Cam thought he was done being a jealous boyfriend. He had caused way too many problems with Claire in middle school by overreacting to boys paying any attention to her. They were seniors now, and Cam was mature enough to know that a couple stupid comments or winks from Derrick or Dempsey couldn't hurt. Cam no longer felt like anyone was trying to steal his girlfriend.

Well, until recently.

Claire and Massie had been friends for years. Or at least, something close to friends. Cam wasn't sure what to make of their relationship in middle school, but the two had only gotten closer over the years. But lately, Cam felt like another shift had happened.

On the days when they sat with their friends instead of each other at lunch, Cam would watch her across the cafeteria. Massie had taken to getting really touchy with Cam's girlfriend. No one would ever accuse Massie Block of being warm and fuzzy, but she was suddenly always leaning in close when Claire would tell a joke or touching her arm, shoulder, back; it was starting to get to Cam a little.

If it were just that, Cam wouldn't have thought much of it. But when Massie would look over at Cam during those moments, arm wrapped around his girlfriend, with the trademark Block smirk on her face, he knew he was in trouble. Massie was declaring an act of war.

Things escalated over the next month. Massie would crash their dates and snuggle up against Claire in Taco Bell booths and theater seats. Massie had taken to commenting on every insta photo of them with things like "total hottie! i'd love to help you crop out the rando!" or "dump him already omg." It culminated in Massie beating him to a big ask to homecoming. Claire told him that homecoming was more for friends anyway and prom was for couples, despite the fact that they had gone to every homecoming together.

Cam had had enough. After a lunch where Massie had kissed Claire on the cheek multiple times and even had the audacity to wink at Cam, he decided it was the last straw. While Claire stood at her locker, Cam confronted her.

"Oh, please Cam. Massie is not trying to steal me from you. First, I'm a person with my own agency. I can't be stolen."

Cam balked at this. "I know! That's not going to stop her from trying!"

Claire put her hand up to stop him. "Second, we're friends. We've always been close. I don't know why you suddenly have an issue, but I don't like this side of you."

Cam wasn't sure how to respond. How could Claire not see the change in Massie?

Before he could formulate an actual response, Massie walked up and immediately put her hand on Claire's shoulder.

"Hey babe, can I borrow your perfume?"

It was hard not to notice the way Claire's face lit up with Massie's presence. They had only been apart a couple minutes, for crying out loud.

"Of course!" After handing her the bottle, Claire turned back to Cam. "By the way, I won't be in chemistry today. Massie and I are going on a homecoming errand for student council."

"But we're still hanging out tonight, right?"

"Oh, sorry Cam! Massie and I are trying on dresses when we're done. But I'll see you tomorrow!" Claire waved brightly and Massie shut her locker and grabbed her other hand pulling her down the hall.

"Bye Cammie!" Massie said, smirk firmly back in place. Cam felt like he had just lost an important battle.

When he woke up from a nap later with two missed calls from Claire and a text that just said "I'm sorry," Cam felt his stomach drop.

His other notification was from Instagram; Massie had tagged him in a story. He opened the app to a selfie of Massie and his girlfriend kissing in Massie's Rover. The one word caption stamped across the bottom in a neon font said it all.

Duh.
