Grow As We Go

Phillip Hamilton walked to the Burrs' house, his hands sweating like crazy.

He was going to tell Theodosia how he felt.

He couldn't let her go to California.

He wouldn't.

Sure, he and Theo had been dating since their first year of high school, four years ago, but it was different. She was gonna move across the country.

He needed to tell her how he felt about that.

He arrived at the home, his guitar case slamming against his back as he stopped abruptly.

What am I doing?

He started to back up.

No. You have to do this. She can't leave.

Phillip stepped forward, tapping lightly on the door.

"Hi, Phillip! What are you doing?" Theodosia opened the door and asked.

"May I come in?"

She nodded, stepping aside to let him in.

"Oh! You brought your guitar!" Theo exclaimed, clapping her hands together.

"Y-Yeah. That's actually why I came. I wanted to play you something." Phillip said, standing in the entryway.

"Do you want to go up to my room?" she asked, motioning with her head up the stairs.

"Y-Yeah." Phillip followed her up the stairs.

He sat down on her bed, taking his guitar out of it's case.

She sat down next to him, crossing her legs.

"You can start whenever you'd like." she said, sensing his nervousness.

He nodded, strumming a bit on the guitar.

"Okay." he took a deep breath and started plucking the strings. "You say there's so much that you don't know, you need to go and find yourself. You say you'd rather be alone, cause you think you won't find it tied to someone else." Phillip sang a bit shakily.

He continued. "Ooh, who said it's true? That the growing only happens on your own. They don't know me and you.

I don't think you have to leave, if the change is what you need. You can change right next to me. When you're high, I'll take the lows. You can ebb and I can flow. And we'll take it slow. And grow as we go. Grow as we go." Phillip paused, but kept strumming.

Theodosia nodded for him to continue singing.

"You won't be the only one. I am unfinished. I got so much left to learn. I don't know how this river runs. But I'd like the company through every twist and turn.

Ooh. Who said it's true? That the growing only happens on your own? They don't know me and you.

You don't ever have to leave, if the change is what you need. You can change right next to me. When you're high I'll take the lows. You can ebb and I can flow. And we'll take it slow and grow as we go. Grow as we go. Grow as we go. Grow as we go.

I don't who we'll become. I can't promise it's not written in the stars. But I believe that when it's done, we're gonna see that it was better, that we grew up together.

Tell me you don't want to leave. 'Cause if change is what you need, you can change right next to me.

When you're high I'll take the lows. You can ebb and I can flow. We'll take it slow. And grow as we go. Grow as we go. Grow as we go. Grow as we go." Phillip strummed the last note of the song. "Theo. Will you marry me?"

She nodded. "We'll grow, together."
