They make it to Jay's apartment and she helps him wobble up the stairs, ignoring the way her heart speeds up with the contact. She settles him on the couch and then she awkwardly lingers in his living room, unsure of what to do now. He quirks an eyebrow up in amusement at her obvious discomfort before patting the couch and motioning for her to sit. She perches herself on the opposite end, tucking her legs up against her chest and hating the way she's on edge. Today was a lot, on multiple levels and she hasn't quite processed all of her emotions. Jay watches her with soft eyes as she tugs at a string on her jeans and when she meets his stare he sends her a smile.

"What?"

She asks, feeling slightly embarrassed under his gaze. His smile broadens and she fights back a flush from her cheeks.

"Nothing."

He shakes his head briefly, brushing her question off and it does nothing to settle her nerves. They fall into a silence for a moment until Jay's stomach lets out a protest of hunger. Hailey can't help but chuckle at the noise and feels herself relaxes just a little. They decide on pizza and while they wait for it to be delivered, Hailey busies herself in the kitchen grabbing them something to drink. Jay pouts when she returns without a beer but she simply nods towards the medication bottles on his coffee table and he sighs. The pizza arrives surprisingly fast and Hailey serves them each a slice while Jay finds something to watch on tv. It's oddly domestic and Hailey finds herself uneasy with how natural it is. She brushes it off, certain that Jay isn't feeling the same way and grabs another slice. They enjoy their dinner, laughing at the antics of The Office and Hailey relaxes even more.

She loses track of time and when she glances down at her phone it's almost midnight. Hailey stands up, quickly clearing away their meal before returning to the living room with Jay, once again hovering in limbo unsure of what to do. Jay smiles up at her again and she has to swallow her heart back down into her chest.

"I should go. Unless you need me to stay…"

She trails off, motioning towards his leg. He sends her another grin and her heart skips a beat.

"I mean, you're always welcome to stay. But I think I can handle this little ol thing."

Jay pats his leg, just beside the wound and Hailey nods in agreement. He certainly has had worse, a fact she's all too familiar with. Jay pushes himself off the couch, against her protest and moves to stand in front of her. His proximity makes her have to tilt her head up to look at him and when she does she's assaulted by the look swirling behind his eyes. He looks nervous, or embarrassed, or something she can't quite put a name too and it sends her spinning again.

"Thank you. For today...for always having my back."

He gives her a sheepish smile and she shakes her head up at him.

"Of course, that's what partners do."

She replies and watches as his eyes narrow for a split second, searching her face for something but she isn't sure what. Before she can react, his arms reach out and he pulls her into a hug, the sudden embrace throwing her off. She recovers quickly and returns the gesture, wrapping her arms around his torso and reveling in the feel of him around her. Neither makes any attempt to move and Hailey gives herself the moment to enjoy it, since this isn't something they normally do. She's lost in the moment so when he speaks again his words catch her off guard.

"Sorry for always getting shot."

As soon as the words hit her it's like a movie reel plays through her mind, each and every time she's found him injured, beaten or bloodied on the pavement. Every heart wrenching moment when she's had to consider losing him as a real possibility or not knowing if she already had. Before she can catch herself, a rush of emotion bubbles up into her throat and she's suddenly blinking away tears. Jay feels her tense and his hands come up to her shoulders, pushing her back so he can look at her face. She tries her best to recover before he sees it but it's no use. His face instantly changes to one of panic as he takes her in.

"Hey…"

He trails off, almost in question as she forces a smile his way. She can't speak, not trusting her voice to break if she tries. So instead she gives him a quick smile and takes a step back.

"Sorry. I should go. Uh, call if you need anything."

She's retreating from his space as she speaks and quickly finds herself at his door. She whips it open as he calls out her name, limping his way to her. She gives him one last smile, an attempt to reassure him everything was fine, before stepping out and pulling the door shut behind her. He's calling her phone before she even makes it to the parking lot but she sends him straight to voicemail. She freezes when she gets outside, realizing she doesn't have a car here. Pulling up her phone she calls for an Uber and goes to wait around the corner for them to come. The cool night air does little to calm her as she struggles to put herself back in check.

By the time she's home, Jay has sent a few texts and left a voicemail. She goes straight to her room, throwing on a t-shirt to sleep in before climbing into bed. Propping herself up against her head board, she opens the texts from Jay, typing out some generic response in the hopes it will hold him off. Seconds after she hits send he's calling her and she has no choice but to answer.

"Hailey...is everything okay? You kinda freaked me out there."

His voice is anxious and full of concern and she hates herself for causing him panic.

"Yeah Jay, everything is good. I promise. And I'm sorry for freaking you out."

He's quiet for a moment before he responds and his voice is much softer this time.

"Why were you crying?"

She stiffens at his question, unsure of how to answer him truthfully. Because if she was being honest, she wasn't really sure herself and the wave of emotion had completely thrown her off.

"I just..I don't know, I guess I just thought about you getting shot. About all the times you've been shot or injured…"

Her voice lowers and she trails off, feeling the familiar burn in the back of her throat as another wave catches her by surprise.

"So you worry about me huh?"

Jay's voice is teasing and she can hear the smile behind his words, can see the almost smug look on his face.

"Apparently."

She responds, drawing out the word in her own teasing tone. They fall into a silence for a moment before his voice floats through to her again.

"Hey, I'm okay you know…"

It's so soft it's almost a whisper but it sends tears racing back to her eyes, threatening to spill. Her other hand comes up to press against her face, wiping away the moisture from her eyes before it can escape.

"Yeah…"

She breathes out, her voice barely above a whisper itself with her barely restrained emotion.

"Are you crying again?"

He asks, half teasing and half concerned.

"No."

She quickly replies, drawing out the word slowly. Her phone buzzes and she looks down to see a FaceTime request from Jay flashing across her screen. She frantically wipes her eyes one more time before she accepts but the second her face pops onto the screen she knows there's no hiding it.

"Liar."

He sends her a gentle smile and she gives him half of one back, looking anywhere but her phone while she composes herself. When Hailey glances back down her heart stops for what feels like the millionth time today, taking in the look on his face, the way he's looking at her, it makes her breath hitch in her throat. She wishes she had never left his apartment but knows it's a good thing she did because if he was looking at her like that in person there would be no going back. A blush creeps across her cheeks and she knows he notices based on the smirk tugging at his lips, but he doesn't say anything, just keeps staring.

"You should go to bed Jay."

She knows her attempt at changing the subject is weak but she's drawing a blank on how else to proceed. She watches as he stands and hobbles down his hall, into his bedroom where his screen turns black for a moment from lack of light. When his side of the screen lights back up, it's with a dim light from his nightstand. Hailey swallows hard when she takes him in this time, realizing he was now not only in bed, but shirtless. Her eyes wander down the part of his chest she can see for just a split second before she's looking back into his eyes. Another smirk tells her she's busted but she decides to ignore it.

"There. In bed."

He challenges, raising an eyebrow at her. There's a new, mischievous glint behind his eyes and it's making her nervous. She nods along with him, ignoring the look and glancing around her room.

"Mmkay. Are you going to sleep now?"

The grin he sends her as soon as she finishes her question lets her know she's in for something.

"I guess. What else is there to do in a bed?"

He shrugs nonchalantly on the other end of the phone as Hailey struggles to form a coherent reply. Her face is definitely beet red now and her heart is fluttering in her throat. He's watching her for a response and she's trying her hardest not to react, but she can tell by his eyes he got exactly what he was looking for.

"Good night Jay."

She says, quickly deciding they needed to end this conversation before she dug a deeper hole. He smiles at her again and she simply shakes her head, a nervous grin tugging at her mouth.

"Good night Hailey. Sweet dreams."

He ends with a wink and thankfully ends their call before he sees her mouth drop open slightly in shock. Hailey tosses her phone onto the bed, rubbing at her face as his words replay through her mind again and again. She slides down into the bed, knowing she's not about to sleep any time soon, and tries to push away all the thoughts racing through her head.
