Flying

A week had passed since Opal came into Lara's life and she now permanently resided at the mansion with the wolves as ally's. Every morning Opal would go out flying to hunt for food before she'd return by lunchtime and relax with Lara for a couple of hours before she had to go hunt again at night, then return and cuddle up with the wolves as Lara watched some news on the TV for an hour then they all would go to bed and repeat the routine again the next day.

One particular night, Lara was lounging on the couch, reading a book as Opal lay her head on the brunette's lap, enjoying the time they spent together. Opal crooned happily, closing her eyes in content when an idea came to mind. She opened her eye again. She'd become friends with Lara for a week now and the brunette hadn't been able to experience the joy of flying yet! She looked at Lara, who noticed the look and a frown marked her face. "Opal, are you alright?" she asked in concern. Was the dragon sick?

But she hopped away from where she'd been resting, bouncing around in a circle like an excited puppy. She gestured to her back with her head and the message was as clear as day. "You...you want me to ride on your back?" Lara asked, eyes wide in astonishment. Opal nodded her head, eyes alight with glee at the prospect of showing her human friend the world from her view-point!

The wolves, who'd been quietly watching the news on TV, now all turned their eyes to the white dragon as she gestured to her back with her head, a clear indication that she wanted Lara to ride on her back. "She wants you to ride on her back, Lara." Keena spoke up.

"Yeah, I know that, Keena. But if you haven't noticed, I don't have anything to hold onto." Lara gestured to the dragon's bare back with her hands, getting the point across that she could mount the dragon and try flying without having a saddle of some kind!

But then she remembered that she had some scrap leather tucked away in the back of the garage and hurried out to grab it, grabbing some soft padding that was also tucked away, then she hurried back inside, going to grab a pair of strong scissors and a tape measure to take Opal's measurements. Dumping her findings on the floor, she first laid out the leather to its full length, which was quite a bit, she took the tape measure and walked to Opal. "I'm just going to take your measurements so I know what to create." Opal warbled in agreement and stood still as Lara measured her back and front legs, as the saddle would be strapped to her back and two loops would be made for her front legs.

"Okay." Lara drew out what the saddle would look like. (Think of Toothless saddle, just more slimmer.) After she'd drawn out the shape, she started to cut it out, asking Keena to grab a sewing kit her mother kept lying around. After Keena had retrieved it for her, Lara thanked her friend and started to sew the soft padding to the leather so Opal had something soft cushioning her back.

Then she started on the two loops that would go over Opal's front legs, sewing them to the main part of the saddle and adding some handles to the front so she had something to hold onto during the flight. It took her around five hours to complete. Wiping her sweaty forehead, Lara leaned back on her knees, groaning as her back protested the movement, having been hunched over for such a long period of time. But she was finally finished. The saddle looked good enough and Opal came over to sniff it, deeming it worthy to be strapped to her back and she turned so her back was to Lara, gesturing for the brunette to put it on. It was now 2:33 in the morning and though she was tired, she was proud of her saddle, grinning from ear to ear with a tired look upon her face. "I'll put it on, but we won't have time to use it tonight. We can tomorrow though." Lara explained as she strapped the saddle on, letting Opal put both her front feet through the loops in the saddle as she secured it tightly to the dragon's back.

The wolves had long since gone to bed an hour ago, leaving Lara and Opal behind. "How's that feel?" Lara stepped back as Opal stood in her newly made saddle upon her back, she turned her head and walked around, trying out how tight it was, which wasn't very tight, but not loose either so Lara didn't slip off during flying. She crooned happily, her blue eyes showing a look of pride for her friend! Lara smiled back and then the Light Fury buried her head into the brunette's arms, Lara hugging the white dragon as she let her friend thank her in her own way.

After her cuddle with Opal, Lara entered her bedroom and changed into some soft pj's and snuggled under her blankets, falling asleep right when her head hit the pillow.

Around 10:30 the next morning, Lara awoke from her peaceful slumber, only to scream in surprise as a pair of blue eyes stared at her, inches from her face! "Holy christ, Opal!" Lara cried out, falling out of her bed and onto the floor in her haste to push Opal away from her, it only resulted in her groaning after she'd landed in a heap on the wooden floor! "Lara, are you alright?" Keena stood in the doorway, having heard the commotion and came to find out what was wrong, finding her human friend on the floor in a heap of limbs splayed all over the place.

Lara lifted her head, her hair a mess as she groaned again. "What happened?" Keena asked with a air of concern in her voice. "Opal..." Lara began, rubbing her tired eyes as she rose to her feet unsteadily, the dragon in question stuck her head beneath the brunette, letting her use her head as a crutch. "Thought it would be a great idea to wake me up by hovering her face inches from mine this morning. I got such a fright that I fell out of bed." she concluded as she stifled a yawn. She was still tired from staying up late doing her saddle last night. But she knew that Opal would want to test it out with her as soon as possible!

"Come on, let's go get some breakfast." Keena said, turning around and leading the way down the stairs with Lara and Opal behind her. Lara yawned again as she entered the kitchen and made herself a cup of coffee to help wake her up. After the first sip, she felt slightly better and made herself some jam toast, taking the plate and her mug out to the lounge and taking a seat as Soren, Hugo and Maya all were already eating their breakfast, a plate of cooked lamb from last night. Keena sat down with her siblings as Opal lay down beside Lara, watching and waiting.

Finished with her toast, Lara drank the rest of her coffee, the morning beverage waking her tired body up fully, she took both the plate and mug into the kitchen and disposed them in the sink, then she went back upstairs to take a shower and get dressed so she and Opal could finally go flying together!

Five minutes later, Lara exited her bedroom, her hair damp from the shower as she tied it up in a braid to keep it out of her face. She wore blue jeans, a black shirt and leather jacket overtop to finish it off. "Alright, let's go." she announced and Opal dashed over to the front door as Lara walked down the stairs, chuckling at how excited the Light Fury was! She was excited too, nervous, but excited! She reached the front door and pulled it open, Opal dashed outside first, Lara following behind her, she said goodbye to the others, who all wished her good luck then she shut the door and approached Opal, who waited for her.

Stopping beside the Light Fury, Lara exhaled shakily before she climbed onto Opal's back, seating herself in the saddle she'd made last night. She fitted her booted feet into the stirrups she'd also added to the saddle, making sure they were snug and fit well. Then she grabbed hold of the handles at the front of the saddle. "Okay, when your ready, girl." she gave the all clear, but her heart was racing inside her chest, beating so hard against her rib-cage she thought it would burst right out of her chest.

Opal unfurled her wings, sensing Lara's nervousness for her first flight. She launched into the air, poor Lara screaming her lungs out from the speed she was going! "I TAKE IT BACK, I TAKE IT BACCCCKKKK!" Lara screamed, squeezing her brown eyes shut as she gripped the handles so tightly her knuckles turned white.

Opal warbled, severely amused by Lara's screaming. She looked back at her rider, crooning softly in an attempt to calm her down. Lara's body slowly began to relax as Opal glided over the white clouds that dotted the sky today. She let her brown eyes open and they widened upon seeing the beauty of the sky unlike anything she'd ever seen before! It was beautiful, the clouds looked like puffy white marshmallows and she removed one hand from the death-grip she had on the handles to let it run through the white cloud, puffs of moisture tickled her hand and she let a smile spread over her face as Opal dived into the cloud, leaving a trail of white behind her.

Lara giggled, a laugh of happiness leaving her lips as she removed her other hand, knowing that she was securely tucked into the saddle and wasn't afraid of falling from the saddle. Opal smiled toothlessly, extremely glad her new friend and now rider was enjoying herself just as much as the Light Fury was. The Light Fury did a full circle in the sky, flying past more clouds as she and Lara fully enjoyed their first flight as dragon and rider!
