Chapter 2

"Come back! Come back! Aah he ain't coming back." The African American man said,

"Looks like they were heading to the evac center at the mall." Said the younger man wearing the trucker hat said,

"Gotta agree, let's follow them to the mall." The three men were nearly startled when they finally noticed the women standing there,

"Woah... How long have you guys been there?" The gentleman in the hat asked,

"Long enough to see our hopes and dreams fly away." Hannah said,

"We were heading to the evac center in the mall, three more couldn't hurt." The African American man said,

"We better arm ourselves, we don't know what could be waiting for us out there." Hannah grabbed an axe off the table, "Nice." She twirled it in her hands,

"Hold on sweetheart, maybe you should try something a little smaller." The man in the suit said condescendingly as he held out a bat to her.

She looked at the bat, then up at him, "How about you take that bat and your condescending remarks and shove them up your-"

"Hey now..." Lisett cut her friend off, "Lets not start off on the wrong foot, I mean, we only just met each other." Hannah glared at the man, who smirked back at her. Lisett pulled her friend away, "Hannah, we can't just start fights with people we don't know."

"Why the fuck not? I do it all the time."

"This isn't your normal Friday night bar rampage okay, we need to stick together to get the hell out of here, even if we're sticking with a group of assholes."

"I mean we don't have to stick with them."

"We do if we want to get out of this alive, I know you liked to skip math class but six people is better than two."

Hannah made a face of defeat before sighing, "Alright fine, but one more remark out of that asshole and I won't hesitate to use this axe on him instead."

"Don't worry, it's just a hop, skip and a jump and we'll be there in no time."

After everyone gathered their bearings and geared up they headed back into the building, "Is it a good idea to be going back into a burning building?" Lisett asked,

"Well, we either go back in and find a way out or we stay on the roof and inevitably die." Hannah remarked. The group stopped at the door at the bottom of the stairs, "Well, let's see what's behind door number one..." Hannah grabbed the knob and swung the door open. In the hallway there were people standing around, but they didn't look like normal people.

Their skin was paler than the moon, and some of them had red stuff dripping from their lips, "Holy shit... They're-"

"Vampires!" Hannah finished Lisetts sentence.

Lisett gave her a look, "They're zombies!"

"I know that..."

"Look out!" The man in the suit shot one that charged the group.

The blood splattered all over the carpeting and on the wall, "Cool..." Hannah wanted to kill one, they had to if they wanted out of there, but she wasn't sure if she could. They were humans after all, real living beings... But they were also zombies, something she had only seen in a video game. She didn't have time to waste as one charged at her, she swung back, and brought the axe forward, taking the head clean off of the zombie. She paused for a second, "Oh yeah... I could get used to this."

The group cleared the way and headed into a large conference room. On the table were maps, maps with big red X's and places circled but crossed out. Hannah and Lisett looked at the map, "Woah..." Hannah said,

"This is bad." Lisett agreed,

"What is it?" The woman asked and came over to check it out,

"Evacs that didn't hold out..." Most of the red ink covered big cities in the state,

"We better get to that mall quick." The man in the hat said.

Before they could get out of the room something grabbed a hold of the man in the suit and pulled him away, he screamed, "Something's got me!"

"Oh shit!" Hannah grabbed his gun off of the floor, she aimed it at the zombie, "Oh god, please don't hit him..." She said to herself as she took a breath and pulled the trigger. The zombie exploded into a plume of green smoke and the body fell to the floor, she rushed over to him, "You okay?" She held out a hand for him,

"Yeah... Thanks." He grabbed her hand and she pulled him up. They looked at each other like they were going to have a moment, but both of them simultaneously caught a whiff of the nasty smoke from the zombie and began to cough,

"Shit..." Hannah said before they both moved away from the green cloud. The others grouped up with them, "Oh, here's your gun back." Hannah handed the man his gun back,

"Thanks, hey you're a pretty good shot."

Hannah blushed, "Oh thank you I..."

Lisett watched her friend blush as she talked to him, "Unbelievable."

"What is?" The man in the hat asked,

"Not 20 minutes ago she was gonna fight him and now she's flirting with him!"

"Well maybe they're trying to have a conversation..." They both looked over,

"Nah that's definitely flirting." Lisett confirmed,

"Cmon people, let's get a move on." The big man said.

The group rounded the corner and were approaching a barricade when suddenly there was an explosion, they stepped back, "Damn, this place is burning up quick!" Lisett yelled over the noise,

"Through here!" The lady led them through the housekeeping closet,

"It's a dead end." Hannah said,

"No its not." The lady shot the window out, "This way."

"O-on the ledge?" Hannah stepped back,

"It's our only way out of here."

"I mean we can find another way out."

"Sure if we want to burn up in the hotel."

"What's the problem?" The big man asked,

"She's afraid of heights... Hannah, we have to take the ledge, it'll be okay." Lisett said,

"No it wont! It absolutely will not be okay." Hannah mimicked her friend.

Lisett sighed, "Do I need to carry you out of here kicking and screaming?"

"No, because you can't..." Lisett got behind her friend and started shoving her, "What are you doing?!"

"I'm not going to die because you're a child and I'm not leaving you behind. Now get your ass on that ledge!" She pushed Hannah to the window,

"Dammit Lisett!" The rest of the group watched the two girls bicker, they weren't daring to get in the middle of it. Hannah used her hands and feet to stop her from being pushed out the window, "Li..sett... Quit it!"

"No! Just... Get out... The damn window!" Lisett struggled,

"Never!"

"Fine!" Lisett stopped and took a step back. Hannah laughed and also stepped back, "You're a real pain in my ass..." Lisett said,

"Yeah well you're... You..." Hannah tried to think of a comeback, "Well you're short."

"Nice one..." Lisett rolled her eyes, "You know, we can't stay here fore-" Lisett took this moment while her friend was off her guard and shoulder rammed Hannah out the window,

"Lisett! Fuck! Shit!" She backed away from the ledge.

Lisett and the others came out of the window, "It'll be okay. Take my hand." Lisett said as she held her hand out to her friend,

"What if I fall and die!"

"You're not gonna fall and die, trust me, just don't look down." Hannah reluctantly took her friends hand and got up, "C'mon, we can get back in through there." Lisett pointed to a window at the very end of the ledge that led into a room. The group shimmied down the ledge, careful not to fall off. They were almost to the window when a zombie broke through the window of the room next to it and grabbed Lisett, "Shit!" She exclaimed, almost stumbling over the edge.

Hannah killed the zombie as the man in the hat grabbed Lisett before she could fall. The two made eye contact, "Thanks for catching me." Lisett smiled,

"Yeah... no problem." He smiled back,

"Hey! You two should kiss!" Hannah joked as the man in the suit laughed along with her.

Lisett gave her a look, "Hey Hannah, look how high up we are." Hannah's smile quickly faded and her face turned pale, "That's what I thought." Lisett smirked,

"Let's get off of this ledge." The other woman said, shooting out the window and getting into the hotel room.

The group cut through the room and back into the hallway, "There's the stairs." The man in the suit said, opening the door to the staircase. They killed the zombies in the staircase before opening the door to the next floor.

Much to their surprise, there were no zombies in sight, "This is a little suspicious." Hannah said as they entered the hallway. A few came running out of the rooms but were quickly taken down by the group.

Lisett and Hannah went ahead to check out a maids cart that was sitting in the hallway, "Check it out." Lisett said, grabbing a bottle of pills off of the cart,

"What is it?"

"It's a bottle of pills."

"What kind of pills?"

Lisett looked over the label but it had some kind of unpronounceable name, "Uh... I'm not sure, it's got some kind of crazy name."

Hannah took a look at it but had no more luck trying to figure it out than her friend did, "Let's take it with us, it might come in handy." She handed the bottle back to Lisett,

"We can't do that, what if these are some kind of drug that makes us hallucinate?!"

"Then what a way to go right?" Lisett rolled her eyes and reluctantly stashed the bottle in her bag. The two girls were about to head back to the group when a fire broke out from one of the doors, "Shit!" Hannah said as the girls jumped back before they could get burned,

"You guys alright?" The other woman asked from the other side of the fire wall,

"Yeah, we're fine." Lisett confirmed,

"You guys be careful, we're gonna find another way around." The big man said,

"Okay." Hannah turned to her friend, "C'mon, let's see what's ahead. We can at least clear the way for them."

"Good idea." Lisett agreed,

"I know, I'm full of them."

"Full of hot air is more like it." Lisett rolled her eyes.

The two girls proceeded ahead to the janitors closet. They killed a couple of zombies before checking out what was in the room, "Holy shit, those psychos are on the ledge again!" Hannah said as she looked out the window,

"Move, I can break it out for them to get back in." Hannah stepped out of Lisett way as she broke the window.

While Lisett was busy Hannah stepped back into the hallway where she heard a screech, "What the hell was that?" Before she could even process what she had heard, something pounced on her, "Shit!" She screamed out, "Lisett get it off of me!" The zombie reached back and scratched her in the face, causing blood to spray on the wall next to them. Before it could go in for another swipe at its victim a spray of blood erupted all over Hannah and the zombie fell dead on top of her. Hannah shoved the body off of her, "This is fucking bullshit!" She said as she got up,

"Oh my god, are you okay?" Lisett asked,

"I'm fine..."

"You sure? Because your face looks like shit." The man in the suit said.

Hannah put her hand up to her face, when she pulled it away her palm was covered in blood, "Shit! I'm not gonna turn into one of them am I?"

"I think youre gonna be fine, here." Lisett grabbed a first aid kit out of her bag. She dabbed a rag with some rubbing alcohol, "This might sting a bit." She touched it on Hannah's wound. Hannah winced for a second but waited for Lisett to finish, "There." Lisett put the bandage on it,

"Thanks..." Hannah muttered,

"C'mon, lets get the hell out of here." Lisett grabbed her gun off of the floor. They headed to the end of the hall that opened up to a lounge, the path to the right was blocked.

The man in the suit looked around, "It looks like this elevators still working." "The elevator? Seriously?" Lisett asked,

"Would you rather take the window down?" Hannah suggested, Lisett didn't give an answer, "Elevator it is then." They piled into the elevator and hit the down button.

The elevator started to move, "Holy shit! This is some kind of nightmare. Goddamn Zombie Apocalypse and shit. Shit, shit, shit. What in the hell are we going to do?" The man in the hat said,

"Settle down, son. We're going to be okay. What's your name?" The big guy asked,

"Ellis, my names Ellis."

"Hey, names Rochelle, you?"

"Name's Nick, but don't bother learning it 'cause I ain't sticking around long."

"Let's stay together for a little while longer at least. Okay, Nick?"

They looked at the two girls hanging in the back of the elevator, "Oh... I'm Hannah."

"Lisett." The two girls greeted,

"Coach." The big guy confirmed,

"What kind of name is Hannah?" Nick smirked,

"At least its not a basic bitch name like Nick?" Hannah shot back.

Before Nick could say anything, the elevator screeched to a stop, "Alright, we're all friends now. Get ready." He said instead.

Ellis and Coach pried the doors open, causing the elevator to fill up with smoke, "Shit." Hannah coughed. Before anyone could say anything there was a roar in the distance,

"Get ready." Ellis said. The zombies started running to the group, some of them running through the flames along the way and burning up before getting there, but then some zombies emerged from the flames, completely unscathed,

"Are those zombies... Fireproof?!" Hannah asked in disbelief,

"That's some crazy shit." Coach said before shooting at the zombies.

While the group was fighting the horde Hannah happened to look down and saw a small machine gun laying on the floor, "Neat..." She picked it up, "Lisett look! I've got a gun!" She pointed it toward the horde, spraying bullets at the zombies.

Finally there were no more zombies coming after them, "Where the hell did you learn to shoot a machine gun?" Lisett asked,

"Bottom floor of a burning hotel... Like 10 seconds ago." Hannah shrugged,

"Well." Lisett sighed, "The idea of you possessing a gun absolutely terrifies me, but you are a good shot... So you can keep it."

"Wooooow, thanks mom." Hannah said sarcastically with an eye roll.

The gang proceeded further down the hall and checked out a side room for supplies. Ellis grabbed a shotgun off of a table and some shells that were sitting next to it, "Cool." He smirked,

"What did ya find?" Lisett asked as she packed up a couple of first aid kits,

"Just a shotgun and some ammo... You ever shoot one before?"

"A shotgun? I don't think so."

"Maybe I'll have to show ya sometime." The two exchanged a smile, but Lisett's smile quickly faded when she caught her friend smirking at her from across the room,

"Do you mind?" Lisett asked,

"No, I don't mind at all." Ellis left the room. The two girls waited until he was out of the room, "You so like him." Hannah finally said,

"I do not! I just met him, I cant like someone i just met like 15 minutes ago."

"Sure you can."

"Are you saying you like Nick?" Lisett smirked,

"I mean he's cute but he gets on my nerves." Hannah shrugged,

"C'mon ladies, let's get the hell out of here." Nick interrupted, the two friends dropped their conversation and joined back up with the others.

The survivors headed back down the hallway and into a kitchen, "We'll have to climb around the countertop to get out." Rochelle said,

"I mean we don't have to..." Hannah said,

"Not unless you want to burn to death." Lisett said,

"It'll be a nice cooked meal for the zombies..." Lisett gave her friend a look of disapproval, "What?" Lisett said nothing as she hopped over the counter, Hannah joined behind her.

Coach opened the door into an open ballroom area, all around the room was burning luggage and zombies running through fire to get to the group, "This smoke is so thick! I can't see a thing!" Lisett coughed,

"Stay close and follow me." Coach said as he led the group through the only path that was clear enough to pass through.

Lisett heard a screech through the sound of the crackling of the fire, "Did you guys hear that?" Before anyone could answer a ball of green goo was shot at them, "Hit the deck!" Hannah exclaimed as everyone dove to the floor. The green goo landed next to them and sizzled as it burned a hole in what was left of the carpet. Hannah looked up to see a long necked zombie lumbering towards them, "What the hell is that thing?!" She exclaimed as Nick shot it dead,

"Whatever it is, its dead now." He said as he got up,

"Well... Re-dead." Hannah said. The group gathered their bearings and walked over to the dead zombie, "Ew..." Hannah said as she examined it,

"What the hell did it spit at us?" Rochelle asked,

"By the looks of it, it looks like some kind of acid spit." Hannah said,

"We'll have to keep a look out for that one." Coach said as they walked out of the ballroom and into the lobby of the hotel.

Hannah took a deep breath, "Fresh air!"

"Look, there's a safe room ahead!" Rochelle pointed out,

"Thank god!" Hannah exclaimed before running ahead,

"Hannah wait!" Lisett stopped her friend,

"What?"

"You can't just run out in the open like that! What if you get attacked?"

Hannah rolled her eyes, "Lisett I have a gun, I'll be fine."

"Okay, and what happens when you run out of ammo?"

"Uh, I use the axe, duh."

"You are gonna get yourself killed, you never think before you act."

"Lisett, in the time that it took for you to nag at me, we could have been in that safe room already." Hannah proceeded ahead anyway and the others followed behind, not saying a single word to the girls about their bickering.

The group split off in the lobby to check for any supplies that may have been missed, Ellis and Nick were off to the right behind the concierge desk, "So, this is some crazy shit we're in huh?" Ellis started, trying to make small talk,

"Look, I'm not trying to be anyone's buddy okay? I'm just trying to stay alive so I can get the hell out of here like everyone else." Nick said, Ellis kept his mouth shut the rest of the time they were searching.

Meanwhile Hannah and Coach were making sure the others were safe while they searched, "You know, your friend has a point." Coach said to her, "We need to stick together if we want to survive."

"I know..." Hannah said, "It's just, I hate having people on my back about everything, it drives me nuts! Like, for once just let me do me, that's why I went to college so far from home. I just wanted to be my own person is all."

Coach shot a zombie that was coming towards them, "Well I ain't gonna tell you you cant be your own person, just try not to get yourself killed while doing it."

"Yeah... I'll try not to." The group finished their search and headed into the safe room, without much more being said.
