I enjoyed the new Suicide Squad movie a lot, knew I had to write something for Abner and Milton (Krilton)I might write more for this ship, I'm definitely going to write more for this movie, but here's a fix-it fic for two of the best boys.

"I want to help," Milton said, grabbing a gun that Abner swiftly took from him and handed to Peacemaker.

"You've done enough, you've done a lot. But we're the suicide squad. And you're… Not. I have to be out there but you don't. Please don't risk your life like this, you're a better person than any of us."

"Why'd you even end up in prison?"

"I killed my mom with interdimensional dots. They don't let people like that go free."

"She deserved it," Milton whispered, "Just as those sick bastards who ruined Corto Maltese deserve everything that's coming to them. Which is why I'm going to help."

"Milton," Abner said, putting his hands on the other's shoulders, "Listen. I really like you, which is why I absolutely cannot let you set foot outside this bus. You've done enough. We'll leave you something to defend yourself with, please stay in the bus."

Milton hesitated, looking at the pain in Abner's eyes. Abner had lost or been betrayed by the people most important to him. Now he was trying to keep just one person safe while he marched to his own death.

"I'm going to see you on the other side," Milton said, hesitating before pulling Abner into a hug. Abner flinched before realizing there was no malice in the gesture, and then he reciprocated.

"You're going to make it out. This doesn't have to be a suicide squad."

Abner felt tears dampen his cheeks as Milton continued to hold him, "Maybe it would be better."

"Maybe it wouldn't. I'll be waiting for you, Abner."

Abner nodded, and joined the squad outside of the bus.

Waiting was the hardest part. Waiting, hiding, pretending he didn't know what was happening, pretending he didn't know that every crash could be the one that killed Abner. Waiting was the hardest part. He nearly held his breath until it was over, shooting what threatened his bus and praying that Abner was alright. Abner was the only one who had actually cared about him, the only one who had taken the time to learn his name. Milton very much wanted that sweet freak of nature to be okay.

And then, with a yell and swarm of rats, it was over, and Milton finally stepped out of the bus.

So many lay dead, slaves to the starfish. Others remained, sobbing over their loss, over their ill-gotten victory. These people, this suicide squad, had saved the day, but at what cost? Corto Maltese would never be the same again. And the people who had fought for it would never be the same again.

Milton looked around and realized he could not see General Rick Flag or the buff white guy known as Peacemaker. Well, of course there would be casualties, but how many had to be lost? There was Rat-catcher 2, there was King Shark, there was Harley and Bloodsport, where was Abner?

"Milton!"

In an instant he was being pulled into a hug by the Polka Dot Man himself.

"Oh, you're safe, you're alive," Milton sobbed, "I thought you'd get infected, Starro sent out so many little beasts I thought you were a goner."

"I stayed in the bus," Milton replied, holding Abner close, both of them feeling safe for the first time since this whole thing had begun.

"You stayed in the bus. Thank you, thank you, you beautiful man, I love you-" Abner froze, pulling a little bit away from Milton's embrace and blushing like a little kid with a first crush. Milton blushed in return.

"I love you too, you're a hero. You saved the world."

A smile spread across Abner's face. A real smile, a beautiful smile.

"I am a hero, aren't I? It's crazy. I thought I was doing all of this to prove to my mother that I was more than the monster she made me into. But when it was all said and done I realized I did so much of it for you."

Milton smiled back, holding onto Abner's hands now, gazing into his eyes, only registering a moment later-

"There's still a bomb in your neck, isn't there?"

"Robert is bargaining for our lives. They're not going to blow me up after I saved the world from their monster."

Milton frowned, "Nothing is ever cut and dry, is it? It's never, there's the bad guy, here's a gun. Luna and Suarez were detestable people, but so were the ones who came before…"

"And I'm a matricidal monster who just saved the word. It's so much more complicated than the stories of heroes and bad guys I grew up on. My mother believed those fairytales, and turned herself into a villain by trying to create heroes. Most of the real devils in this world never had a starfish controlling them."

"The people in charge of your squad aren't going to let you go free, are they?"

"Amanda Waller would rather see me dead than calmly sipping coffee in Corto Maltese. I'd do anything to stay here. I'd rip the bomb out of my neck and go off the grid forever if I could. But you only get that kind of protection when you're a big shot like Harley."

"I'd protect you," Milton said, putting a hand on Abner's neck, thoughtfully, wishing he could fix the problem with a fairytale kiss.

"If you simply disappeared, your friends would tell her that you died. We'd deal with the bomb and then we could calmly share a cup of coffee in the safety of the reformed Corto Maltese. After all, we're heroes here. That earns us some protection, I think. That earns us a reprieve."

"Do you think we would be safe here?"

"I think I'd do anything to make sure of it. If you let me be the hero this time, I'd do anything to save you."

"I'd do anything to be free, with you," Abner agreed.

"Then let's do it. Let's go save ourselves."

So the Polka Dot Man got what he always wanted, a death of sorts. And Abner Krill got what he'd always wanted, too. Someone who loved him and stayed around long enough to live, someone who made him want to be alive. Someone who had stayed in the bus, someone who had left it when it mattered most.
