Chapter 1

Five years since she took the name Fleet, five years since she gave up teaching. They had been trying for a baby for the past three years and nothing, Rachel felt alone and desperately wanted a baby and something to call hers.

For the third week consecutively, Rachel found herself on her sofa, at her Manchester home she shared with Adam, cradling a glass of Rochdale's finest red wine as she scrolled through Facebook. Rachel had left the teaching profession on the advice of Adam after she was 'too involved' with it, she worked in an office 9 to 5 as a social worker assistant, putting herself down knowing that's all she was good enough for. Adam worked late as a chef and so the weekends was only the time they got together, that's when Adam wasn't working every other weekend. Rachel let out a huge sigh coming across Adam's profile on her screen.

The picture she saw in front of her, was the picture she knew was being posted. Over the past three weeks when her and Adam had been together, they've argued after Rachel saw a text come through on his phone. The picture showed one of his waitresses, she knew well, hugging Adam sideways with both their hands on her tummy. Adam came clean 3 nights ago that she was pregnant with his baby and Rachel was lost.

Adam had forced Rachel to cut ties with all her old teaching friends, meaning she literally had no one. Mel would text her now and again but she really wasn't concerned for her welfare, and friends in the office? Yeah there was a few but none she could call on a night like tonight. She knew the only thing she could speak too was the glass of red in front of her.

Her previous deputy Chris now worked in social services with Rachel and was the only person she could really call a friend, although they were not close they texted every so often and spoke when they passed in the office.

Rachel knew who she needed and decided to pick up the courage and text Chris.

Hi Chris, sorry it's late at night, I just wondered if you still had Kim's number, I know it's been a while since I last spoke to her but I feel I need this. Hope you and the kids are doing okay xx

Within a few moments a text had come back making her phone buzz.

Hi Rachel, yeah definitely I'll dig it out and send it over in a min, yeah kids and wife doing fine, can't believe little poppy is 4 tomorrow time flies! Xx

Rachel smiled subconsciously placing a hand on her tummy knowing it was empty. Chris had sent her the number, he had two children poppy nearly 4 and David just turned 1. Happily married Chris was settled so well.

As Rachel's thumb hovered over the green ring button of her mobile she took a deep breath as she pressed it.
