Chapter 14: The Promise.

Mason stood in front of Lilith's door. He had been fighting to pick up the courage to confront his former mentor. Should I be doing this? he thought. I mean she has made my life a living hell. He thought of every single thing she did to him: forcing him to balance himself on the battlements of the castle while keeping up a barrier to avoid getting hit by rocks, standing in an extreme weather room and having to use magic to maintain body heat, and of course all the sparring matches which usually ended with him going to the healers coven and staying there for a couple days to a week.

Mason heard the distinct sound of glass smashing against stone. He knew the sound of a tantrum in the progress from personal experience. Mason was emboldened by Lilith's vulnerability. We're not that different after all.

Mason knocked on the door and the room went silent.

"Who is it!?" Lilith shouted through the door.

"Lilith, can I come in?"

Mason received no answer at first, but, a few moments later the door was flung open.

"What do you want? Come to gloat?" Lilith glared at Mason and she half expected him to say something smart but was surprised when he just looked at her with a new feeling behind his eyes. She could swear it was… pity. "Why are you looking at me like that?"

"Can I come in? we need to talk." Mason waited for her to either slam the door in his face or move to allow him inside.

"What happened to you? Did you do something that you need me to bail you out of… again?" Lilith eyes flashed daggers, surveying her apprentice to see why he would want to enter her room "Or have you come to kill me and finally take my job?"

"No. None of that. I just want to talk," Mason said, not making any threatening gestures.

"Okay then, you can come in. But no funny business." Lilith moved out of Mason's way and gestured for him to enter he.

Mason saw that the room had little in the way of decoration. A king sized bed, a drawer with a mirror attached, and a small nightstand with a couple framed pictures.

"Now what did you want to talk about?" Lilith asked walking toward her bed and sitting down.

Mason walked toward her and looked at the spot on the bed next to her, "May I?"

Lilith studied the boy once again, "Of course, but don't try anything."

Mason sat down next to Lilith, he let out a sigh and looked up at her. "It's about your sister."

"What about her!?" Lilith snapped, grinding her teeth at Mason.

"Lilith yesterday when you captured Eda. I was in Eda's body. I know everything. I know what you told her."

Lilith's eyes went wide and she let out a small growl "So, that's it then. You're gonna rat me out to the Emperor for blowing your cover?"

"Lilith?" Mason began he had a question on his mind that has been with him for a week. "why did you save me?"

"What? I didn't save you?"

"You did. You could've left me for dead back when the demon hunters beat me to pulp. Why."

"Because, the emperor would know that I left you to die if I didn't."

"why did you stay the night with me, then?"

"I-i don't know what you're talking about."

"the nurse told me… that you stayed with me all night while I was unconscious. You comforted me and help me feel safe when I was near death, why."

Lilith blushed and was visibily shaken. "I-i don't have to answer this. I'm just going to be turned to stone when you tell the emperor–"

"No, the Emperor won't hear a word of this from me."

Lilith was taken aback by what her 'apprentice' had just said.

"I want to help you get your sister back."

"And why should I believe you?" She asked, "You have been nothing but a flippant, disrespectful brat since I took you under my wing."

"And you have made my life here in the isles hell. Your training left scars that will never heal. But, none of that matters. I don't want you to make the worst mistake of your life."

"What makes you think that you know anything about me and my sister's relationship?"

"Because… when I lost my sister. It was the worst mistake of my life. I will never forgive myself for what happened to her."

"What happened to her?"

Mason held his hands together. He shook uncontrollably. "I was four when it happened. My mom had just given my sister a new car for her birthday. Andria was prepping for college because she had gotten a track scholarship. I was upset I was tired of feeling like I was second best. It had been this way since I was three when I realized that my mom favored Andria. So, I took her keys and flushed them. Then in order to get replacements she would have to go to the dealer to get the molds for the locksmith. But she had to take the family car which was on it's last leg. On the way the brakes failed and she was hit by a semi-truck. The morgue called my parents to identify her body and they could barely recognize her. It wasn't long before my mom left the house and told me that I was a loser, that it should've been me who died. I had lost two members of my family. I miss her and I wish that I could have given my life for hers. She was too good for a sibling like me."

Lilith's eyes softened and she reached out her hand for Mason. Placing it on his shoulder. "I know how you feel. Blaming yourself for doing something terrible to your family. C-can I tell you a secret?"

"Yes Lilith, you can."

"I cursed my sister. It's my fault Eda has to deal with this burden. It has been eating away at me since I first joined the Emperor's Coven. I was just so tired of her being better then me. She was always a gifted prodigy in magic. Where as I had to work for every little advance in magic. In my jealously I did something rash."

"Lilith…"

"No, I don't want to hear it! I know I'm a monster and don't deserve happiness. I can't even face the sister who I hurt. It's my fault, it's all my fault!" Lilith began crying tears covering her mouth with her hand.

"Lilith!" Mason exclaimed grabbing her into a hug.

Lilith fought against his grip.

"It's okay. That's why I'm here. What you told me doesn't make me hate you. It just tells me that I need to work harder to make sure that you can save your sister. I promise you Lilith that from this day forward I'm gonna help you anyway I can. I'm going to get you and your sister back together. I won't let you make my mistake. But you have to promise me you won't give up. Do you promise me?"

Lilith looked at her apprentice as he wiped a tear from her cheek "I-i promise and thank you Mason."

Just then a loud banging could be heard on door.

"Ms. Clawthorne I must insist that you open the door and let me speak with Mason. I have a new command from his majesty Emperor Belos," Kikimora's voice called out from behind the door.

"You'd think that such a little creature couldn't make that much noise," Mason quipped, smiling.

Lilith suppressed a chuckle with her hand, "trust me, wait until you see her when she is really angry. This is nothing."

"Oh, did prissy perfect Lilith just make a mean spirited jab at someone who isn't me, You're losing it old woman." Mason lightly tapped Lilith's arm with his fist.

"I guess that's what comes from having to deal with a disrespectful student like you. You've run me up the walls."

The duo laughed until they were about to pass out.

"Ms. Clawthorne!? I demand you open this door, immediately!" Kikimora shouted.

"Better let her in. We don't want her to break down the door," Mason said.

"Agreed." Lilith did a small spell circle and the door unlocked, opening to reveal a steaming Kikimora.

"Thank you ," Kikimora said before Looking at Mason, "I see you are deciding to grace the Head of the Emperor's Coven with your presence. Please, make sure to try and give her some advice on how a proper servant of the Emperor is supposed to act."

Lilith began to growl but managed to compose herself, "Why are you here Kikimora?"

"Emperor Belos has decreed that Mason is to begin spying on the Owl Lady's apprentice as well."

"Really? Why does Emperor Belos care about a powerless human?" Lilith asked, confused.

"That is for him to know. All you have to worry about is the arrangement to make sure that whatever track she takes in Hexside, Mason is to be there as well."

"She's going to Hexside? How did that happen?"

"Next semester she will be entering the curriculum or that is what the oracles have foretold." Kikimora once again looked at Mason, "you will need to come with me so you can debrief the Emperor on all that you know of her currently."

"Sure thing." Mason got up to leave but before he did he looked back "it's okay Lilith, I won't rest until your sister is cured and you have your family back." Mason exited the room and when the door closed he did not hear Lilith talking to herself.

The witch had a lot of doubt in her heart on the one hand it was comforting to have someone to talk too. But, what if he was just using her. What if he tells Edalyn what she had done. Lilith was conflicted she decided that she would watch Mason. If he betrays me I will kill him. But, he did seem sincere, I hope he doesn't force me to kill him, but, if it is between him and Edalyn then I know where I stand.

Author's note: hey guys, short chapter today, sorry about that but I kinda wanted to devote this one to the development of Mason's and Lilith's relationship. Those are ones where we skip the events of the episode and let Luz have her own solo adventures. There will be a couple more like this. I am planning on using Mason to try and redeem Lilith and maybe, just maybe she can do the same for him. I want Lilith to have in Mason what Eda has in Luz. But you know how things go in the story and we all saw episode 18 what will that do to this budding familial relationship. Guess you'll have to keep reading to find out. Oh and btw merry christmas and happy holidays.
