Chapter Two

Boyfriends and Batter

Edward POV:

"Edward!" He turned around, trying to find the origin of such an angelic voice. Edward's eyes landed on the gorgeous blue-eyed girl, smiling as he saw her walking toward him.

"Lexi," Edward whispered. He still hadn't worked up the nerve to speak louder than that.

"Hey," Lexi said as she finally reached him. She placed one hand on her forehead to shield her eyes from the afternoon sun and used the other to point out the shaped shrubbery. "Did you do these all by yourself?"

Edward nodded and watched Lexi as she surveyed his most recent work. He had cut the bushes so that there were four people: Peg and Bill in the center while the leaves shaped like Kim and Lexi were on either side of them.

"Well, they're really good," Lexi said. "I think you could make a business out of this. I'm sure all the neighbors would love to have you do this to their front yards."

"If they want me to, then I will," He said. Edward wanted to make them happy.

Lexi's eyes were back on Edward's face, causing him to get lost in her blue eyes. They were the same color as the sky. Perfect.

"Kim just left with Jim and the others. I told them I wanted to stay with you, so… yeah. What do you want to do?" Lexi asked with a smile.

Edward's heart fluttered at the sight of her smile. He couldn't help but notice that this one reached her eyes, just like the one last night. His heartbeat grew faster as he processed what she just said. I wanted to stay with you, she said. She wanted to be with him.

Edward smiled. "Whatever you want, Lexi. Um, who- who's Jim?"

"Jim is Kim's boyfriend. I know, Jim and Kim, how stupid. Kinda makes me want to gag," Lexi must have seen the confusion on Edward's face because she continued explaining. "A boyfriend is someone you go out with on dates, and a date is when you go out to do something together, like the movies or meal or something."

"Are we going on a date?" Edward asked.

Lexi's eyes widened slightly before she chuckled. "No, Edward. You go on dates when you like someone romantically. Like, kisses and hugs and stuff. God, even the thought of it makes me want to vomit. Okay, now we gotta figure out what we're going to do.

She had a thoughtful expression on her face for a moment, then her eyes lit up. Edward made a note to himself to try and keep that light in her eyes.

"We can bake cupcakes! I heard Mom saying that we were going to have a barbeque at six, so we can make cupcakes for everyone! Alrighty, Edward, let's go."

She was so excited, it made Edward smile. He followed her into the house to bake something she called 'cupcakes.'

Lexi stood in the kitchen cracking eggs, while Edward was cutting open the new bag of flour. They had gotten all the ingredients out before they began to put them into the big mixing bowl.

"You need a nickname," Lexi said randomly. Edward finished opening the flour before looking at her in confusion. "It's a shorter version of your name. Like, how my dad calls you Ed, not that he asked. Everyone calls me Lexi, but my full name is Alexis. So, what will it be?"

Edward shrugged, causing Lexi to shake her head. "How about…" Lexi tapped her chin with a contemplative look on her face before deciding. "Eddie! Oh, Eddie's perfect."

She spun around to face Edward fully, eyeing him down with a stern expression. "No one can call you Eddie but me, okay?"

Edward smiled and nodded his head. "Only you."

For some reason, this made Lexi blush. Curse his cute face! Edward's smile only grew. He loved her blush, somehow it made her even prettier.

"Alright let's make these cupcakes!" Lexi exclaimed.

It took all afternoon because his scissorhands (as Lexi liked to call them) kept getting in the way, but they finally got the batter done. The cupcakes were in the oven, and they were smelling delicious.

Lexi dipped her finger into the leftover cake batter and brought it to her lips. She plopped the whole thing in her mouth, savoring the sweetness. She looked over to Edward who was awkwardly staring at the cream-colored liquid.

"Do you want some, Eddie?" She asked. He looked at her, then back at the bowl, then back to her before he nodded. She made sure to use another finger as she scooped another bit of cake batter.

She held it out towards him on her fingertip. "Here, go on."

Edward hesitated for a moment. Did she want him to lick it off? He didn't want to make her uncomfortable, but he had never tried cake before, let alone the batter. Edward stepped forward and placed his lips around her finger, using his tongue to collect the batter off of it. It was one of the most delicious things he had ever tasted, but he couldn't focus on the cupcakes.

His eyes were glued to her blue ones as he finally swallowed the batter and took his lips from around her finger. He didn't step back. Lexi's face was thoughtful before she spoke.

"Your eyes match the color of the chocolate chips," She said softly. She had lowered her finger but still hadn't wiped it off.

"And yours match the sky," Edward said. Lexi blushed again, causing the corner of Edward's mouth to curl up.

Lexi smiled, getting lost in his eyes. Edward was about to say something else, but the shrill beep of the kitchen timer broke them both out of their daze. Lexi finally wiped her fingers off on a towel before tending to the cupcakes, leaving Edward on his own to think.

Edward didn't know much about boyfriends, but after today, he knew he wanted to be Lexi's.
