Very strongly inspired by Storylady35 and Ray-Ken's fanfic Breath of Hope. A fantastic read; I recommend it almost as highly as The Dragon Prince. It should be somewhere on my favorites list. Read it.

With Storylady35's permission, I've borrowed some aspects of their universe. HC's are listed below, but there are other similarities you'll be able to spot if you've read BoH. Watch for the Easter eggs!

Like in Dragon Prince, platonic relationships take precedence over romantic. There will be a lot of platonic bonding. Almost all romantic relationships will be canon; I won't break up any canon couples but there may be a few with OCs.

Headcanons and non-canon ideas I use/plan to use in this fic:

-Zubeia was visiting her parents on another continent when Viren and Harrow came. (Mine afaik)

-Runaan is the king/prince of the Moonshadow elves. Rayla is his heir. (Beautifulterriblequeen on Tumblr)

-Dragons can shapeshift into humanoid form/s. (Storylady35 and Ray-Ken in Breath of Hope and on DeviantArt)

-Dark magic only negatively affects people who kill to use it or use it to hurt someone. (Mine)

-Even pre-show Viren is a sadistic bastard who would psychologically torture and physically and verbally abuse a little kid. (Storylady35 and Ray-Ken in Breath of Hope)

-Runaan and Tiadrin are siblings. (I know I saw this somewhere but I can't remember where)

-Life magic is what Dark magic is trying to replicate; also its opposite. (Lily-lilou on Tumblr)

-Human connection to Life/Love magic. (Lily-lilou on Tumblr)

-Ezran and Callum's family is Jewish. (Well, it's all but canon-confirmed. The jelly tarts are freaking hamentaschen!)

-Aaravos is seductive and manipulative, and sexy even to aces…. wait this is canon… (don't tease; you know you're crushing on him too)

Xadia

Ten years ago, there was a drought in the kingdom of Duren. Its queens came to Katolis to beg aid of the new king, Harrow. Harrow was young and inexperienced, and offered Katolis's crops before stopping to consider if they had food to spare. His royal mage and best friend, Lord Viren, offered a solution.

Three queens died for his solution, instead of the hundred thousand commoners that would have died without him.

Three months later, Viren offered Harrow something else, something he could not pass up.

Revenge on the dragon that had killed his beloved wife.

Together, Harrow and Viren rode into Xadia. With a spell born from his hatred, Harrow turned the Dragon King to stone, leaving his body forever reaching toward his home. Harrow would have left it at that, but Viren understood Thunder's final words. Harrow turned back towards Katolis, and Viren rode up the Spire.

A naturally gifted Dark mage with a Sky Primal stone to boot, none of the Dragonguard could stand in Viren's way. Some fled. Others proved a minor inconvenience.

Viren reached the summit unharmed.

The Dragon Queen was gone. Why, Viren did not care. He swept aside the last two elves, and brutally murdered the Dragon King's three children: his heir, seven-year-old Princess Azymondia, two-year-old Prince Zaeron, and their unhatched sibling.

The Dragon Queen returned to Xadia a year later, thinking to regale her children and husband with a tale of her adventures in her parents' land. Instead, she found her children and Dragonguard gone and a stone in her husband's place.

The new volunteer Dragonguard, Ibis the Skywing, was barely able to hold the Queen back from attacking the human kingdoms, citing her duty to Xadia as a reason to preserve her life. Instead, the Queen called Xadia's best assassins to her. Narrowing down applicants took some time, but eventually she selected eight elite Moonshadow assassins. They would get the job done.

Four years ago, a Moon mage crept into Katolis as a spy, to determine the assassins' targets, to observe their routines.

One years ago, the mage returned.

Three days ago, eight elite assassins, and one apprentice, left Xadia. Their targets: Lord Viren. King Harrow. Lady Claudia. Prince Ezran. The Dragon King's killers, and their heirs.

I'll update weekly on Tuesdays for as long as I can, but I've only got a couple chapters written so far and way too many writing projects. I wanted to wait until this was finished to post, but I haven't written anything in it for a few weeks and thought maybe someone else's enthusiasm would help.

Review please!
