ARKHAM ASYLUM

Dr. Hugo Strange had worked at Arkham Asylum for thirty years. For those thirty years he had studied some of the most unique and strange minds he had ever encountered. That was what made Gotham City so special.

It was a city that spat out the most insane and colorful individuals. Whether it be a psychotic murdering clown or a monstrous underground human penguin, Gotham had it all. He had never had the opportunity to study those two in particular but he had studied many others through the years.

His passion and obsession was studying and understanding dual personalities. For his entire duration at Arkham Asylum he had always searched for the crown jewel of dual personalities but had never found the one he was looking for. The one man whose head he really wanted to delve into had disappeared fifteen years ago and the reality that he'd never get the opportunity to study and probe into the mind of the man had been the cause of Hugo's depression for many years.

The man in question that intrigued him so much happened to dress like a bat and had spent years bringing justice to the streets of Gotham. The world only knew him as the Batman. Insane and sane criminals alike would shudder at the mention of Batman.

Hugo's depression was a distant memory as he strove to find a way to bring Batman back out into the light. He had been working on a project recently that he was sure would inspire the vigilante to once more put on his cape and cowl.

Hugo stopped in front of a mirror and examined himself. He wore a spotless white coat, circular glasses, and had a shiny bald head that would reflect light. He took great pride in his appearance and felt very impressed with himself as a man closely approaching sixty.

A female attendant in a short white dress stepped out of a nearby room. She looked rattled, "Dr. Strange, he's been asking for you."

Hugo nodded and without saying a word he entered the room the attendant had just exited. It was very dark in the room. A storm raged outside the window and brief flashes of lightning illuminated the room.

In the center of the room was a small table and at the end sat a man restrained in a white straight jacket whose face was covered in shadow. Hugo confidently walked to the table and sat across from the man.

"Good evening, Dr. Strange."

"I see you've finally started speaking", Hugo observed. "That's very good. I was beginning to think you were a lost cause."

The man chuckled ominously, "Far from it."

"So you wish to speak with me. Here I am."

"I wanted to thank you personally. That's all."

"Thank me for what?" Hugo asked.

"For helping me to awaken to who I really am, of course," the man chuckled quietly.

Hugo's eyebrows rose in curiosity, "And who have I helped awaken?"

A flash of lightning lit up the room as the man leaned forward. He appeared to be in his mid to late thirties and he had chalk white skin with bright green hair.

"You can call me, The Joker."

The man calling himself The Joker erupted into hysterical laughter. Hugo studied the man closely and then he couldn't resist any longer. He gave the laughing man a big toothy grin.

"Well Mr. Joker, we have a lot to talk about."
