If there was one thing Hazel hated it was being considered sick. She was sick and she knew it but she didn't want her identity to consist of her illness. She was so much more than that. Hazel was smart. She was only sixteen and a college student. She was so funny. Hazel was also very determined. When Hazel met Gus she knew right away that he was the special one.

Gus had so much pizazz. He was kind. He was smart. Gus told Hazel about capital S Somewhere. He took her with him to Amsterdam with him. It wasn't until after Gus died that Hazel learned he had already used his wish. Instead he had paid for Hazel and his trip out of his own money. One night Hazel woke up to see Gus in her room.

"Hazel Grace."

"Gus! What are you doing here? Oh my GOD! Am I dead?"
Gus laughed.

"Relax Hazel Grace," he said, "No you're not dead. GOD allowed me to come to you at night."

"So you've seen me after you died? You know all my secrets and my flaws?"
Gus laughed again.

"Hazel Grace," he said, "I always knew your secrets and flaws. Now it's time you knew my secret."
He started to glow. He was glowing brightly. Suddenly Hazel saw him Whole.

"Oh Gus," she whispered.
Tears filled her eyes.

"Am I…"
Her voice trailed off. Gus gazed into her eyes.

"I love you Hazel Grace," he said, "and I love you in a way I never loved anyone else before you. I love you in a way I never WILL love anyone else ever. You are my soul."

"But I always thought… wrong," she said.

"You know," Gus told Hazel, "You didn't actually think wrong. You have your own point of view on things."

"And my point of view is the wrong one," Hazel said, "which means-"

"It doesn't mean anything," Gus said, "When I went through what I went through there was one thing that kept me hanging on. There was one thing that made me fight. It was you. I love you Hazel Grace. I will always love you. You will always be a part of me."

"What about others who are not as… I mean who… you know what I mean."
Gus nodded.

"Your friends are my friends Hazel Grace and who you love I love. Everyone you love is welcome in my world."

"You know what my friend Kaitlyn used to tell me," Hazel asked Gus, "She used to say if anyone could take the devil and turn him good it would be me."

Gus smiled; a crinkle showing in his eyes.

"While I doubt the devil will be turning good any time soon," he said, "Kaitlyn is right. You can do anything."

Hazel got emotional.

"I couldn't do anything," Hazel said, "I couldn't save you."

"You're wrong," Gus said, "You did save me."

"You're dead Gus," Hazel pointed out.

"I died peacefully," Gus said, "and I'm in heaven now."

"But I couldn't save you," Hazel said.

"You did," Gus replied, "You saved me by letting me fall in love with you."

"Well I fell in love with you too," Hazel said.

Gus smiled again.

"So," Hazel said, waiting patiently.

"Okay," Gus replied.
It was Hazel's turn to smile.

"Okay," she whispered.
