Hello there! Sorry, I took so long with this chapter. I kept on rewriting it again and again. Just like the last chapter. And I settled down with this. Also, life has been hectic and also will probably be for the rest of the year. I hope you all will like it. And very special thanks to Kiki Forge kforge13 for beta reading as much as she can and Carol Commentwriter Marveleule for going through the story plot!

Also, a while back, I decided to compose a set of soundtracks for this book. And so far, I've only done 1 theme, another one is still in the works halfway. So I thought I would just put the first one out there, for you readers to listen to. Just go to this Google Drive Link, and you should be able to listen to it. Do feel free to tell me what you think!

The war was over. The Rourans leader, Bori Khan was killed, death by sword and flame. The Imperial Army was victorious. News quickly spread throughout the ranks, that Bori Khan and the Rourans were defeated, Bori Khan dead, at the hands of Chen Honghui and a woman, Hua Mulan. The news that surprised most people was the fact that a woman was the one that played such a major role in saving the Emperor. Troops were being withdrawn, soldiers returning home from battle, peace returned to the kingdom, all thanks, to the group of brave soldiers that made all of it possible.

But the victory came with a great price, dead comrades, father of families, children of families, husband of families, dead from war, killed in action. A bitter truth and painful price was paid by these valiant people that fought with bravery for the kingdom and for the ruler. Many men made their sacrifices for the kingdom, as well as a woman that those who had met her would never forget, how she turned against Bori Khan, and died from the injuries while saving the Emperor, and the now acclaimed heroes of the kingdom.

Mulan was standing in front of a grave, a tombstone. Her wounds were cleaned, and robes changed. She stood there alone. It has been days since the battle, troops were being withdrawn, celebrations were being held.

"Are you alright?" asked Honghui worried placing a hand on her shoulder.

Mulan turned towards Honghui abruptly. "Just paying my respects to… her before the ceremony," Mulan said.

"We really wouldn't have won the war without her," Honghui said as he turned towards the grave.

"We wouldn't," Mulan said with that pained expression on her face. "She was never truly a bad person, Honghui. Khan corrupted her," Mulan sighed.

"At least… she is at peace now," Honghui responded.

"You think so?" asked Mulan hopefully. "Yeah, you're right. She is probably reunited with Hong An." Mulan bowed before the grave alongside with Honghui before turning around, walking away from the tombstone and back towards the Imperial Palace.

"It's a big day for you Mulan," Honghui commented.

"For both of us, you mean," the young woman corrected.

"Well, it's more so about you," Honghui said casually.

"Honghui, you know, I would be dead by now, if it wasn't for you, right?" Mulan said as they walked.

"Really? I think you would have done a great job without my help," Honghui answered.

"I really wouldn't," Mulan sighed. "Honghui, you praise me too much sometimes," the young woman sighed.

Honghui knew that look on Mulan all too well. She only ever had that look when she was deeply conflicted and troubled about something. "Mulan is something troubling you?" asked Honghui concerned. "You can tell me if you want to."

Mulan sighed smilingly. Honghui always knew her all too well. After all they been through, it wasn't much of a surprise at all. "You remember about the time I told you about how I left my family in the middle of the night?" asked Mulan.

"Yes, I do," Honghui answered. "Why?" Honghui asked before the pieces clicked and Honghui realized why Mulan was worried. "You're worried about returning home?"

"I just… don't know how to face them Honghui… I didn't even think that I was going to survive all of this," Mulan said. "I… dishonored them… Especially my father… I took his armor and sword, only to lose them… How can I go back and face him?" Mulan asked, her voice showing the struggles in her mind.

"He will forgive you. You're his daughter after all. He will be proud, after all that you have done," Honghui assured Mulan. "I would be proud to have a daughter like you," Honghui added smiling.

"Really? Even if I ruined the family name and reputation and lose your armor and sword?" asked Mulan skeptically.

"Nothing that can't be replaced Mulan," Honghui said assuring. "I'm sure that your parent's would be glad to see you, back home, alive and well. Not to mention as a hero."

"Honghui!" Mulan blushed furiously once more, smiling weakly.

"What is it? I'm just stating the facts," Honghui answered plainly.

"You're a hero of the kingdom as well, you know that right?" asked Mulan smiling.

"Nope, you are," Mulan said.

"Alright we both are," Honghui answered smiling faintly. "We should really get ready. It is a big day today," Honghui said, looking at Mulan encouragingly as he took her arm.

It was happening. There was a ceremony being held in the palace and the Emperor has summoned Mulan and Honghui to his presence. It wasn't just the Emperor who was in the palace, there was a lot of other guests, high ranking officials, and their wives and families, friends all watching the two as they walked forwards, following the lady in front of them towards the Emperor.

Then, the lady stopped before the Emperor, bowing before him humbly. "You Imperial Highness," the lady said. "May I present, Chen Honghui and Hua Mulan," the esteemed guest introduced before moving aside as the two soldiers walked forward.

As both Honghui and Mulan walked forward, they could see their comrades all standing there alongside Commander Tung and Sergeant Qiang, looking at them with encouragement. Mulan was the first to fall on her knees before the Emperor with Honghui doing the same, showing their respect to the Emperor of the kingdom.

"Hua Mulan, Chen Honghui, the people of this kingdom owe you a debt of thanks. I owe my life to you all. In gratitude for your service and dedication… I invite both of you to take your places with our greatest decorated warriors, among the officials of the Emperor's Guard," the Emperor announced.

Mulan and Honghui couldn't believe what they were hearing. It was an honor that was being bestowed to them, to serve, to protect, something that a man would do anything to gain, this title. However, as much as Mulan wanted to take the title, she knew that she had to do something else. There was something far more important than this, her family. Mulan spoke first.

"Y- Your Majesty, we are deeply honored by this immeasurable invitation, but with humble apologies… I cannot accept it," Mulan said.

A lot of the guest around them to look at each other in surprise. Surely, they thought, Mulan didn't mean it? No one in the right mind would refuse such position. The Emperor and Commander Tung was too surprised at Mulan's words while Yao, Ling, Po and Cricket looked at each other in surprise as well. Even though Mulan's decision was shocking to many, it didn't surprise Honghui, who has expected this from her. After all, he knew that she wanted to resolve something right after this war.

"I left my home under the cover of darkness and betrayed my family's trust… I made choices I knew would risk their dishonor. Since then, I have pledged an oath to be loyal, brave, and true," Mulan said as he eyes slightly looked at Honghui who was kneeling beside her and her friends standing in front of her. "In order to fulfill this oath, I must return home and make amends to my family," Mulan finished as she looked up at the Emperor once more.

The Emperor looked pleased in a way. "Very well, Hua Mulan. Devotion to family is an essential virtue indeed. Chen Honghui? What say you?" asked the Emperor turning towards the man kneeling beside Mulan.

"Your Majesty, as much as I am honored by the invitation, I too have sworn an oath to myself, that I will protect Hua Mulan. I will accompany her to her village and help her make amends," Honghui said firmly. He has made his choice.

"Very well, Chen Honghui," the Emperor nodded. He looked at the two warriors in front of him. "The invitation still stands, if you two were to return," the Emperor said. "Of course, I cannot neglect to mention another person who saved me that day, Xian Lang, a fine lady, a warrior that will be remembered and recorded in the history books. She, who turned on her former master, Bori Khan, and helped me escape, rescued me. She was labelled a witch, a monster, now I stand to correct the skewed views of the kingdom. She was a warrior. May we have a moment of silence for Xian Lang's sacrifice…

It was a day after the ceremony. It was still early in the morning when Mulan woke up from her bed, something that she was very not used to after months of sleeping on the mattress in the camps, which basically was like sleeping on the floor. Mulan stood up, getting down the bed and walking towards the window. The sun was rising.

"I see that you are awake," Honghui's voice came from behind, jolting the young woman a bit.

"Honghui!? I thought you are asleep?" asked Mulan surprised.

"Well, I was awake for a short while before you woke," Honghui explained as he walked forward, now standing next to Mulan. "When are we going to move?" asked Honghui, knowing what is on Mulan's mind.

"Honghui… you don't have to come with me you know?" asked Mulan as she looked out the window, at the rising sun. "I am sure your family wants to see you," Mulan said.

As much as Honghui wanted to return to his village and visit his family, he has made a promise to Mulan, that he is going to make sure she makes it back home and keep her safe, which he intended to keep his words till he was sure that Mulan returned to her village safely. He has already written a letter to his family, explaining the circumstances that he is in, assuring them that he is alive and well. Of course, he didn't forget to write about the amazing woman he met in the battalion. After he done all that, he was sure he was going to keep the promise he made.

"Don't worry about that, I wrote a letter and sent it to them. They will know that I am fine and what I will be doing for the next few days. I promised you I'll go with you, remember?" Honghui said. "Plus, if we're going to get married, I have to get his approval first, don't I?" quipped Honghui.

"Well, that is true," Mulan said rolling her eyes in a joking manner. "If he even wants to see me," Mulan sighed.

"Of course, he wants to, you're his daughter after all," Honghui said assuring Mulan. "It will be fine."

"I know, I know, you said told me a lot of times that everything will be fine, although, I doubt it," Mulan sighed as she walked.

"Things worked out for us so far, right?" asked Honghui.

"I suppose so," Mulan said unsurely.

Later in the morning, Honghui and Mulan were in the stables, loading their belongings onto their horses as they prepared to leave for Mulan's home village, a long journey.

"You sure you got everything?" asked Mulan. "We should check before we leave the Imperial City."

"Well, not like we have a lot of belongings," Honghui said as he looked through the pouch. "You got the tent?" asked Honghui.

"Yeah, on the horse," Mulan said pointing back towards her horse.

"Everything is settled then," Honghui said.

"Mhm," Mulan nodded as they both walked out of the shed.

None of them were expecting to see a group of very familiar people. Their friends were there, Yao, Ling, Chien Po, and Cricket. All in normal, civilian clothes, standing in front of them, as if they were already waiting for them.

Ling was the first to speak. "Commander Tung sends his regards and wishes the both of you a safe journey," Ling said as Mulan and Honghui led their horses out of the shed looking at them surprised.

"Where is the commander then?" asked Honghui curiously.

"Busy, many things are changing now," Ling answered gesturing towards Mulan.

"Hmm? What are you all doing here then?" asked Mulan looking at the group of men surprised.

"What else? Sending you two off of course," Yao said gruffly. "You don't expect us to let you two leave without saying goodbye right?"

"Especially after what you done for us," Chien Po added.

"We owe you," Cricket said, looking at Mulan.

"We all do," Ling added. "Both of you taught us so much."

"It is nothing really," Honghui smiled. "Friends look out for each other, right?"

"Mhm," Mulan nodded looking at Honghui then at her friends.

Ever in her life Mulan would have thought that she would be accepted in the battalion, let alone make friends, but regardless, she was glad that she met them, she might not be as close to them as she was with Honghui, they were still friends to her.

"We are going to miss you little sister," Yao said as he hugged Mulan as the group was exchanging hugs with one another, knowing that they won't be seeing the two for a while.

"Oh, don't get emotional Yao. Maybe I will take up the Emperor's offer," Mulan said smirking.

"You will?" asked Chien Po a bit surprised.

"Maybe," Mulan said. "Still thinking about it. It is not a choice I can make easily."

"What about you Honghui?" asked Po curiously.

"Hmm… I am fine with either. The choice is really just up to Mulan," Honghui said. "Where she goes I goes," the man said firmly.

"Regardless of your choices, if you two ever need help, you know who to ask," Ling said. "Just tell us, and we will be there to help."

"We will remember that," Mulan nodded along with Honghui.

"Have a safe journey my friends," Ling said shaking the hands of Honghui and Mulan before the two walked towards their horses.

"Yeah, keep each other safe!" Yao added as the two got on their horses.

Mulan and Honghui both looked at their friends one more time, waving their hands at the group before they turned their horses around, riding off as the sun rose.

The journey back home was a long one. It took two days on horse. But for Mulan, the journey felt longer than it actually was. Mostly because of her fears, her worries about how she would be received, not just by her village people, but her family. What would they think about her? Would they still take her in? Would her father still take her in? Even after all she has done? What if, they hated her? What if they won't take her in anymore? Questions flooded Mulan's mind, like the countless times before, but this time it was different. It was questions that is going to be answered soon, unlike times when survival itself was uncertain.

Along the journey, Honghui could tell that Mulan was worried. He would often glance at Mulan to make sure that she is alright, which Mulan was physically. Honghui knew that Mulan was worried about facing her father, something he understood. He tried talking to her along the journey, but he could tell that the constant worry was making Mulan depressed and not wanting to talk much as they rode.

It was the first and last night of the journey towards Mulan's village. Honghui and Mulan stopped and camped at a village that was on the route towards Mulan's home, staying for the night. Everything was settled, the movable tent where they slept in every night was set up, with their horses secured and their belongings moved inside the tent, well not like they have much belongings after the war. The tent wasn't as big as the army's obviously. But it was enough for two persons to sleep in. And with their belongings mostly lost in the war, they didn't take up much space.

"Alright, everything seems fine so far," Honghui said as he walked into the tent, the insides dimly lighted by the burning fire outside. He was done doing the last few checks before they slept in for the night. He was actually expecting to see Mulan ready to sleep, laying, instead, he saw Mulan, sitting on the thin mattress, her arms wrapped around her legs, deep in her thought.

"You know, I think I intimidated someone out there just now, wearing this armor," Honghui chuckled as he took off his armor, placing it aside, trying to get the woman's attention, but she still didn't respond much. "Mulan?" asked Honghui as he sat down next to her. "What are you thinking about?"

"I am worried," Mulan sighed. "You know… nothing new… I told you before. All those things…"

"Yeah I know," Honghui said, his eyes fixed on Mulan. She was still looking at the opening of the tent, staring. Honghui sighed. "Come here," Honghui moved closer towards the woman, letting her lean against his shoulder.

"What if, they hate me now?" asked Mulan. She was trembling a bit from the scary thought

This wasn't the first time that Mulan and Honghui talked about this, a possibility of going back to her family, after the war. Except that this time, the war has already ended, she was going home. The possibility was already becoming a reality. One that Mulan feared as well as hoped.

"They won't," Honghui assured as he stroked her hair softly. "Don't worry, no matter what happens tomorrow, I will stick with you through it all," Honghui promised as Mulan rested her head on him.

"I know you will," Mulan said, feeling a bit better now as she kissed Honghui's cheek briefly before laying back down, on the mattress, yawning.

"You look tired," Honghui commented as he looked at the girl.

"Well, I am still human after all," said Mulan as Honghui said down beside her, looking at him.

"Mulan, don't think about it so much, just rest," Honghui urged as he wrapped his hands around her waist, pulling him close, nuzzling the back of her head. "Sleep Mulan, you need it."

"Yeah, you are… right," Mulan yawned.

"Rest well Mulan," Honghui whispered into the woman's ear as he held her close to him, giving her warmth, loving warmth. Soon, Honghui felt Mulan's muscles relax in his arms as he could hear the woman's breaths slowing down. She was fast asleep, presumably exhausted from the long journey they took that day.

Honghui couldn't felt but let a small smile spread across his face when he was certain Mulan was asleep, knowing that she was resting. After withdrawing his hands a bit before he fell asleep as well, the young warriors, sleeping close, side by side, sleeping through the peaceful night.

The next day, they woke up quite early when the sun was just rising from the clouds. They quickly packed their things up and continued the journey, riding towards Mulan's home village. Half of the day has passed when Mulan and Honghui saw the greens, people and then, the village.

"This place is… beautiful," Honghui said as they rode towards the building.

"The same as I remember," Mulan agreed as she looked forward. That mixed feeling of hope and dread had never felt stronger.

"Take a deep breath Mulan, everything will be fine," Honghui said as they rode into the village.

Mulan did just that, taking in a deep breath, closing her eyes before opening them. The two warriors rode into the village, earning themselves stares from the villagers that were outside, some were in their stalls while some were looking down from the balcony. Muttering could be heard as everyone's attention was drawn to the return of the Hua family eldest daughter.

Mulan then looked up, she immediately saw a familiar face, her younger sister, Hua Xiu. The young woman was looking from the balcony before realizing what just happened. Out of excitement and relief, the young woman quickly ran down the stairs and hurried towards her older sister, one whom she thought that she would never see again.

The elder sister couldn't help but smile as she got down her horse and hurried forward towards her sister. "Hua Xiu!" Mulan as she embraced her younger sister as she fell forward, hugging her tight.

"You are alive! You are alive!" Hua Xiu repeated with tears, in relief. "We were all so worried about you, Mulan." Tears were streaming down the younger woman's cheeks as she hugged her sister tight, afraid to lose her again.

Honghui just got down his horse and looked at the two sisters, he couldn't help but smile. He was happy for Mulan, finally able to get home, to reunite with her family that has surely missed her. He just stood there silently as she watched Mulan reunite with her family.

Mulan just smiled tearfully as she and her sister hugged, she too was crying from the joy of seeing her family again. The feeling of this reunion was just overwhelming for her. "Yes… little sister, I am."

The two women parted. Hua Xiu looked at her, tears still streaming with joy and disbelief. "There is so much I have to ask you," the younger woman said.

Mulan knew that she had to stay strong, after all, it wouldn't help if two of them were an emotional wreck in the middle of the village. She smiled as she held her sister's arm. "Tell me about you first," the older woman encouraged as she held Hua Xiu's hands.

"I… I am matched!" Hua Xiu stuttered, still overwhelmed with emotions.

"Wait really?" Mulan couldn't believe her ears. It was a incredible news, even after they terrible mess up that happened before she left.

"Mhm," Hua Xiu nodded quickly.

"Ohh, Hua Xiu, I am so happy for you!" Mulan said smiling, pulling Hua Xiu into another tight hug before letting her go. 'What is he like?" asked Mulan excitedly, the cheerful little girl personality coming back to her once more.

"He is… handsome, a little shy," Both women couldn't help but chuckle, but best of all? He is not afraid of spiders," Hua Xiu chuckled.

Mulan just laughed. Remembering how that phobia of her sister caused her to mess up so bad. "I am so happy for you!" Mulan was overwhelmed. She felt happy to know that her family has been doing well when she was gone.

Before Hua Xiu could say something, Mulan heard someone else running towards her and she looked up, it was none other than her mother. "Mulan!" The older woman chucked her cheeks wet with tears as well as the mother hugged her daughter.

"How are you?" asked Mulan's mother smiling as she looked at her daughter, brushing a strand of her hair aside.

"I am well mother," Mulan answered quickly as she looks at her mother, the tears in her eyes blurred her vision a bit. But she could see her, she was well indeed. "How is fa-" Before Mulan could finish asking her question, she could see him, her father, walking out from under the roof, limping towards her, with a stern look on his face.

Mulan felt her heart drop, was this it? Was her father about to scold her or punish her for doing what she did. Either way, she knew that she couldn't escape, she couldn't run, and she shouldn't do that. This was her choice, she was going to face the consequences, whether she likes it or not.

Mulan slowly walked towards her father before he stopped, now, father and daughter were standing in front of each other. Mulan looked at her father, the small smile on her face disappeared when she saw that stern fierce look on her father's face.

At that moment, Mulan was didn't know what to say. Well, she did know what to say, but she wasn't sure how to put it. She has made so many mistakes, tarnishing the family name, the reputation that her family worked so hard to build. Now, facing her father, she trembled in fear and guilt as she spoke. "Forgive me father," It was all Mulan could say at that moment before pausing and taking a deep breath as a tear slid down her cheeks. "I… stole your horse, I stole your sword… and your armor… and… the sword… I lost it… It is gone…" Mulan finished. She felt terrible, once again reminded of the things she done. She paused again, looking at her father, she could tell in a way, that her father was shaking in anger. "I understand… how much that sword meant to you." Mulan paused as she saw her father tremble even more now. She sighed. "I am sorry, father."

It took a while for Hua Zhou to finally say something. "You are wrong," the man begun. "It is my daughter, that means everything to me… And it is I who should apologize…" Hua Zhou said slowly, emotions overwhelming him. "My foolish pride… blinded me… that I couldn't see… and I drove you away…" the older man said as he walked forward, limping as he leaned onto his walking stick before standing closer to his daughter. He placed is hand on Mulan's shoulder before looking at her.

Mulan looked at her father's eyes, it wasn't anger she saw, it was pride in her father's eyes as he held Mulan's arm, brushing her hair aside. "One warrior knows another… you have always been there… yet I am now, seeing you for the first time… I didn't see it then… But… I see now… this is who you meant to be…"

Mulan was truly crying now, she moved forward and hugged her father tightly, emotions overwhelmed the both of them as the shared a warm hug. It was a while until the father and daughter parted, looking at each other before Hua Zhou realized someone.

"Who is that?" asked the older man curiously, pointing towards Honghui.

Honghui saw Mulan's father pointing towards him, knowing he ought to introduce himself, he walked forward and bowed before the old war veteran.

"Mr. Hua," Honghui bowed. "I'm Chen Honghui, a friend of your daughter from the Imperial Army."

"A friend?" Hua Zhou said lifting his eyebrow, looking at his daughter then at the man beside him. He wasn't sure what to make of Mulan bringing a man back home from the army, could it mean something?

"Honghui has saved my life many times father," Mulan stepped forward. "He is a good man."

"I will be the judge of that Mulan," Hua Zhou said as he looked at Honghui unsurely.

Honghui wasn't sure what to say next. Hua Zhou, Mulan's father seems pretty skeptical about him being his daughter's husband. As Hua Zhou looked at Honghui, the man saw a shadow being casted over him before it moved, and that familiar bird landed behind Hua Zhou, on top of the roof of a stall.

"Wait… that phoenix," Honghui muttered as he recognized the bird. He has seen it many times before to know that it was the one and same, the phoenix, the guardian of the Hua Family.

"Wait… you can see the phoenix?" asked Mulan in surprise as she too saw the orange-yellow bird landing on top of the stall that was her sister's.

"Hmm? hummed Hua Zhou surprised. "No… no one other than our family should be able to see the phoenix… unless… It is a sign from the ancestors," the old man looked at Honghui, amazed. "You saw the phoenix?"

"It was only through your ancestors that I was able to find your daughter," Honghui said.

Hua Zhou looked at the man in surprise. There was something different about him, something that stood out from all the men in the village. And the fact that he could see the phoenix proves it even more. Chen Honghui is different, and perhaps, it was fate that brought him and her daughter together. He then looked at Mulan, he nodded smiling, as if approving.

"Hmmm perhaps, I have been too judgmental about you. Would you like to stay for dinner, young man?" asked the older man humbly as he turned back towards Honghui.

"Would you like to stay forever?" came a cheeky voice from behind.

"Hua Xiu!" Mulan blushed, her cheeks turning red once more as she turned away from Honghui.

"Sir, if it is not too much trouble-" Honghui stuttered in surprise, turning towards the man.

"Don't worry, it is not," Hua Zhou nodded. "You can stay however long you like." Hua Zhou then turned towards her daughter. "Mulan, show your manners and kindly show him around."

"I will, father," Mulan sighed, blushing a bit from the embarrassment.

Mulan watched as her mother helped her father walk back into the house while her sister looked back at her smirking, which made Mulan chuckle a bit. She certainly haven't change one bit, that is for sure.

"Your sister?" asked Honghui chuckling.

"She is like that, don't mind her," Mulan answered as they walked towards Mulan's family house.

"You see nothing to worry about," chuckled Honghui as she brushed a strand of hair from Mulan's face.

"Honestly, all of this… feels unreal to me," Mulan looked around as she walked towards her family's house with Honghui following her. "I didn't think I would still be alive now to be honest. I mean, what could I do now?"

"Well… we could settle down… have a family," Honghui suggested playfully poking at Mulan's torso, making the young woman chuckle. "Or… we could take up the Emperor's offer. And to be honest, I am fine with either, it's your choice Mulan," Honghui said, looking at Mulan.

"Hmm, a difficult choice to make," Mulan frowned. "How about this? Let's head inside, and well, let's eat. The war is over, we have some time, let us enjoy it while we can," the woman said smiling nudging Honghui.

"That sounds about right," Honghui said smiling.

None of them has thought that they would have survived the war, let alone meet someone that will change their lives forever. Though this part of their lives has proven challenging, difficult, hopeless at first. Now, the war was over, there is a chance, a new start. This was just the beginning of their story….
