S'up everyone! Hope you've been treating your local Mcdonalds workers well and don't boast that you have a high IQ because you understood a pop culture reference.

If you follow me on Tumblr and Twitter, you'll know that one of my plans for next year will be an unpopular opinions marathon.

Consider this story a preview of what you can expect in that stretch.

Rick was eating some chicken nuggets with some SCHEZWAN SAUCE. He saw three people beating one of the workers outside, "Hey Morty! Check it out!"

Morty looked at the retail assault in progress, "Geez Rick. Should we do something?"

"No Morty. This whole thing is a charade about how I'm not something people should go out of their way to emulate."

Morty was very confused, "What? If it's a charade, wouldn't you want to go against and do something unexpected?"

"No Morty. You see I am suffering from a severe depression and unable to fight against circumstance, except for when I am."

"Why?!"

"Because this whole thing is there to showcase the problem with my character in the show-"

The Earth blew up because if Rick and Morty ever became aware of itself, all reality would just break.

Rick and Morty is one of the most confused shows I've ever seen.

It tries to be one of those shows that balance humor and seriousness, but it's pretty bad at it.

This show is very confused about what it really wants us to think about it's main characters.

Let's start with the obvious problem. The characters aren't 'good guys' they're just the protagonists. The only main character that I don't remember doing something irredeemable is Summer and I'm probably forgetting something awful she did.

Beth and Jerry are terrible. Their marriage sucks and if they weren't in it, the show would be better. They're also shitty people with Jerry outright telling his daughter to her face that his life would be better if she wasn't born.

Beth once turned an old date into a monster and she spends most of the series being whiny.

Morty isn't as bad as Beth, Jerry, and Rick, but he is also kinda awful. His naivety will consistently get people hurt or killed. Let's not forget the time he tried to use a love potion to get laid.

The result was the world ending, even if it wasn't the end thing, he still tried to date rape somebody.

Ya know what, he is as bad as the adult characters. Probably even worse now that I think about it.

Rick is the biggest victim of the show's confusion, because I have no idea how we're supposed to feel for him.

The show wants you to feel like he's an asshole, but they will try and make him sympathetic.

If that argument is too tired for those of you who dislike that, they should have had him lose more.

The fact that he is supposed to be an asshole and he wins constantly is not a good thing. Sure, you can make an asshole protagonist win interesting or funny, but you have to have him lose sometimes.

If an asshole protagonist wins all the time, people are gonna get tired of it.

Let's talk about why him being sympathetic doesn't work. Watch literally any episode of the show, the end.

You have to have him learn to not be a piece of shit before you can make him someone we can care about.

I get that most of what I am saying about Rick is mainly from S3 and S4, but the issues with Rick winning have been a thing since the pilot.

Ya have to be careful with an asshole protagonist, otherwise people are gonna stop getting invested and it being Darkness Induced Audience Apathy.

If the guy who has a universe enslaved to power his car always wins, you can't get invested.

The only reason anyone cared about this show before S3 and the Mcdonalds crap was the unique science fiction scenarios and good humor. To be honest, the humor is very hit or miss for me.

Let's talk about this fun little tibet. No, you don't need a high IQ to understand this show.

The humor is NOT extremely subtle. Rick and Morty's humor is taking a simple premise to its most extreme form.

RaM's humor is basically 'simple premise to the extreme' and references. You don't need a high IQ to get the jokes on this show. Just a mild knowledge of pop culture and you're good.

The only reason I'm not waiting until my Unpopular Opinions marathon next year to review this one is because people seem to agree with most of my problems here. They just don't let it stop them from enjoying it.

And good on them for that. If you can get past the problems of this show and enjoy it, I'm happy for ya. I'm happy that somebody got something out of it.

But seriously, don't harass Mcdonalds workers. The schezwan sauce isn't even that good from what I hear and even if it was, it's not worth your reputation or morality.
