Chapter 2

Teitan High's President

The moment he stepped inside Teitan High for the first time, Asagi thought he would be lost in the building.

He had no idea where his shoebox was, nor did he know where exactly his classroom was. He thought he was doomed for sure, but it all changed after someone called him. It was a girl with a ponytail. She looked bright and confident. However, he did not immediately realize that she was calling him because she did not call his name. She called him president several times and he only looked at her after she called him with his surname, Nagayama.

"Geez, President, what's up with you today?" she said with an amused look. Asagi knew he should not have known her, but at that time, he strangely knew who she was. Yoshino Sumire, the student council secretary.

"Yoshino," he smiled. "Sorry, I have a lot in my mind lately."

"Oh, what is it?" the girl approached him with interest. "Let me guess. Are you thinking about Ryuzaki-kun who's been absent for almost two months?"

Who's that? But he held his tongue before he blurted out those words. Instead, he only uttered a single word, "No."

"No? How cold, President. You know he's been absent because he was bullied."

"Mmm…" he only hummed as a response because he really did not know what to say. Also, he was bothered by how she called him. President? The student council secretary calling him president? Don't tell me I'm the student council president?

… That was actually possible.

Hey, hey, you're joking, right? When he realized that it was possible that he was the student council president, Asagi was terrified again. How could he not? If he was the student council president, it meant his name had been known widely in this school, which meant the protagonists definitely knew him as well. That was no good! It meant he could not plan to lay low anymore! His peaceful and tranquil life was threatened!

"President?" Yoshino's voice snapped him out of his thoughts. Asagi wanted to curse loudly for being called with such a title, but knowing it would not help him at all, he could only resign to his fate. Dammit…!

"Sorry, Yoshino, I think I just lost in thoughts. Did you say something?"

"No, but… you're really bothered by something, huh…"

Asagi forced a smile. "Yeah… sorry, I need to find my shoebox now."

"What's with that? President, you know your shoebox is just behind this one. No need to find it," the girl laughed as she knocked the locker at her right side. Asagi was overjoyed the moment he heard that. It was a clue! He went to the other side of the locker immediately while keeping his thought hidden. Yoshino was right. He found a shoebox with his name on it. Without dilly-dallying, he changed into his indoor shoes and stored his outdoor shoes in the shoebox. Now, the only problem would be how to reach his class.

"Ne, ne, President, what have you been thinking, hm?" just after he closed his shoebox, Yoshino approached him again. "Why don't you share it with me? After all, we're the student council. We have to solve students' problems together."

"Nah, it's not about student's problem," he replied, feeling dreaded when it was confirmed that he was in the student council, but that dread did not stay long because he was a little annoyed by how clingy and persistent Yoshino was. "I think we should go to class, Yoshino. Homeroom will start soon."

"Not about student?" Yoshino looked a bit surprised for a while, completely ignoring the last part of his words, but then, she smiled cheekily. "Ah, it's about a girl, then?"

Asagi sighed. "No. Can we go to our class now?"

"Hmmpph, sure." Yoshino pouted in disappointment, but she did not press Asagi anymore. Instead, she just walked together with him to their class. Asagi deliberately walked a little behind her because he did not know the way to his class. Since Yoshino was in the same year as him, he reckoned their classrooms should be in the same area.

How relieved he was when he found out that he was right! Yoshino was in class 2-B while his class was 2-C, judging by the additional writing at the books in his bag. It seemed the writing was right as well because Yoshino did not look surprised or confused when he entered his classroom. He thought his problem was clear now, but after he entered his classroom, he realized he still had a problem. He did not know which one his seat was.

For a moment that felt like an eternity, he could only stand stupidly near the front door of his class, watching his classmates who all seemed to enjoy themselves before the homeroom started. A group of girls were gossiping at the back of the class while another group of them seemed to be doing the same in the middle part of the class. There were two guys playing baseball with a paper ball and a broom and between them, another guy was spotted dozing off with earphones in his ears. A pair of girls were chatting about their club activity in front of the teacher's desk. At the same time, a group of guys were discussing video games passionately near the backdoor.

High school. He had forgotten how it felt. Lively, but also messy.

Aaahh, I feel so old when I watch these kids, he thought, but then he remembered he needed to find his own seat. He really had no idea where he should sit. There was no clue in the classroom, so he had no choice but to ask someone. After looking around the class, he decided to ask a guy who was busy writing on his notebook at the desk near the front door. He was the closest to him and he was alone, so it would be much easier for him to get into a conversation with him.

"Excuse me," he said with a polite smile, "could you please show me my seat?"

When he saw who was the one speaking, that guy dropped his pen and gaped at him. Not just that, he was trembling, making Asagi confused and worried at the same time. Was this guy okay?

"Pre-President," he stammered. "I'm sorry! Please don't punish me!"

What? Asagi was dumbfounded. Why the hell did this guy suddenly say this? Who was going to punish who?

Oh, maybe he's uneasy because he isn't used to speak with the student council's president, he thought, feeling crushed when he remembered his special status again, but could only accept it due to his powerlessness. "My seat, could you please tell me?" Asagi asked again, this time not only was he polite, he also made sure his tone sounded friendly, but strangely, that guy looked even more scared after he behaved more friendly. Really, what's up with this guy?

"Tha-that… the third row from the door… the fourth seat from the front. T-that's your seat, President." The guy showed him his seat. Asagi nodded satisfyingly when he spotted an empty seat exactly at the place where that guy had told him.

"Thank you," he smiled at him again before striding off towards his seat. He did not really understand why that guy looked terrified and nervous, but he could see that he was a good guy. He had helped him in his first day at school, so he decided that he would be nice to him.

He really had no idea that that guy was scared of him.

Lunch break had arrived. His classmates started to make groups for eating lunch together. Some of them brought their own bento, others decided to buy it in the cafeteria. As for Asagi, he belonged to the first group since he had his own bento, made by his mother. Asagi thought he would eat alone and truthfully, he preferred to be alone this time to sort out his mind. After all, there were many things he had to think of now, like his classmates' names (he managed to memorize some of them thanks to the homeroom call), but it turned out he was wrong. Just as he opened his lunchbox, someone came to his class and called him loudly.

"Nagayama! Let's have lunch!"

Asagi turned at his back, seeing a guy that looked taller than him waving at him happily from the backdoor. Like Yoshino, he should not have been able to recognize that guy, but strangely he did know him when he saw him. Inaba Mitsuaki, the student council vice president.

Before he knew it, Inaba was already standing in front of him, staring at his lunch with a tempted look.

"Wow, that looks yummy! Can I have a bite?"

"No," Asagi immediately rejected him, feeling annoyed that his plan to be alone was destroyed by him. Why couldn't he have time for himself?!

"Don't be like that, man. I will let you have a bite of my lunch as well. How about it?"

"No need."

"Stingy," Inaba scowled, but it did not take long for him to be displeased because at the next moment, his expression became curious instead. He was looking somewhere around the front door, so Asagi followed his eyesight. Nobody was there except the guy that had helped him solve his seat problem in the morning.

"What's wrong?" he asked Inaba quietly.

"That guy is strange," Inaba answered. "I accidentally caught him looking at you."

"So?" he still did not see the point. What was wrong with taking a peek at the student council president in a classroom during lunch?

"He looked… hmm… anxious? Nervous? I don't know," he shrugged, "but it's obvious he didn't look at you because he admires you."

"Oh." Asagi was silent for a while. He just remembered that that guy also behaved in a similar way when he asked him about his seat. He was sure it was him that made that guy feel that way, but… why? It was not as if he was scary. Asagi admitted he was not as handsome as Shinichi, but he was confident he did not look ugly or scary. Not to mention he had made sure to be friendly towards him when they talked, so why would that guy act like that?

"Maybe I should just ask him," he mumbled. He helped him before and Asagi had decided to treat him nicely, so perhaps he should go and have lunch with him.

"No, President, don't!" Inaba quickly rejected his idea. "Let's observe for a bit longer. I suspect he has done something wrong and that's why he looked at you that way."

"Is that so?" Asagi frowned. Now that he thought about it again, that guy asked him not to punish him the moment he noticed him. Why would he say that if he did not do anything wrong? Maybe Inaba was right.

"Okay. Let's just observe him for now," Asagi agreed. "You, take a seat."

Thankfully, there were some of his classmates who chose to have their lunch outside, leaving their seats empty which allowed Inaba to borrow one to eat in his class. They chatted casually as they ate, but they also secretly observed the guy near the front door. After finishing his lunch, Asagi came to a conclusion that Inaba was right. That guy was really looking at him when he thought neither he nor Inaba noticed and the expression on his face when he was looking at him was not pretty good. He was anxious and nervous, just like what Inaba had said.

"Who's that guy?" Inaba asked him after they finished their lunch.

"Ueda Naoki," Asagi answered shortly. During the homeroom call, he got to know his saviour's name, but that was all he knew about him.

"You close to him?"

"No." For Asagi, it was obvious today was the first day they met, but he doubted the real Asagi—if he was indeed in the body of a different Asagi—was close to him judging by his reaction when they met.

"Do you have any idea why he behaves like that?"

"Well… this morning, I saw him being busy writing in his notebook. I greeted him, but as a response, he dropped his pen and asked me not to punish him." There was no need to tell Inaba that he did not exactly greet him but instead asked him where his seat was. "What do you think?"

For a moment, Inaba only stared at him in shock. "What?!"

"I know, it's suspicious," Asagi nodded his head as if he knew what the vice president had been thinking. "The question is: why did he ask me not to punish him when he did not do anything wrong? He was just writing in his notebook."

"That… uh, Nagayama, perhaps that's the problem," Inaba said with a helpless tone. "The things he wrote in his notebook might be something that deserves a punishment."

"Oh." Asagi blinked. That was true. Why didn't he notice it before? "But what kind of writing deserves to be punished?" he asked Inaba again, this time with a serious look. Yes, he was really serious about this because he was the damn president. He did not know anything at all about the rules in Teitan High, so he could only ask his vice president for guidance.

"Hmm… threat, harassment, insult, scam, R-18 things," Inaba answered, "oh, also exam questions. Leaking exam questions to another class is prohibited… and doing someone else's homework. Copying homework is a bit problematic. We are allowed to do it as long as we do it by ourselves outside the study session and as long as our homework isn't the exact copy-paste. If the teacher finds out that we just copy-pasted, we will be punished. However, working on the other student's homework is worse than copying. It's clearly prohibited." After that, it was Inaba's turn to ask. "Hey, did you see his note? Do you know what he wrote that time?"

What did he write again? Asagi was trying to remember. A moment later, he remembered. "I saw numbers and formulas in his notebook."

"Did you see him copying other homework?"

"No. He was just writing down. I'm pretty sure he wasn't copying anything."

"Then maybe he was working on math or science assignment," Inaba mumbled. Asagi nodded in agreement.

"Is he good at math and science?"

"I'm not sure." Asagi felt embarrassed now. To think he had to admit that he did not know what his classmate's specialty was. How shameful!

"You aren't sure? But he's your classmate," Inaba looked surprised. Of course he was. Usually, anyone would be able to answer such a simple question about their classmates. Asagi was sure he would be able to answer too if he had spent a few weeks studying in the same class, but that was clearly not the case because he just had his first day here even though he was supposed to have had spent more than one semester as a Teitan's student. After all, there was no way he would be chosen as a student council president if he just transferred as a sophomore student recently.

"I can take care of that, don't worry," Asagi said, putting up a nonchalant act, "but we don't have math today and the only science we have today is biology, which definitely doesn't match with the content of his notebook. If he asked me not to punish him only because he was working on an assignment, I guess that notebook isn't his to begin with. After all, he doesn't need to worry if he's working on his own assignment," he added, hoping to divert the vice president's attention with his deduction. "Maybe someone was asking him to do their homework. He seems to comply, so it's possible he will be paid for this."

"Yeah," Inaba agreed, completely forgetting the shameful fact about his president. "Let's observe him after school as well. Since he's been wary of you, maybe he will try to meet his client as soon as possible to cancel their deal."

Asagi was just feeling relieved when he noticed Inaba was no longer questioning his care towards his own classmate, but after he listened to him more, his heart sank again.

After school? Did he just say they still had to work after school?! But he still got so many things to do! He would not have his dad to pick him up after school, so he had to go home alone. The problem was he did not know the way. He had expected he would be getting lost quite a while before being able to get home, so he thought that the sooner he went home, the better. Not to mention he still had to memorize his classmates' and teachers' names, familiarize himself with high school's lessons, and getting used to his new environment. Did his vice president just say that he had to abandon all his plans just to stalk a mere student?!

"Oi, Nagayama, did you hear me?"

Asagi who was just complaining and disagreeing silently returned to look at the vice president, his vice president who was looking back at him innocently as if he had not done anything horrible to him when in actuality, he had crushed all his plans.

"That… are you sure?" Asagi said, trying to change his mind. No, he could not give up yet. He still had a chance to fight for his own plans. "I mean, he has a phone. He can break the deal through his phone, right? He doesn't necessarily have to meet his client face to face for this."

"Hmm, that's right," Inaba stroked his chin, looking as if he had no choice but to agree. However, a moment later, he changed his mind. "But what if he gets bullied after he cancels the deal? We can't let that happen!"

"Then are you suggesting we follow him until we're sure he reaches home safely? We are the student council, not stalkers or bodyguards."

"No, I don't mean that. I know following him to home will be too much of a trouble," Inaba said. "I mean, what if he gets bullied at school? Like you said, by now, he may have used his phone to break the deal with his client because he's afraid of you, but who knows whether or not his client will agree with him easily? Even if they agree, they may threaten and bully him at school to make sure he doesn't tell you about them." After that, he quickly added, "Nagayama, at the very least, we need to observe him after school to make sure he leaves the school safely without any problem."

Asagi frowned again, feeling troubled and annoyed at the same time. Wasn't his vice president thinking too much about this? Why choose such a complicated way to solve such a simple problem?

"What if we call him now? Let's confiscate that notebook—and his phone as well—and interrogate him after school. That way, he won't be able to meet his client today, which means nobody will be able to threaten him, and since his phone is in our hands, we will be able to determine the client and the deal at the same time. After the interrogation, we will let him go, return his phone, and make sure he leaves the school safely. Problem solved." Fine, it seemed he still had to sacrifice his after school time for this mere student, but he was not going to sacrifice the other days only to observe this student again to catch his client. He was so going to finish this problem today!

"Eh?!" Inaba was so surprised he did not realize he was so loud. Only when the president in front of him signaled him to keep quiet with an annoyed face did he realize his blunder. He cleared his throat awkwardly before lowering his voice. "Sorry, but… now? I mean, we're going to do it now? Confront him, confiscate his notebook and phone now? Like, like right now?"

"Yes. Right now. Got a problem with that?"

"Well…" the vice president looked hesitant. "If, if we do it now, doesn't that mean we will be doing it in front of others? I'm afraid people will think bad of him if we do it right now."

"Hmm, that's true." Asagi had to agree that they might draw unnecessary attention that might hurt Ueda, but… "In that case, everything is alright as long as we can keep this secret, right?"

"Huh?" Inaba was baffled. "How…?"

"I'll do the talk. You wait outside." All of a sudden, Asagi got up from his seat, startling the vice president who was still sitting in front of him.

"Eh? Wait—oi, Nagayama?!"

Asagi did not give him another room to talk. He signaled the vice president to go outside by pointing his chin towards the door before walking towards Ueda's desk. Inaba was surprised again by this sudden development, but he could only do as the president said when the president himself had already made his own move.

Asagi made sure Inaba was already outside before he spoke to his saviour. It turned out that he did not have to make an effort to get his attention because even before he reached him, Ueda had been eyeing him nervously.

"Hey, Ueda," he started, warm, friendly, and definitely with a soft, low voice to avoid attention. At a glance, nobody would be able to tell that the president was going to catch a rulebreaker red-handed. "May I see your notebook that I saw this morning?"
