So... I got this idea while rereading Legacy. I couldn't find a good place to start, so it kind of starts in the middle of a scene, but I gave up on starting it well. The beginning is a little patchy but it gets better. Please forgive any grammar errors. My idea of editing is to write it out on paper first then type it up, so it's probably still a mess, but that's fine. This starts on 244, in chapter 12, of book 8, Legacy. A good amount of the beginning and some parts throughout are taken directly from the book, but I'm too lazy to figure out which parts. You will be able to tell.

Disclaimer: You are about to read my writing. Is it as good as Shannon Messenger's? No. It is not. That must mean that I am not her, therefore I do not own Keeper of the Lost Cities.

Ro muttered something about foolish boys, which made it impossible to translate Fitz's tone when he told Keefe "Yeah."

More silence followed, and Sophie went back to imaging which piece of furniture would be the best to fling through the window for her teleporting escape. Just as she had thought that everyone had left, she heard Fitz quietly ask Keefe and Ro to leave. Ro made some very audible growls, but allowed Keefe to pull her into a stream of light, presumably to take them home.

She felt the mattress shift beside her as Fitz sat beside her.

"Okay." His voice was still quiet, but his sudden closeness surprised her, even though she knew he was by her. "I don't want this to be a big fight. So will you please promise me something?"

Sophie looked into his eyes and was so glad to see him looking at her without all the hurt and anger she had seen the last time she had seen his face.

"Will you just remember that I'm sitting here with you, not getting mad or causing any of the drama that you were worried about. I know that I have a tendency to lash out, especially at those I am close to, but I'm working on that. What I need from you is your trust. When you avoid me like this, it hurts me. And then finding out that you have been hiding something big makes it worse. The thing that tops it off is finding out that you were willing to tell other people about it and not me. All of those things hurt me, more than you can imagine. I wish you trusted me enough to come immediately to me.

"I'm really sorry. Like really, really sorry."

she said, moving to give him a hug.

As he embraced her, he told her, "You don't need to apologize. Just don't ever do it again. Especially the avoiding me part. I've really missed you"

Her heart was pounding as she pulled back to look at his (beautiful teal) eyes as she told him, "I've really missed you too."

"Yeah?" He flashed one of his breathtaking smiles and she had to remind herself that this was actually happening.

This amazing, perfect guy she had had a crush on from the moment she first met him was really saying these things, and he was really looking at her like she was something amazing, even after hearing what the matchmakers had said.

And his fingers were really there, tracing her jaw, causing explosions of tingly fireworks wherever they went. His gaze shifted to her mouth and he leaned into her.

He leaned even closer and then they were kissing. And wow, this felt nothing like when she had kissed Dex. Fitz's lips were warm and made her so happy.

After a few seconds, he pulled back. "Wow." Sophie said. "That was amazing."

"It really was," Fitz said while smiling. "You're so amazing in every way. You know that, right?"

"I wish. I'm the freaky weird alicorn girl with too many abilities and unnatural brown eyes. I'm the strange girl who was raised by humans and knows nothing of Elvin traditions and was added to the mobility before I graduated Foxfire. I'm unmatchable for goodness sake. How you like me is beyond my understanding and even imagination, but I'm not going to fight it because of how much I like you and how amazing and perfect you are. I've just had to resign myself to the fact that I will ever fit in the model that a perfect Elvin Lady should fit in. She was near tears by the end of her rant, but was trying not to show it.

"Sophie." Fitz sounded a little worried for Sophie. "A lot of those things that you listed have a flip side. You have more abilities than anyone else alive, making you the most powerful elf alive. You have beautiful, unique eyes that I love. You can see the problems in our world more clearly than anyone else because you were raised outside of it. You were made a lady of the nobility younger than anyone before you and before you took the Elite Levels, which is also amazing. You are unmatchable and there is no visible positive to that, but together we can either find your parents, or if you don't feel up to searching for your parents, we can put up with the pushback. And I really think that fitting into the perfect elven model is boring. You are so unique, and I love that. Sophie Foster: you obviously cannot see yourself through my eyes, but if you could you would realize that you are the most amazing, talented, beautiful elf this world has ever seen."

Sophie had tears streaming down her cheeks by the end, but managed to ask, "Do you mean it?"

"I meant all of what I just said. You will need to be more specific."

"The part about not caring what the matchmakers think."

"I don't want you to have to face everything that comes with being a bad match, but I couldn't care less about myself."

"Thank you. You also mentioned loving me in your extensive rant about how amazing I am."

Fitz froze. "I didn't mean to tell you I love you. I mean… I do, but I don't want to pressure you into saying it back. I also wanted to plan a more romantic way to tell you."

"Fitz, you love me?" Sophie realized how silly her hopeful tone was as she said this, but she was really hoping that she had not misunderstood him.

"In case I was not clear enough the first few times, Sophie Foster; I love you."

Sophie smiled at him. "I'm glad, because I love you too. In fact, now that I-"

Fitz leaned in and quickly pecked her on the lips, then pulled back. "I'm sorry. I interrupted you. Continue on."

"You're welcome to kiss me anytime you want, as long as we're not around other people, namely Grady. Nyway, what I was trying to say is that now that I know that you don't mind me searching hard for my biological parents, I'm thinking I'll still search for them, because I really want to see your name at the top of my list, but if telling the world who they are will cause problems and upset the entire elvin world, I'll have to settle for us being a bad match. There is no one I would rather have by my side as I navigate this mess but you.

"Thank you, and just know that I'm here for you anytime you need me."

He tucked a strand of her hair behind her ear as she responded, "Thank you. You're the absolute best."

"That's my job as your boyfriend, assuming you want to stay together?"

"Forever and always."

"So we have it settled? Our relationship takes no lasting hits from this; we continue the search for your parents, just with me helping and not as urgently because I'm not going to become a rage monster on you anytime. If telling the world who your parents are will cause problems, we'll keep that information to ourselves. We will not ever avoid each other again because that just hurts both of us; and we have no more secrets."

Sophie laid down and put her head in his lap as she responded, "Sounds good to me except the beginning. I think our relationship got stronger through this, not only didn't fall apart."

"After figuring out all that, there is only one thing I don't understand; why didn't the Council put me on your team with you. They know how rare and valuable Cognates are. We are an extraordinarily powerful pair. Why didn't they team us up?"

"I don't know. Something about wanting me to use my other abilities. I made them promise to add you to the team if I need you."

Fitz started playing with Sophie's hair.

"If you need me?"

"I'm pretty sure I'll always need you. I'll give it a few weeks, but I know I'm going to end up adding you to the unstoppable Team Valiant."

"Don't feel obligated to add me. I want you to feel free, not like I'm a clingy boyfriend."

"If and probably when I add you, it will be as much if not more for me than for you."

"I'm glad that I'm so good for you."

Sophie smiled. "You are my cognate and my boyfriend. You help me stay focused and grounded when I feel like everything I need to do just keeps piling up."

"You do the same for me, especially whe I'm angry. And," he paused, then continued with, "I don't want you to feel like this," he motioned between them, "is another thing on your to-do list. I'm here for you when you need me, but don't feel like I need you to spend every waking moment of every day with me."

"Thank you. I'll try to check in every night, whether by imparter or telepathically, we'll see. If I don't reach out to you, feel free to reach out to me. Thank you so much for being so great."

Fitz glanced at the window. "I need to head home now. I love you."

Sophie stood up and he stood up after her. "I love you too."

Fitz held up his home crystal to the moonlight and glittered away.

Sophie flopped down on her bed and thought about their time together. Fitz really was so amazing and the best boyfriend ever. He seemed to think she was amazing too, and maybe someday after him telling her that often, she will start to believe it."

Edaline poked her head into Sophie's room and said, "I will not tell Grady that Fitz was here this late if you tell me everything that is going on between the two of you."

Sophie sighed.

This website needs more Fitzphie and just more KOTLC overall, but I'll be putting it on Wattpad too.
