Prologue

It started like any other day, Abin Sur was on patrol and as always there were two Manhunters closely following him. It was a simple task, or at least it should have been.

According to the Guardians, the prisoner Hozel Zallad, the so called Mad Monk of Talok IV, had something important to tell him. Abin Sur had been the one to capture Zallad, this mad man had gone around his sector, stating that his ancestors had given him visions of a new dark future and that the Guardians were to blame.

He had staged an uprising to, in his words, prevent it from happening. This uprising was crushed though, and Zallad was sent to prison.

Abin Sur entered the cell containing him, from what he could understand, the Talokites got their abilities from their ancestors, or something like that. Their culture was confusing to the point where some members of the Corps viewed it as nonsense.

Still, if one of them managed to somehow catch glimpses of the future, it was worth investigating.

As Abin Sur entered the cell containing the Talokite maniac, he readied his ring should he try anything, the two Manhunters accompanying him remained outside, standing guard and ready should anything go wrong.

The Talokite looked at the Green Lantern before him, he knew there was nothing he could do.

"Start talking" said the purple skinned alien. The Talokite then began laughing uncontrollably.

"What is there to talk about, Abin Sur?" Zallad questioned "I've already said what needed to be said."

"You were rambling on like a mad man that the Guardians would unleash destruction across the Galaxy. Explain what you mean by that."

"I meant exactly what I said. The Oans will destroy us all because we don't fall in line with their delirious ideal of perfection. Those bigheaded idiots wouldn't know what perfection is even if it blew up in their faces. They are stubborn, arrogant pigs, and we will be the ones to pay for that."

"You are the one who is delirious. The Guardians are just and mighty, they would never do such a thing."

"Are you certain? Because the visions the ancestors granted me showed me that your Corps will be among the first to fall."

Abin Sur looked at the blue skinned alien with a puzzled expression.

"Oh, yes. I've seen it, they will turn their little toys like the ones that are outside right now on all of us. They won't allow your Corps to survive."

"The Guardians would never do that to us."

"The Oans don't care about anything but their illusion of control over the Universe. And the worst part is they themselves won't be spared, their own arrogance will be their undoing."

"You are truly mad if you believe that." With that, Abin Sur left the cell and proceeded to leave the Prison with the Manhunters closely behind him.

Upon reaching the planet Oa, Abin Sur saw something he never expected to see. Hundreds, if not thousands, of rings flying away from the planet and in the direction of the planet Mogo.

The veteran Green Lantern saw as his comrades' many rings flew past him, traditionally a Green Lantern ring would fly to Mogo whenever the bearer's life had ended. Normally that would be several dozens or less, but for there to be hundreds of them all at once would only occur during difficult times such as war, and the worst part of it was that there were many more coming from different directions heading towards the same destination.

Something was wrong. Abin Sur decided to descend into Oa and report to the Guardians only to see the planet itself engulfed in flames. The sight of it horrified Abin Sur to his core.

He was about to retreat when a crucial thought entered his mind.

"The battery" he shouted before heading off towards the surface. The veteran Green Lantern hadn't even reached the atmosphere when the Manhunters accompanying him drew their weapons on him and opened fire.

The Ungaran screamed in pain as a beam of energy pierced his body, as his sight dimmed he stretched his arm forward in the direction opposite of Mogo, using his last breath, he muttered.

"Find someone worthy of the Corps." with that, the ring blasted off in that direction as his life force abandoned him.
