AN: This is my very first attempt at a Fan Fiction story of any kind. It's just a short little one shot that's been rattling around my head for a while now. ~ I am not a writer so there are bound to be loads of grammatical mistakes but I did my best. Please be kind! ~I own nothing.

Christian glanced nervously around his new classroom. He stood at the front of the room with his new teacher Mrs. Jones, as she tried to settle the children into their desks.

"Alright class it's time to take your seats. We have some very exciting news!" Her words caught the attention of all the children, who were now clamoring into their seats.

"We have a new friend joining us. His name is Christian. Let's all give Christian a big welcome!" She said in a cheery voice.

"Hi Christian!" the class greeted in one loud chorus.

Christian gave a shy smile and a small wave in reply. He'd been anxious about starting school, but his new mommy Grace had told him everything would be just fine. She assured him that would make lots of friends, learn a world of new things and have tons of fun.

It all seemed too good to be true but his new parents had been wonderful to him ever since he came to live with them over a year ago. He had no reason to suspect they'd be lying to him, but as he looked around at the small group of children starring at him he couldn't help but think that this whole idea of kindergarten had been a bad one.

Mrs. Jones guided Christian to an empty desk where he noticed a colorful name tag secured to the front of it with his name on it. He looked around and noticed that all the other children had name tags on their desks just the same.

Christian's eyes continued their journey around the room, taking in his new surroundings when suddenly he became transfixed by a sea of blue.

A little girl with bright blue eyes was looking directly at him from just one desk over. She wore light blue overalls with a bright yellow shirt and hot pink sneakers. Her chocolate colored hair was tied into two frizzy pigtails, and she was starring at Christian with a wide smile, showing off her one missing front tooth.

Christian had no idea what to do so he just smile back. This caused her to let out a small giggle as she looked back to the front of the class.

After a busy morning of learning numbers, drawing pictures and listening to Mrs. Jones reading stories it was finally time for lunch. The class walked in a single file line into the lunchroom. Once there the kids settled themselves onto the long benches, took out their lunches and began eating.

Christian, in a hurry to do the same, opened his backpack reached inside and felt... nothing! He opened his backpack wider and shifted around all the items inside, sure that his lunch bag must've slipped to the bottom, but no... there was no lunch bag. His new mommy must've forgotten to pack it.

Christian closed his bag and looked around at all the other kids eating and felt that old familiar pang of hunger rumble in his stomach. He hadn't felt that since he was still living with his old mommy. Tears began to fill his eyes as those unpleasant memories began to resurface, when suddenly he heard a voice from behind him.

"What's the matter?" The squeaky voice behind him said. "Did you forget your lunch?"

Christian turned and saw the girl with the bright blue eyes standing there. He quickly wiped his eyes and nodded his head slightly.

"That's okay, we can share mine!" She said excitedly.

She plopped down next to him at the table and began to unpack her lunch, which consisted of a sandwich, a box of apple juice, baby carrot sticks and a giant chocolate chip cookie.

"I hope you like peanut butter and jelly." She said, holding out half her sandwich for him. "My daddy makes them the best!" Christian looked at her in awe, was she really going to share her lunch with him?

"We'll go on.. take it" she insisted. He didn't need telling twice. He grabbed the half she handed him with a "thank you" and began eating. They settled into a comfortable silence as they took turns sipping apple juice and eating.

"I'm Anastasia but you can call me Ana. You're Christian right?" He nodded his head, his mouth full of food.

"You don't say a lot do you?" She asked him. Christian shook his head in response, now munching on a carrot stick.

"Well that's okay my daddy says I talk enough for two people." Ana said with a giggle. The sound of it was lovely and cause Christian to let out a laugh of his own. Soon there came a deluge of questions from Ana. She seemed to want to gather a lifetimes information from him in a single lunch hour.

"What's your favorite color?.. mine is rainbow.. What do you like better, dogs or unicorns?.. I really want to get a dog but only cause daddy says a unicorn would be too big to sleep in my room... Do you like to sing?..I love to sing.. I'm not very good but I'm really loud!.. What about dancing?.. I love dancing and I'm so good at it that my daddy says I got two left feet!...What are you going to be when you grow up?.. I'm going to be tall!..."

Christian's head was spinning, question after question flowed easily from Ana as they continued eating. With a few minutes left in their lunch hour Ana split her giant chocolate chip cookie in half and gave Christian his share. She then hit him with one last question.

"So Christian do you want to be my best friend?" She asked with her wide smile that Christian was quickly growing fond of.

He looked at her an thought she's definitely something special... maybe a little crazy... but in the best way! He knew he wanted to be best friends with Ana. Christian's head gave a vigorous nod while his mouth gave a resounding YES! and he thought maybe this whole kindergarten thing wasn't such a bad idea after all.

Christian and Ana looked at each other, both smiling brightly as the bell rang signaling the end of lunch.

Grace's POV

Grace gave a huge sigh as she sank down into her seat in her office. What a hectic morning it had been. What with it being the first day of school for both Elliot and Christian. She had wanted everything to be perfect, especially for Christian.

Grace knew this was a new experience for him and she worried over the possibility of pushing him too far too soon. But after reassurances from Carrick that Christian being around other children his own age would help break him out of his shell, she relented.

Carrick had to leave for work earlier than usual that morning and between trying to wrangle a very excited Elliot, reassuring a very nervous Christian and trying to get herself ready for a busy day at the hospital, Grace was exhausted. She settled herself down at her desk and opened her bag when the sight of a little blue bag caught her eye. Her heart immediately sank, it was Christian's lunch bag.

Knowing Christian's on going struggle with food and the anxiousness he still felt about potentially not being able to eat, which stemmed from the trauma of his past, Grace knew she had to act quickly. She looked down at her watch, sprinted out of the door and jumped in her car. Grace hoped she would be able to make it to Christian's school before his lunch hour began.

Grace finally reached the school and was told that the lunch hour for the kindergarten classes had already begun. She hurried to the lunch room and was stunned by what she saw. There was Christian, sharing lunch with a little girl. She watched them for a little while, he looked happy. He had the biggest smile she'd ever seen on him.

Grace had hoped for this, for Christian to be able to make friends and break out of his shell but she couldn't imagine it would've happened this soon. She was elated, tears of joy filled her eyes as she watched Christian and his new little friend smile and laugh.

After a few more moments she heard the bell ring and watched her son shuffle off with the rest of his class. Grace left the school and headed back to work, her heart feeling light as feather, knowing her little boy would be just fine.
