Chapter 1: Gentle Breeze

Beach City, Emerald Hills

January 1, 2045

"Hey mom, check it out. Take a look at all of these bugs here. Its winter but there's still so many of them out here."

"Those aren't regular earth bugs dear, those are bugs native to my home planet. Now that I'm here, this place has not changed much. This is probably the only place in the whole city that has not changed."

"What was this place like before I was born, mom?" Polyphony asked.

"It was more simple. These large towering skyscrapers drenched in neon lights, and hologram advertisements did not exist. It was a simple little town with simple little shops. This whole forest feels like it was the bystander, watching the rest of everything change while it remained the same, unchanged."

"You sound so poetic mom. Were you always like that."

"No, not really. I was a cynical gem, although I wasn't always like that either." Pearl told her. "By the way dear, how is school."

"I'm going to graduate soon. School was a breeze. The classes, the lessons, the work. I suppose that being born half gem and having a gemstone right in the middle of my forehead had something to do with being so intelligent, its a bit unfair to regular humans If you ask me."

Polyphony and Pearl walked deeper into the forest. Pearl scanned the forest with her gem to see if there are environmental hazards that could hurt either her or her daughter. Aside from a few roosting owls and some passing deer, there were no threats.

"So mom, do you remember that time I showed you a guy on my phone. I told you that I thought he looked cute."

"Yeah, what about it? Oh my stars don't tell me you've gone off and found another one."

"Wow, I didn't know I was barred from still having a sexual and romantic life."

"Sex and romance are two different things entirely, baby." Pearl said.

"I beg to differ mother. Their as different as the wings on a bird, one wing is for the right side and the other for the left, both allow the bird to soar high into the sky. Were you like this with dad?"

"I was never looking for anything with who I thought was a regular human. I didn't care if he was a gem hybrid either. But he knew just how to talk to me. He knew just what to say to me. I suppose I knew I would never have what I wanted with Rose. I know it sounds weird to hear me talk about this with you."

"I don't care if you're lesbian mom."

Pearl scoffed. "Lesbian, gay, straight" none of these concepts exist for us."

"Lucky you guys." Polyphony told her.

"But now that we're out here. How about we practice some sparring, what do you think baby?" Pearl asked her.

"I was hoping you would say that. Ariana has been training me."

Pearl shot her a surprised glance, then gave a smug expression. "Then let's see how good you've got" Pearl said as she pulled out her spear from her gemstone.

"You haven't fought any corrupted gems in over 29 years mom, do you think you can keep up?"

"Time has no bearing on me or my memories dear. We gems never forget, especially our combat experience."

Both mother and daughter chose a perfect ares of the forest where Carlos trained Steven so many years ago. Pearl wasn't sure if the spot she chose was the spot where her late lover trained Steven, but something told her it was.

"Magic method, volley shots!" Polyphony said loudly and confidently. Balls of white light appeared behind her in an arching position that fired numerous baseball sized spheres of energy at Pearl.

Pearl snickered and with only her spear, danced and twirled around the spheres of energy that missed her. The ones that did came for her, she swatted away with her weapon as if they were flies. She spun her spear around like a pinwheel and blade and redirected the balls of energy aside. Polyphony halted her attack and went for a little hand to hand combat. Pearl didn't need to dismiss her weapon, instead she just kept using it to block all of her daughters.

"Wow...mom, you're really good" Polyphony panted.

"Well what did I tell you. I also trained Connie. I'm not just a swordsman baby, I'm a master swordsman!"

Pearl increased the speed of her swings and struck her daughter with the pommel of her spear on her arms, check, stomach and finally swung the pole underneath her legs, tripping her.

"Checkmate" Pearl said, pointing pommel of her spear up to her daughters face.

"You might have won this round, but can you win the second!" Polyphony said loudly, generating a windstorm from herself.

Pearl was blown back by a blast of powerful air that whirled around her daughter. Her father's gemstone glowed brightly behind her. Her hair seemed to take on a light and brilliant copper hue. "Air Method: Sphere of dancing air. Expand!" Polyphony yelled, blasting her mother further into the forest until she crashed against a tree.

"Oh no...ugh...mom, I'm sorry!" she cried out, rushing over to help her mother.

Polyphony found her mother lying down on a broke tree. "Mom I'm sorry, I didn't mean to hurt you."

Pearl didn't look physically hurt, but she looked distressed about something. She curled up in a fetal position and started to weep softly. Polyphony grabbed her mother and rested her head on top of her lap. She stroked her mother's hair and wiped away her tears.

"Why are you crying mom"

"The way you looked for a moment, you resembled him, your father."

"My...dad?"

"I wonder if he's okay. I wonder if I made the right choice to stay here on earth. I-I think I made the wrong choice baby...the wrong choice." Pearl cried and whimpered.

All her daughter could do was hold her tightly and close to her. She pressed kisses on her face and rocked her back and forth.
