Herd There's a Problem

Jason M. Lee

Lady ignored the tall grass and brush cutting thin lines on to her exposed legs, shooting blindly behind her as she dashed through the field. It was supposed to be an easy job on driving out some demonic goats that had started eating a farmer's own normal goats, but the herder also lived near a mountainous region, and much to her frustration the demon goats had chased her to what her gut was saying had to be a cliff.

She didn't know where Dante went, other than him having split off to thin the devilish herd in a different direction. Either way, she just hoped that she wouldn't end up as a meal for these suckers. One goat got a grenade thrown right into its mouth, taking it out alongside several others, but it didn't dissuade the rest of her pursuers. She was already down to her last two grenades, and didn't want to chance blowing a hole beneath her.

Breaking through the brush had her immediately pinwheeling to avoid running straight off a sheer drop, foaming rapids thundering below. Whirling around, Lady knew there was no way for her to safely take on the remaining herd without falling. As if knowing she was trapped, the largest of the goats bleated loudly as if to taunt her before charging.

Thinking fast, she fired a missile and hoped her grappling hook would catch on to the cliff side as rocks and screaming goats fell around her after leaping back. Hope sprung when the bayonet caught the cliff side, prompting her to immediately start the reeling mechanism. Unfortunately, a large boulder quickly knocked the bayonet loose.

"Shi-!"

Red and black flashed towards her and trigger discipline had her not shoot at Dante when he grabbed her wrist, twisting about so his momentum wouldn't snap her neck or his wings as he leveled off. She glared at the toothy grin that had formed on his face.

"What, no prize for the save?" he teased, voice distorted due to being in Devil Trigger.

She sniffed indignantly, dropping her grenades below to makes sure the goats were dead. "Told you before: I don't date demons covered in blood. And we're on the clock."

"Eh, so you say."

Lady wondered how long it would take to not react to him in Trigger. Probably a long time.
