This wasn't how she'd envisaged the rest of her life.

Susan crouched in a crack in the rock and stayed as still as possible. She'd barely made it here, the only thing keeping her alive at the moment being her ability to climb. Crowds of them were teeming at the base of her hideout, and she was unpleasantly aware of the ones above her trying to figure out how they could jump down from above, presumably to immobilise, kill and eat her. After all, that was what they'd been trying to do since day one. She was just another juicy bit of meat.

At some point she'd have to get away, to eat and drink, or else she'd die of dehydration.

If she could stay as still as the stone around her, they might give up, decide she'd disappeared somehow, and the whole cycle would begin again - to continue for who knew how long.

That was, as they say, a big if.

Maybe this was the day she would die.

There was a sliver of a chance that somehow, someday, she would return to the spot she appeared in, and there could still be a slender circlet lying in the dust, and she would reach down and take it, and even as she did so the dusty wasteland would disappear, and she would be back there.

Chances were someone else had already found it, that she would never return there, that even if she was there and it was there and she was still alive, there would be no chance to grab it because she'd be running from them.

In the meantime, she still wanted to take her revenge. Her bow inched cautiously up, and Susan loosed an arrow at the nearest creature. One day she might kill them all; they were certainly reducing, although ever so slowly. As she had come to expect, they began to feast on their dead comrade, and Susan hoped they would forget all about her in the process of feeding. She remained very still and prayed fervently.

This was definitely not what she'd pictured in life.

'They', to me, are pictured like a rotavirus with arms and legs. (Giant Microbes is the search term.) Someone I know has a Rabies giant microbe and it's adorable.

Fun fact, this was written over a month ago and I kinda forgot about it until now. Oopsie.

I hope you liked this. Please review!
