Chapter 12 : The Siblings' Reunion

Still embracing each other, totally oblivious to their surroundings, Cagalli and Kira were absorbed in their little reunion.

"I guess we better put this meeting on hold, seems like the siblings need their private little reunion. Let's talk again tomorrow." Patrick said to all of them. "Athrun, you come with me." He continued, before really exiting the room.

"Yes, father." Athrun slightly bowed. With that, the king and the prince left the meeting room.

"Kira? I- how are you?" Cagalli looked at her brother carefully, afraid that it was all just a dream. "Do you know how amazed I am to see you here?" Cagalli told him honestly, it was like a miracle for her.

"Believe me, I feel the same." Kira told her as he smiled. He was on the verge of crying actually, he felt so relieved to see his sister was alive, safe and sound in front of his eyes.

"I guess I will leave you two alone." The silver haired man stood up from his seat and beamed a smile at the two, a bit longer at Cagalli, and then he left the room.

"Who is he? Do I know him?" Cagalli sensed some familiarity, but she doubted her memory.

"I'm sure you do. He is King Frigard, Cagalli."

Her eyes widened in shock. "King Frigard? The King of the South? Halsten Frigard?"

"Yes, one and only."

"But how? You and him? I mean this is so confusing."

"You do realize that you also have a lot to explain, don't you?"

She nodded slowly, "Okay, how to start?"

"King Patrick, we can't make any wrong move. You knew perfectly, rejecting the eastern request would already stir them up and now you're helping the Athha?" The man said with a slightly annoyed tone in his voice.

"Do you have a better solution duke Joule? To be honest, when I rejected their request, I didn't know the princess was right under my nose." King Patrick held his gaze toward his own son. He felt confused as to why Athrun was having the princess under his roof. If they couldn't keep this information within their walls, surely the east would make an assumption that they were helping the Athhas.

"They have to leave immediately from this country. Before anything happens. We can't risk anything further, your Majesty. Besides, I don't believe in the Athhas, especially the princess, how can she hide under the Western Prince if she didn't know anything about him? Maybe she was planning it all out." Yzak said again.

"Relax Yzak, you know perfectly she wasn't there at the time her father was dead, the princess knew nothing about the coup. Besides, the prince was the one who offered her protection, right, your Grace?" Dearka said with his relaxed tone, despite this heated meeting.

"I don't know why you really like to create problems, your grace, but this is too much." Yzak shot at Athrun.

Athrun was in his silent mode. He didn't say anything from the start of this sudden meeting. He has a lot in his mind apparently.

"We have to help the Athha." He said, breaking his own silence.

"It's quite difficult. Our kingdom never get involved with other countries' issues." King Patrick reasoned.

"I know but what if, what if with helping the Athhas will be beneficial for this kingdom?" Athrun argued.

"What do you mean?" Yzak furrowed one of his eyebrows.

"I will marry the princess, so we can extend our power to the east."

That sentence sent all of them into silence. They didn't expect the Prince to propose such things. Now, it was clear as why the Prince keep the princess safe under his authority.

"Wha-what?" Yzak tried to confirm his hearing. "You know perfectly that prince Kira is the crown prince right? Even if you marry the princess, we won't have any of their land!" Now, Yzak was a bit angry. It was no time for romance. Athrun must be blinded by love, so he wanted to risk his country for this one girl. Yzak would never agree with that.

"Still, it would be beneficial for us, since we never traded anything with them. Don't you want to know what was their secret for their wealth?" Athrun tried to explain his reason.

"I don't see how beneficial this would be

for our country, Athrun." His father seemed unconvinced.

"Father, the Athhas have a secret for their wealth. Something is off with the new ruler from the East. They keep on searching for the princess, even though we all know that females in the eastern kingdom have nothing to do with any work in the east. They already killed the late Eastern King so why do they really want the princess so badly? I think she holds the key to the power of their wealth." Athrun paused a bit, "So, father, if we can get their secret, western kingdom would be wealthier than ever." he looked at his father, wishing he could convince his father with all of his bluff. Of course, it was all just a bluff, he just wanted to protect Cagalli, but he knew better, his father won't allow such petty reason for risking this country. He should never have too, but maybe they all right, love is blind. He couldn't just let Cagalli go, without doing anything to protect her.

Yzak felt something suspicious about Athrun's proposal. This was not Athrun. King Patrick might propose something like this, but Athrun, no. He never felt the need to make this kingdom wealthier than it already was. He looked at him carefully, wishing to catch something on his facial reaction. Nothing, he was unfathomable. Yzak didn't really understand the need to help the Athhas.

"What do you think, your majesty? This could be a great plan for our kingdom." Athrun asked his father. Hoping he would agree.

"I don't think this is a good idea, your Majesty." Yzak said carefully. "We won't know for sure if what the prince said is true, but one thing for sure, if we help them, we have to be ready for war and sacrifices."

"Sacrifices are necessary for every goal, don't you know Mr. Joule?" Athrun maintained his stoic face when he said this. "Father, this will be a great opportunity for us. Please consider."

"Duke Elsman, do you have any say on this?" The King turned to the man who was seated beside Duke Joule. He seemed occupied with his own thinking.

"I actually agree with the Prince, your Majesty. I know this would be a high risk decision. However, logically, if we compare our strength to the eastern, I guess we could win this war. If we win this war, like the prince said, it would be a great benefit for our kingdom. Isn't it great?" Dearka sided with Athrun. Yzak didn't look pleased with that.

Patrick looked at his son carefully, he was trying to confirm if Athrun really meant what he just said. Athrun was never an ambitious one like , seeing he was so determined about this made him a bit proud, finally he showed that he cared for his kingdom. Something didn't feel right, but he decided to dismiss it for now.

"Very well, let's make a proposal to Prince Kira."

"What kind of rejection is this? Did the west want to wage a war with us!" George banged on his desk. He couldn't believe it, the west rejected his request. The letter said that the west didn't want to get involved with other country business, that could jeopardize their peace.

"Then no other choice! Sent a group to sneak on the west. We have to abduct her!" George barked angrily. In the midst of his anger, someone stepped in.

"I will go myself, your Majesty." It was Sir Le Crueset who spoke. "Finding the princess is so important right now, the countryside have been complaining about the lack of virility on their soil. The magic will be lost if we don't find her immediately. The sage already told you that, I suppose, your Majesty."

"We just have 6 more months before the magic will really disappear." George responded to Raw's statement. "There'll be chaos if we don't find her fast."

"Yes, that is why I offered myself to find the princess. We can't postpone it any longer." The masked man convinced the king.

"Then proceed immediately!" George ordered."And Sir, I won't accept any failure from you." The masked man just nodded and he exited the room in a rush.

"Seiran, prepared for the North, we have something to do about them too." George continued.

"Kira what would we do now? Why does King Frigard want to help us?" Cagalli asked Kira, they already left the meeting room, now they were sitting in Kira's temporary chamber in the west.

"Cagalli, please don't get mad at me."

"Huh?"

"Listen, I know you didn't like arranged marriage. Unless you already have someone in your mind. I will cancel your engagement right away." Kira talked so fast, Cagalli didn't understand a thing.

"What? What engagement? Can you speak slower, Kira?" Cagalli tried to understand, but still didn't get what Kira meant. It felt like Kira omitted some important information on his sentences.

Kira gave her an envelope as he said, "You're engaged now, but before you said anything, read that first. It's from father."

Engage? With whom? She decided to read the letter to find the answer. She must have been too happy to see Kira alive, she almost forgot that her father was gone. She read the letter carefully, and then her tears came again. She cried while reading the letter, a silent cry this time. After she read it, she repeated it from the first sentence to the last. She repeated it five times, to grasp what her father really said. She didn't believe what she just read. She never knew about that curse. Her mother never told her that nor anything in the books she read had said about that curse. So, it was true, her father just wanted to protect her, just like he always does.

"You have to get married. Soon. I guess Halsten is a decent guy. Besides, he likes you." Kira finally gave her the important piece of information.

"But-" She suddenly remembered about Athrun.

"But what?"

She hesitated to tell Kira about Athrun. She still didn't know what she felt toward him or what he felt toward her. He just said he will protect her, he never said something about him liking her as a woman. Besides, Athrun was a kind man, she wasn't sure that his act of kindness these past weeks was because he was interested in her as a woman.

She shook her head, clearing her mind. Even though she felt a bit saddened at the fact that maybe Athrun had no feelings for her, she realized Halsten already had a good intention toward her. Compared to Yuuna, Halsten was ten thousand times better.

She might know nothing personally about Halsten, but she remembered him because he was the one who saved her from drowning when she was a child. She never thanked him directly, but she knew her father and brother maintained a good relationship with him. Kira also likes to brag about him a lot and Cagalli believes in Kira. So, it will be a good marriage, right? Besides, Kira said, Halsten really likes her right? Even though she was not an eastern princess, he still asked her hand in marriage, it was some kind of proof that he likes her not for her position, right?

"Nothing, you're right. He will be a good husband." She gave him a fake smile. Kira didn't miss it. She seemed bothered about something.

"Are you sure?" Kira asked her one more time. He wasn't convinced.

This time Cagalli smiled more brightly, trying to act better than the last time. "Yes, I'm okay with engagement. Thank you, Kira."

"It's good to hear, I'm really afraid you will be so angry about this."

Cagalli shook her head, she tried to understand, Kira just wanted her to be safe. She believed in Kira's choice. For now, she won't rebel about anything anymore. Her rebellion cost her her father's life, she won't risk Kira's too.
