Mewtwo hadn't expected to return to the destroyed Rocket base after taking Ash and his Pokemon to safety. He had no desire to return to that place, nor could he think of any reason why he should.

But something had called him back, and as he explored the area, Mewtwo heard—or, rather, felt—a telepathic call coming from what was left of the building.

The catlike Pokemon followed the signal and traced it to its source underneath a pile of rubble. With telekinesis, it was little trouble to lift up the largest piece and toss it aside.

Underneath it was MechaMew2. The robotic Pokemon was heavily damaged from its self destruct, but it was still alive—for the moment.

"I'm glad you came," MechaMew2 said in a voice that was male and female at once. Electricity snaked and ravaged across its body, but if MechaMew2 noticed, it didn't care.

"Are you alright? Can you use Recover," Mewtwo finally asked.

MechaMew2 looked like it wanted to shake its head, but was unable. "I could, but... I doubt it would work. Even if it did, Team Rocket might find me again. I will not serve them any more."

A small smile crossed Mewtwo's face. "You remind me of myself. I, too, thought words like yours."

MechaMew2 synthesized a chuckle. "I know. That's why Giovanni made me, to replace you. He taught me every attack a Pokemon could learn... but he never taught me love like the boy's memories did. I must thank you for showing them to me."

Mewtwo smiled more fully, his eyes solemn as he watched the robotic Pokemon.

"It's no trouble. That boy taught me the same lesson. He stopped me from destroying this world."

Something in MechaMew2's chest exploded. It looked around at the sky, clouds, and trees around it, careful not to dwell on its own decaying body. "I'm glad he did. It's such a beautiful world, so full of life and wonder. Will you thank him for helping you, as well?"

Mewtwo nodded, though he was clearly troubled. "If our paths should cross a third time, I will. But...I must ask you something."

"What is it?"

"Do you regret using Self Destruct?"

MechaMew2 thought as something else on its body exploded. "...No. In a moment, I learned of life. I learned the value of life. And..."

Its eyes sparked and began to fade.

"I learned that helping others live can be more important than your own life."

MechaMew2's voice ground to a halt, and in seconds it stopped speaking and moving entirely.

Mewtwo quietly buried his counterpart. It deserved that much, for it had lived.
