DM Margo's Glass Gashing Chapter 2

''Don't worry Margo'' said Lucy, ''You've had an x-ray before when you twisted your ankle, remember?''. ''Yes Mom'' said Margo, ''I remember''. Afterwards the nurse practitioner told Lucy and Margo the results. ''There hasn't been any damage to her lungs'' she said, ''The cuts on her chest aren't as deep as that, but there is a small piece of glass inside her chest, actually it's very close to the lining of the lungs, she's been quite lucky''. Lucy looked anxious. ''However the cut on Margo's hand is very deep'' the nurse practitioner continued, ''So she'll need an operation to check if the movement in her hand is affected and to remove the glass piece from her chest''. ''An operation?'' asked Margo, ''Like what Edith had when she had to have her appendix taken out?''. ''Yes that's right, Margo'' said Lucy.

The nurse practitioner gave Margo a white hospital gown with mini blue diamonds on it and Lucy helped her daughter to change into it, she pulled a curtain around them so Margo could be private. To her surprise, the gown opened up from top to bottom! Margo felt strange wearing a gown that opened up, it wasn't like her normal green nightgown at home and the only thing she was used to opening up was her jacket, but she was a good sport so she didn't complain. Two porters came to take Margo to the operating theatre.

Lucy lifted her daughter onto the hospital bed and walked alongside as the porters wheeled Margo along the corridor to the operating theatre. When they got there, Margo saw the big light above her and the surgeons all wearing their special clothes all ready and waiting to fix her up. One of the surgeons put a mask on Margo's face to help her fall asleep. She breathed in the special sleeping gas called anaesthetic until she was out like a light and fast asleep. Margo had never smelt such a strange gas in all her life. While Margo was having her operation, Lucy had a thought and briefly left to go to the nearby music store, brought something and hurried back into the hospital before the surgery was finished.

When Margo woke up from her operation, she felt very sleepy and confused and didn't know where she was. However as her eyes opened slowly, she did see her mom sitting right by her side on a chair. ''Mom?'' she said. ''Yes Margo, it's me'' said Lucy, gently. Margo was happy to see her mom again. Lucy stroked her daughter's hair comfortingly. When Margo was fully awake, Lucy gently lifted her out of her hospital bed and cradled her daughter in her arms with Margo's bare feet dangling. ''Margo, oh my little girl'' said Lucy, softly. It didn't take Margo long to give in, she threw her arms around her mom and then noticed her wounded hand was all wrapped up in bandages with only her fingers and thumb sticking out. ''Mommy, I mean Mom'' said Margo, weekly. ''It's ok Margo, It's all over'' soothed Lucy. They stayed like this for a few minutes. ''You are so brave, my previous angel'' said Lucy kissing Margo on the head, ''I'm really proud of ya''. "Thanks, Mom, I love you" said Margo, hugging Lucy tight. "Love ya, too" Lucy smiled warmly. ''Margo? She's awake?'' said a doctor who had come round to check on Margo after the operation. ''Yes she is'' said Lucy. ''It's nice to see you two back together'' said the doctor, ''But I have something to show you both''. She took out a small tub and opened it to show Lucy and Margo what was inside. ''Here's the piece of glass that you had in your chest this whole time, Margo'' said the doctor. Margo glanced at the small tub, sure enough there was a piece of glass stained with blood.

''You're a very lucky girl that this piece of glass didn't do further damage before we could take it out'' the doctor continued, ''Your lungs are protected by the chest wall which includes a cage of twenty-four ribs and a thick cushion of muscles. They're called the intercostal muscles, their job is to move in and out to help you breathe. A deep through the intercostal muscles could damage your ribs or even your lungs!''. The glass only skinned the surface of your rib''. Margo hadn't heard the name, intercostal muscles until now. She was amazed at all those details about the human body. ''You've done really well Margo'' said the doctor I think you're ready to go home soon''. When the doctor had gone, Lucy lay Margo back on the hospital bed and said ''I got something for you for being brave''.

She handed her daughter a small square present. Margo pulled off the paper and gasped, it was the new Rebel Dolls album with all their latest songs! ''Thank you so much Mom!'' squealed Margo, happily. ''My pleasure sweetie'' said Lucy, giving her another kiss. While they waited for Gru to come and pick them up, Lucy read Margo a story. It was another story book she'd made herself 'The Blue Giraffe and the Green Zebra'. "A giraffe and a zebra? As mother and daughter?" asked Margo. ''Yes'' said Lucy. "Why does that zebra have glasses?". ''She's you, Margo'' chuckled Lucy. "Woah, really?" asked Margo, in amazement. ''Yes and the blue giraffe is me'' Lucy grinned. "Why? Is it cos you're so tall?" said Margo. ''It might be'' said Lucy. Soon Gru arrived on the ward with Dru, Edith and Agnes.

''Margo! You're all right!'' cheered Edith. Agnes just hugged Margo tightly. Gru gave Margo a Rebel Dolls T shirt and Dru gave her a Rebel Dolls ballet bag much to her delight. Before they left the hospital, Margo got changed into her normal clothes. When they got home, Lucky came to welcome Margo back by licking her face! Then Kyle and Blondie came and licked Margo's face too. ''Stop it all of you!'' Margo laughed. Gru, Dru and Lucy pulled the pets off of Margo. ''I've got another surprise for you Margo'' said Dru. He went to fetch something. Margo heard the sound of crashing. ''I know it's in here somewhere'' she heard Dru say. The banging continued, then Dru came back holding a toilet brush.

"Here it is!" he said, then he stopped and realized he'd made a mistake. "AHHH! Oh, no! That's a toilet brush!" he chuckled, awkwardly. "Sorry. Be right back". Dru thumped and clanged away before he came rushing back in carrying a scrolled up poster carrying a scrolled up poster. "There you go, my dear" he said giving it to Margo. She unrolled the poster to see what was on it. It was a new poster of the Rebel Dolls. "Thank you, Uncle!" said Margo. ''Er you're welcome'' said Dru, awkwardly. ''Oh Dru, you shouldn't have'' said Lucy with a smile. She thought Dru was just too thoughtful.
