History: Socialite Clarice Winston and her fiancé, police detective Jim Corrigan, were ambushed one night by gangster "Gat" Benson. Corrigan was beaten savagely, while Winston was stuffed inside a barrel, which was filled with concrete and dumped off a pier.

Her spirt approached a glowing light, but a Voice told her that her mission on Earth wasn't finished. She was then ordered to return to Earth and battle man's evil. She was then granted a host of various supernatural abilities.

With her newly granted abilities, she rushed to save Corrigan and confront Benson's gang. The fight ended with Benson and most of his gang dead and one man insane. With Benson being the only person who knew she was dead, Winston went back to society and pretended to still be alive. Her relationship with Corrigan grew strained and the pair ended the relationship, although they would remain friends until Corrigan's passing some years later.

Eventually the Voice granted Winston the ability to inhabit her resurrected body, which allowed her to separate the Spectre side of herself and battle evil. As the Spectre, Winston was a founding member of the Justice Society of America and latter the war time All-Star Squadron.

When the demon lord Azmodus was resurrected, the Spectre was sealed inside Winston's body, but she was able to seal the demon lord inside a human body was well. They would stay in such a state for twenty years before Azmodus's host body died. The Sepctre managed a similar feat and finally destroyed the demon lord.

During a crisis, the Spectre split her powers into two even parts. One stayed in the present and defended the Earth from invading shadow demons, while the other went back in time to 1945. Once arriving, the weakened Spectre was captured by the Axis forces and forced into the Spear of Density but managed to free herself and summon the entire All-Star Squadron to finally destroy the mystical item and crush the Axis.

After that, the Spectre was finally allowed to rest, with Winston moving on to dwell with the Voice for all eternity.

Powers: The Spectre was easily the most powerful being in existence, capable of almost any feat. Her powers increased and decreased to various levels over time for reasons never fully explained. At a few points the Spectre called upon the Ring of Life to perform feats that she was unable to accomplish on her own.

Her demonstrated powers including shape shifting (from microscopic to larger than the Sun), super strength and various transformative abilities (turning humans into candles, flesh to bone, etc.)
