford mirrored their expressions while nodding.

"For Perry!"

Linda was reading through a parenting book on how to help your child through losing their first pet.

"Why did I think this would make it any easier?" She muttered before seeing her boys walk outside with their friends and Perry.

"Mom, we're going to find the Tree of Life to save Perry!"

Linda almost teared up and sniffled while wiping her eyes.

"Alright, boys, good luck." Phineas and Ferb led their friends to the backyard where Ferb pressed a remote, and a hovercraft vehicle floated down from their tree.

"When did you build that?" Baljeet asked.

"A few days ago, it took less time than we thought, so we did something else that day." Phineas sat in the passenger seat while Ferb took the wheel, and the others sat in the back. They sat the map against the craft's navigation device before lifting up.

"Let's save Perry!" Phineas shouted as he raised his fist with the others.

Across Danville, Milo, Mellissa, and Zack walked into Milo's backyard when they noticed Dr. Doofenshmirtz writing equations on a whiteboard.

"Morning Dr. Doofenshmirtz, what are you up too?" Milo asked.

"Oh morning, well I was sitting around on your couch watching tv when I realized that if I am going to invent time-travel one day, I should probably start trying to figure out what Time Juice is, so I've been working all morning to try and get a start."

"I still can't believe he's supposed to create time-travel." Zack whispered to Melissa, who smirked back at Dr. Doofenshmirtz.

"Weirder things have happened."

"Maybe we could help-" Milo started as he walked forward. Not a moment later, the screws holding Doofenshmirtz's whiteboard up fell out and the board collapsed onto him.

"Ouch! Wow that's heavier than it looks."

"Oh, sorry, Murphy's law."

"Yeah, you know what, maybe I should do this somewhere else. I know, I'll ask Perry the Platypus for help, he's become such a good friend since I gave up evil. I'll be back for dinner." Doofenshmirtz said while taking his notes.

Heinz walked through Danville before he reached O.W.C.A headquarters and knocked on the door. A Duck agent opened the doors with a sad expression.

"Hey, is Perry the Platypus here? I was hoping to bounce some ideas off him." The Duck cried into his wings before running off.

"What did I say?" Doofenshmirtz slowly walked in and saw the same lament in all the animal agents.

"What happened here?" Doofenshmirtz eventually found Monogram and Carl standing by a pig, an elephant, and a dolphin agent all in lab coats while looking over antidotes.

"Come on agents E2, D2, and P2. You have to do something for Agent P!" Monogram shouted. The three removed their goggles and shook their heads.

"No!" Carl collapsed on the ground as Doofenshmirtz came over.

"What's going on here? Where's Perry the Platypus?"

"Ohh, Doofenshmirtz, it's horrible! Agent P's been poisoned, and without the poison, we can't make an antidote!" Monogram hugged Doofenshmirtz as Heinz's eyes widened.

"What? No! Perry the Platypus cannot die, no! He's my only friend! No!" Doofenshmirtz ran back to the Murphy's and frantically worked his fingers tot he bone trying to find a way to help him, but came up with nothing.

He tried five different machines on himself but nothing worked.

"Dag nap it. None of my cureinators are working! No! I won't give up on Perry! Wait a minute. I'm starting to remember something, yes! Norm!"

"Here sir!" The robotic man came out with a stack of papers. Doofenshmirtz furiously dug through the documents until he found it.

"There you are! Evil plan number 343. Find the legendary Tree of Life and steal it, then charge millions for people to cure their pets. I wonder why I never got around to it? Anyway, Norm, we're going to find the Tree of Life and extract an antidote for Perry the Platypus from it!"

"An outstanding idea sir!"

"I know, now come on, we don't have any time to waste!" Doofenshmirtz and Norm pulled out a hovercraft from the Murphy's shed and flew off. All the while Milo, Melissa, and Zack watched.

"He had a hovercraft this whole time and never let us ride it!" Zack shouted.

"You want to ride it with Milo?" Melissa chuckled.

"...Good point."

Unknown to Doofenshmirtz, three figures watched him as he flew off.

"There he goes, everything is proceeding according to plan."
