Chuck sat in the fluffy chairs outside of Roan's office with his arms crossed. He was miserable. He could hear the yelling inside the office. He didn't mean to cause trouble. And yet trouble seemed to follow him. Much more than the other angels.

"It was an honest mistake!" Ellie was saying, "It could have happened to anyone!"

"Anyone?" Cole scoffed, "He let agents of darkness into Heaven because he figured everyone should be allowed here. In the first hour, they staged a coup and tried to overthrow Heaven!"

"He just wants everyone to be happy, " Ellie huffed, "Okay, so he can't be a gatekeeper. "

"I just don't know what to do with him, " Roan sighed, glancing between Ellie and Cole, "I mean, we've tried everything."

"You've tried the growth division?" Cole asked.

"He thought it was fun to grow things and overran an entire city with spaghetti squash, " Roan sighed, "It took the townspeople weeks to clear it away. Hundreds upon hundreds of spaghetti squash…at least no one went hungry that winter. "

"How about the season division?" Ellie asked.

"He thought every day should be sunny, bright and hot. He caused a heat wave that lasted 300 days and killed all the crops in the eastern division… unfortunately, that was before the squash incident and everyone went hungry that winter, " Roan sighed deeply, "We've also tried him in the weather, the sky, the animal welfare, and the tree growth divisions. "

"I remember when he was in the animal welfare division, "Cole chuckled, "He overproduced the frogs because he thought they were cool. There are still remnants of that disaster. "

"He means well, " Ellie said slowly, glancing out the window at the curly haired boy, still sitting in the chair, "He's got such a pure heart…surely there must be a job somewhere that would be suitable for him. "

"They call him the Jinx Angel!" Cole laughed, "There's nowhere that's suitable for him. "

"The problem is, " Roan stated, ignoring Cole's last comment, "He has no common sense. "

"How is it that he has no common sense but has such a pure heart?" Ellie asked, surprised.

"He died as a child, " Roan said, "He was very young. He didn't have a chance to be taught morals or experience things. He doesn't understand what humans need to survive. He never knew love. "

Cole wrinkled his nose, "How could he not know love?"

"His parents abandoned him, " Roan said, "He was passed from family to family. The last man he lived with disappeared. And then Chuck died. He has never known love and he just doesn't understand what it is that's required of him to do good for the humans. "

"How did he die?" Ellie asked slowly.

"By accident, " Roan said solemnly, "He was hit by a wayward bullet. Just in a bad neighborhood at the wrong time. He was alone at the time. Nobody even realized the mistake. He was so young that he has no memories of the incident. He thinks he's always been here. "

Ellie sniffed back a tear.

"Well, he's not a child now!" Cole exclaimed, "He's had tons of time to learn!"

Ellie studied Chuck's forlorn face again, "Then maybe we need to teach him, " she said slowly, "We could send him on a Cupid mission. "

"ARE YOU NUTS?" Cole stood up, slamming his fists on the table, "He would have people falling madly in love with lamp posts and stuff like that! That's the stupidest idea I've ever heard!"

Roan was tapping his fingers on the table, contemplating.

"With a mentor, " he said slowly, "We'll choose a pair of friends or something and send him with a more experienced angel. "

"You're playing with fire, old man, " Cole warned, "It's bad enough to let him mess with weather or growth…now you're letting him play with human emotion. He's called the Jinx Angel for a reason!"

"With a mentor!" Roan reminded.

"There's not a mentor in Heaven that could teach that moron about human life and love!" Cole snapped.

Ellie watched as Chuck cringed outside the window. His head lowered.

"He can hear you, " Ellie scolded, "Cole, I wonder if you should be the one learning things from a more experienced angel! You have no tact at all!"

Ignoring Cole's protests, Ellie pulled out a big book, glancing through available missions to see if she could find a suitable one.

"Aha!" she announced triumphantly, "This one right here!"

The men leaned into the table, trying to read Ellie's handwriting. Failing miserably, they both leaned back and waited for her to explain it to them.

"Sarah Walker, aged 22. She's a runaway heiress. Anna Wu, also aged 22. She was hired as a maid at the mansion Sarah ran away from when her mother retired. They're best friends. And they've recently run into some trouble. They moved to Burbank about two days ago. Both girls are in the process of getting jobs and a place to live. "

"So why do they need angels?" Cole asked.

"Sarah is afraid to let anyone near her, " Ellie said, "Although she grew up in a mansion, she also grew up not knowing love. Her mother died when she was very young. Her father pushed her away and basically let the maids raise her. Anna is the daughter of one of those maids. In turn, Anna hasn't allowed anyone close to her either. All they have is each other. "

"I don't get it, " Cole said, "Poor little rich girl. Sorry – but I find it hard to feel sorry for her. You think shooting her in the butt with a Cupid's Arrow is going to solve everything for her?"

Roan snickered. Leave it to Cole to be blunt about the situation.

"No!" Ellie snapped, "I think if Chuck and a partner can get these girls some semblance of a happy life, then he'll learn what it is to be human! And she's not just some poor little rich girl. There's a lot more to her story than meets the eye. "

Both men sat back, contemplating her proposal.

"Who would we get to go with him?" Roan asked.

Ellie's eyes lit up, "Glad you asked! I have the perfect person!"

She flipped open her book of Angel Agents, turning the pages until she found the one, she was looking for.

"Tyler Martin?" Cole exclaimed, "Have you fallen out of a cloud and bonked your head? That's a disaster waiting to happen!"

All three of them knew Tyler and Chuck didn't get along so well. Tyler could be very…mean to Chuck, often calling him horrible names and laughing at his every mistake…and there were lots of mistakes.

"Tyler needs to grow up too, " Ellie stated, "Where Chuck has a pure heart, Tyler is a bit of...well, he's a jerk. He's cold to everyone he meets. Still, he's had ample experience in these missions. Maybe not Cupid, but human intervention. It might give them both a chance to figure out how to work together and they could both learn something in the process. "

"I'm against it, " Cole stated, "If those girls are messed up now, just wait until Pea-Brain and Buttface get ahold of them. You'll ruin them for life. "

"No, " Roan said slowly, "I think this could work. "

"Sir, " Cole said, warning edging in his voice, "Really think about what you're considering. "

"My boy, " Roan said, eyeing his agent, "The Cypher division of Heaven is responsible for keeping Earth land happy and functioning. And we do a good job of it. But there should be a division looking after our people too. Both Tyler and Chuck have seen more pain and sadness than any one person should see. Tyler is cold and uncaring at times. Chuck doesn't have a clue about anything. If a mission like this has a chance of making those two boys understand what happiness is, I'm going to agree with it. "

Cole stood up and headed for the door, "Don't say I didn't warn you, " he muttered, exiting the office with a slam.

Tyler slammed his hands down on the table, "No!"

Roan was unamused with Tyler's outright defiance, "It's not up for discussion. "

"But my Seasons Unit! Spring is about to turn into summer! I have trees to give fruit to and water to warm for swimming! You'll disappoint millions of Earth landers!" Tyler protested.

"As if someone else can't do that, " Ellie rolled her eyes. Then she said firmly, "What's the real reason, Tyler?"

"I don't want to go on a mission with him!" Tyler snapped, pointing angrily at the forlorn boy beside him.

Chuck looked at his feet as Tyler continued on his rampage.

"He screws up everything he does!" Tyler yelled, "And we're not messing with something that can be corrected…these are human lives we'd be toying with!"

"You sound like Cole, " Ellie commented, filing her finger nails nonchalantly.

Roan learned forward, grabbing Tyler by his ear, "Come with me, you whiny brat!"

He dragged Tyler out of the office by his ear.

Chuck continued to look at his feet.

"He doesn't mean it, " Ellie said softly, noting the broken look on Chuck's face.

"Yes, he does, " Chuck said, "I'm the Jinx Angel. I'm a screw up. Just like he said. There's no place for me here. I screw up everything I do. "

"Chuck, " Ellie leaned forward, taking Chuck's hand in her own, "It's going to be okay. I have never met anyone as sweet and innocent as you are. You have so much to offer. You just need to learn boundaries and self-restraint. This mission will make you look at Sarah and Anna's hearts and see what they need. I'm willing to bet it's something only you can do. "

Chuck lifted his gaze slightly, eyeing the pretty whitehaired woman, "You really think so?"

She nodded, squeezing his hand, "I really think so. "

Roan returned, only letting go of Tyler's ear once they were inside the office again.

"I'm looking forward to this mission, " Tyler stated in a monotone voice. The icy look in his eyes said otherwise, but Chuck tried not to let it bug him.

"Good, " Roan said, "Then check this out. "

He tapped a button on the desk, a vision of an apartment popping up on the Zork-vision, "This is apartment 2-B. Your apartment. Anna and Sarah have apartment 2-C. Your mission is to get to know them, gain their trust, then give them the confidence they need to find happiness. Got it?"

Chuck nodded. Beside him, Tyler let out a less than enthusiastic, "Woo hoo. "

"One more thing, " he nodded and instantly Chuck and Tyler were dressed in human clothes – jeans and a t-shirt. Tyler wore a t-shirt with black jeans and boots. Chuck's t-shirt was blue with blue jeans and converse all stars.

"I hate human clothes, " Tyler muttered, "They're so restricting."

Ellie stifled a laugh. In Heaven, the men wore loin clothes and the ladies wore white dresses. Having been on Earth land missions a few times herself, she understood his disgust.

"Okay then, " Roan hit a button. A door opened, the apartment on the other side of it, "Good luck boys. I'll be sending a supervisor to check on you. "

Tyler went through the door without looking back.

"Chuck, " Ellie caught Chuck's arm, pulling him back slightly, "Don't be afraid to show your feelings. Don't let Tyler run all over you. "

Chuck nodded hesitantly, then stepped into the door, which disappeared from the office in a blaze of light.

"I really hope this won't end badly, " Roan commented, sighing heavily.

"I think it'll be okay, " Ellie said, patting his toupee on top of his bald head, much to his annoyance, "Something tells me it'll be just fine. "
